2022 Lumberjack 100 Mountain Bike Race - Team Cancer Be Damned - The Tandem Journey
This was quite the experience, having a team come together for the Lumberjack 100 to help get our friend Jason battling pancreatic cancer across the finish line. It wasn't easy, it was a hard, it was just shy of a 10 hour effort in the woods. I have over 5 hours of the video here, unfortunately the SD card wouldn't hold 10 hours of video. I will put a COME Race with Us Version out with more in depth discussion on what happened out in the Manistee National Forest on that day.

2018 Lumberjack 100 - Lap 1
For my first Lumberjack 100, I felt like it went fantastic. I was fortunate enough to have a couple of guys, Eric & Aaron, to pace with. They've raced the LJ100 several times, and were targeting an under 8 hour finish like I was. I was able to hang on to Eric & Aaron's wheel for the first two laps, and was able to almost keep touch through the first half of the second lap (I briefly caught sight of them after the aid station at mile 17), but alas, their climbing legs were stronger than mine and I ended up about 7 minutes back from them. I can't say enough about their willingness to let me tag along and pace them. Thanks a ton, guys!
At the end of the race, I was obviously tired, but I wasn't destroyed like I had envisioned. It wasn't until the last 10 miles where I started hating life. I ...

The race was held on June 19th, 2021 in Wellston, Michigan (Manistee County) at the Big M, XC and Ski Area in the Manistee National Forrest. The 2021 race was SOLD OUT (within minutes). With the cancellation of the 2020 race due to the pandemic, all 2020 racers entries were deferred to the 2021 event. The race was capped at 430 racers. It was 3 laps of about a 32 mile course, with a couple mile initial paved rollout, totaling 100 miles with around 9000 feet of climbing. Course direction for 2021 was COUNTER-CLOCKWISE, which was a first for me as I did this race in 2018 CLOCKWISE as my first ever 100 mile MTB.
The weather was looking perfect a few days prior, but the night before a thunderstorm was suddenly in the forecast for the afternoon. Unfortunately the weatherman was right and midway through the first lap the rain came and made a mess of the course. This slowed everything down and left me at some point with little to no front brake. A couple minor crashes due to conditions and lots of mud also resulted in my lockout (Twinloc) being stuck in the middle position not allowing me to open it up for downhills or lock it out for the road sections. The rain and conditions remained poor for the later part of lap 1 and most of lap 2. Lap 3 brought some heat and humidity but at least the course began to dry a bit.
I was hoping to go sub 8 hours but the conditions all but limited that attempt. Also, I didn't seem to have the legs, mindset or the energy for the day and that resulted being in a dark mental spot midway through lap 2. Happy to push through the inner demons and finish in 8:36:23.

The Lumberjack 100 is a 100 mile race featuring 85% singletrack terrain and 15% two track fire roads. The race was held on June 15th, 2024 in Wellston, Michigan (Manistee County) at the BigM, XC and Ski Area in the Manistee National Forrest. The race consisted of 3 laps of about a 32 miles, with a couple mile initial paved rollout, totaling about a 100 miles with around 8,000 feet of climbing. Course direction for 2024 was clockwise, which was a third time for me in this direction and the same as in 2018 when it was my first ever 100 mile MTB.
My goal for my 5th attempt at Lumberjack 100 was to finally go sub 8 hours. I dedicated a lot of training time over the past year and thought not only was this possible, but I'd hope to be closer to 7:30 hours. I surpassed my goal and finished in 7:20 hours for 24th overall out of 457! This was with a crash at 1:17:05 where I misjudged the trail direction and ran into a tree. I couldn't decide if the trail went to the left or the right of the tree, so I chose neither and ran directly into the tree. Luckily my computer mount took the brunt of the crash and although a bit banged up, the body and bike were ok to continue. I did however have to put my Wahoo computer in my back pocket and go without metrics for the remaining 6 hours of the race, which was a bit of a disadvantage.
Very happy with my results and finally my fitness, hydration, nutrition and the weather came together for me. I've never "raced" this event and always paced it as a "time trial" monitoring my effort. I may have to change my tactics for 2025 if I have the fitness and see if I can sneak into the top 10! That would definitely be a stretch goal but possibly one worth pursuing.
**Of course my GoPro ran out of battery 5 minutes before the finish.**

* At 1:32:20 the rear camera turns itself on, it wouldn't turn on at the start.
* At 58:13 my teammate almost gets taken out by 2 charging deer, just barely escaping getting t-boned!
* This race was 3 weeks past a broken rib, concussion and injured hand/wrist. Felt decent on race day, but not 100%. Also, post crash, I switched to 170mm cranks from 175mm after years of too many pedal strikes. Due to the crank change, I had my seat a bit too high and that resulted in some very sore hamstrings mid race. Lastly, I switched to new shoes along with the cranks because I was getting bad hot spots on my toes. So lots of new stuff on race day! Caveats/excuses aside, I made some hydration and fueling changes that had me feeling the best yet at a 100 mile race. Was aiming for sub 8 hours, but came in just short at 8:16:43. It's all I had on the day and was happy to persevere in spite of the inuries and new gear.
The start of the race was unseasonably cold (40 degrees) which required a wind vest and arm warmers. Though by the end of lap 1 (2:40:53), it warmed up enough that I was able to ditch the extra gear. Lap 1 was pretty fast for the first couple hours and outside of my pace. Eventually I dropped back to conserve energy but that fast start may have cost me later. Lap 2 felt about right but fatigue started to set in. Even thought Lap 1 had an additional 13 minute (4 mile) roll in, my Lap 2 time was slower at 2:43:24. At this point I was now 4:17 minutes behind after 2 laps to go sub 8 hours. I would need to make those 4+ minutes up on Lap 3. It wasn't to be and Lap 3 I fell apart and it took me 2:52:27, for a total race time of 8:16:43. Which was a PR for me on the course as my time in 2021 was 8:36:24 (opposite direction) and 9:19:11 in 2018.
The Lumberjack 100 is a 100 mile race featuring 85% singletrack terrain and 15% two track fire roads. The race was held on June 18th, 2022 in Wellston, Michigan (Manistee County) at the BigM, XC and Ski Area in the Manistee National Forrest. The race consisted of 3 laps of about a 32 miles, with a couple mile initial paved rollout, totaling about a 100 miles with around 8,500 feet of climbing. Course direction for 2022 was clockwise, which was a second time for me in this direction and the same as in 2018 when it was my first ever 100 mile MTB.

I also didn't really come close to cramping until that last 10 miles, but a healthy intake of my Infinit Nutrition 'Go-Far' fluid when I felt that coming on held off full-on leg lock attacks completely. While I was struggling to get up out of seats for the next 24 hours, I never had any post-race cramping, either.
During the race, I relied on several different items:
1. Four bottles per lap: 2 water; 2 Infinit Nutrition 'GoFar'
2. One GU energy gel per lap: orange with caffeine;
3. One ERG bar each before laps 1 and 2;
4. 0ne peanut butter and jelly sandwich before lap 2;
5. One packet of SportLegs before each lap;
6. Several dill pickles both between laps and at the aid station 17 miles in.
Its hard to say what all was the most important, but at the end, I did not bonk due to undernourishment nor show any signs of under hydration.
As far as the video recording goes, I knew I wasn't going to be able to record the entire race - nor would anyone be interested in watching the full 8 hours - so I focused on just recording the first lap. Unfortunately, I think I had a bit of a flash card issue with my first GoPro Session, so there's a gap after about 15 minutes for about 15 minutes. Once I noticed it wasn't recording anymore, I had to start my second Session early which led to the battery dying about 5 miles before the end of the lap. You still get a sense for most of the course, except for the brutal climbing at the beginning and ending of each loop.
I look forward to another Lumberjack 100 in the future, though I'm not currently thinking it will be next year. That's a long ways away, though, so we'll see. ;)
