Do you know what mountains, hills, plateaus, and plains have in common? This video teaches kids all about landforms, particularly these four. Your kids will learn all about the different types and how they form. They will discover many interesting facts. For instance, they will learn about the Himalayas and how they make up the tallest mountain range in the world. Mount Everest is the tallest peak of the Himalayas. It's as tall as 48,000 people standing on each others' shoulders!
Hills are similar to mountains. They aren't as tall, but they form in similar ways. In fact, some mountains, including the Himalayas, started out as hills! Did you know there are two types of plateaus? All plateaus are flat and elevated, and they have steep hills and big cliffs. However, not all plateaus are the same. Dissected plateaus are created from tectonic shifts from the ground up. The Colorado Plateau is one of these. Volcanic plateaus, however, are formed from many small volcanic eruptions that build up over time. Most of the central part of the North Island of New Zealand. You will also learn about plains and how they are unique compared to the other three landforms.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about these four different landforms! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about landforms, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Mountains
Venture in to a natural environment and take a look around you. What landforms can you see?
A landform is a unique feature or shape of the Earth's surface.
Valleys, hills, canyons and plateaus are landforms.
Another type of landform - ones that really stand out are mountains!
A mountain is a very high area of land that rises above the land around it. Mountains are usually steeper and taller than hills. Scientists usually classify a mountain if it rises more than 300 meters or about 1000 feet above the surrounding land.
The highest part of a mountain is called the peak. Some mountains have peaks covered in snow for all or part of the year.
The peak of the tallest mountain on earth is MOUNT EVEREST. It has an elevation 8,849 m or about 29,000 feet.
Mountains can form where the Earth's tectonic plates meet and collide. The collision forces the land upward forming mountains. This process occurs very slowing over millions of years.
Mountains can also be caused by volcanic eruptions. During a volcanic eruption, magma erupts and flows onto the Earth’s surface as lava. Mountains can form when the lava cools into solid rock.
Check out our related videos to discover the different processes that have created some other landforms on Earth.
A mountain is a landform that rises above the surrounding land. A mountain is taller than a hill and usually has steep slopes and a sharp or rounded peak. There are three main types of mountains that differ in how they formed.
Volcanic mountains are formed when magma pushes up from beneath the Earth’s surface. When the magma reaches the surface, it creates a volcanic mountain. The mountains can get larger and taller when larva cools during volcanic eruptions. Mount Fuji in Japan is an example of a volcanic mountain.
Fold mountains are created when two or more of Earth’s tectonic plates are pressed together. The force pushes sedimentary rock upwards into a series of bends and folds. The tallest mountain range on the Earth, the Himalayas, are an example of fold mountains.
Block mountains are formed by the movement of the Earth’s crust along cracks called faults. The movement causes the Earth to pull apart and break into large chunks of rock. Some rocks are pushed upwards, forming mountains. The Sierra Nevada mountain range in the Western United States are block mountains.
Other planets in our solar system have mountains too. The tallest mountain, Olympus Mons, can be found on Mars. It is a volcanic mountain with a height of about 21 kilometers (13.6 miles). That’s about two and a half times taller than Earth’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest.
