Saloum Delta, Senegal | My Gambia | My Magazine
The significant part of the Saloum Delta, which covers 180,000 hectares, is a part of UNESCO World Heritage. It is a valuable bird breeding ground with extensive biodiversity, hosts a marine protected area, and a burial ground with many sacred artefacts.
The Saloum river embraces more than 200 islands, and the isles are covered in mangrove forests and swamps and dissected by saline channels and lagoons. The animal world of the delta is notable as it gives shelter to many mammals, four species of turtles and numerous species of birds, amongst which are Great White Pelicans and even greater flamingos.
Fajara Craft Market was established in the 90s, after Kotu Craft Market. It is one of the best craft markets in the country, whether because of the neatness, friendliness of vendors or quality...

Sine Saloum Delta, Senegal
The Sine Saloum Delta is a biodiversity-rich mangrove ecosystem on Senegal’s Atlantic coast. It sustains about 663,000 inhabitants and is home to 200 bird species, 100 species of molluscs, West Africa manatee and sea turtles.🐢
Despite these values, the Sine Saloum Delta has been heavily degraded and mangroves in the delta have been reduced by 30% since 1950.
Keep watching to find out how Wetlands International is working to reduce pressures on these valuable ecosystems while supporting local communities.

Today we visit the Saloum Delta National Park to see the maze of mangroves with their unique oyster undergrowth that sustains the local population. But finding a boat wasn't as simple as we thought. But we met a friendly fisherman named Baba Ka who got us a boat and became our impromptu guide for the day.

It is one of the best craft markets in the country, whether because of the neatness, friendliness of vendors or quality products. Every shop is well organized, and products are well arranged.

To reach the Saloum Delta in Senegal, I will have to find a boat to take me and my motorcycle across. From the small town of Djiffer, there are lots of boats (called "pirogue") and it's busy with people, animals, boats and all sort of goods. It takes a little time but eventually, I find a boatmen who is willing to bring me across (for a good price of course!)
