Ludgershall (/ˈlʌɡərʃɔːl/LUG-ər-shawl, with a hard g) is a town and civil parish16 miles (26km) north east of Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. It is on the A342 road between Devizes and Andover. The parish includes the Faberstown housing estate which is contiguous with Ludgershall, and the hamlet of Biddesden which is 1.5 miles (2.4km) to the east on the border with Hampshire.
History
There is evidence of settlement in the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age at Windmill Down on the western edge of the parish.
The entry in the Domesday Book (1086) reads as follows:
"Edward of Salisbury holds Ludgershall. Alfward held it before 1066; it paid tax for one hide (about 24 acres). Land for 3 ploughs. In Lordship 2 ploughs, 3 slaves; 8 Cottagers with 1 plough. Pasture 3 furlongs long and 1 furlong wide; woodland ½ league long and 2 furlongs wide." The value was 100 shillings.
Ludgershall was originally called "Litlegarsele", often rendered as "lytel", small and "garsheath", a grassy place thus a "small grazing area" or "little grass heath".
The county, in the 9th century written as Wiltunscir, later Wiltonshire, is named after the former county town of Wilton.
History
Wiltshire is notable for its pre-Romanarchaeology. The Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age people that occupied southern Britain built settlements on the hills and downland that cover Wiltshire. Stonehenge and Avebury are perhaps the most famous Neolithic sites in the UK.
The constituency was represented for the whole of its existence by Caroline Jackson. At the 1994 European election, there were boundary changes. Most of Wiltshire then became part of the new Wiltshire North and Bath constituency, which again elected Caroline Jackson.
The constituency consisted of the whole historic county of Wiltshire. (Although Wiltshire contained a number of boroughs each of which elected two Members in their own right, the boroughs were not excluded from the county constituency, and owning property within a borough could confer a vote at the county election.)
Medieval and Tudor period
In medieval times, the custom in Wiltshire as elsewhere was for Members called knights of the shire to be elected at the county court by the suitors to the court, which meant the small number of nobles and other landowners who were tenants in chief of the Crown. Such county elections were held on the same day as the election of the members for the boroughs. Thus we find it recorded that in the first year of the reign of Henry V, "at a full County Court held at Wilton, Twenty-Six persons chose the Knights for the County, and the same individuals elected Two Citizens respectively for New Sarum, Old Sarum, Wilton, Devizes, Malmesbury, Marlborough and Calne."

The FIVE WORST places to live in Wiltshire, UK
Welcome back to Turdtowns the channel that shines a light on some of the lesser known places in the UK. For good...But usually for bad reasons.
This week we headed off to Wiltshire county which is a pretty nice place. Lots of open country, rolling hills and .....SWINDON.
It was pretty nice here but we managed to make a case for five towns to be called TURDTOWNS. We were actually suprised how bad the top four were too.
We visited every town in the county. Including Chippenham, Salisbury and Calne and we were mostly greeted with pleasant towns. But we're not interested in them!
We are most likely covering some posh towns next because it's time to make fun of some Toffs!

You Need To See These Places In Wiltshire
You Need To See These Places In Wiltshire// Wiltshire is one pretty county I'm telling you! Here are some places that are well worth a visit and I'm showing you only a tiny fraction.
If you're a fan of Poldark (who isn't?), you need to visit Great Chalfield Manor which is a National Trust property. And when it comes to quintessential English villages/towns, you will instantly fall in love with Bradford on Avon and Castle Combe. Did you know that Castle Combe has the most romantic hotel too? If you want to book a very special stay, I think The Manor House is perfect. Makes you think of the film The Holiday. I can already picture Amanda and Graham.
Hope you like the video.x

Exploring the prehistoric sites of Wiltshire. History You Can Touch.
Long before the Bald Explorer was a thing, I made a documentary, the first for a proposed series of episodes, where I search for history you could immerse yourself within. The idea being that heritage is all around us and we can connect with it though touch.
The concept went on to become the Bald Explorer. Anyway, here I am in Wiltshire looking for the earliest of man's monuments on the landscape, the burial mounds, long and round barrows of prehistoric times.
At the time I was struggling with a very bad eye infection. Ultimately it led to the loss of my left eye.
My videos are funded 100% by people like you, please if you like what I do support the Bald Explorer here: http://baldexplorer.com/support/

We motorcycled to camp a distance of 45 miles and camped overnight in an ancient Woodland owned by my friend Steve.
I took both my candle lanterns with me, The Stonebridge automatic and the Swiss Army candle lantern to compare them.
Cooked a steak on the coals. Wonderful.
I hope you enjoy the video:)

Welcome to this weeks video in which we discuss what the Towns of Chippenham, Calne, Corsham and Cricklade all had in common. Now you may have already worked out its canal based, and maybe even gone a step further and worked out that it has a Tunnel Theme.

Cindy Copley, 66, from Ludgershall, Wiltshire, couldn't have predicted her neighbours' opposition when she put the fence around her front garden so her blind dog could go outside without the risk of him running into the road ... One said ... I'm furious.' ... .
The Environment Agency had issued 23 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, by 3am for an area stretching from Ludgershall in Wiltshire down to Dorset and across to Somerset... and Wiltshire.
A total of 24 flood warnings are in place, meaning flooding is expected, from Ludgershall in Wiltshire down to Dorset and across to Somerset... To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here to do so ... It said ... .
As a species, mankind has always been obsessed with things that go bump in the night ...The story goes something like this. In 1661, John Mompesson, who for ease's sake we’ll refer to as a magistrate here, was visiting Ludgershall in Wiltshire, England ... .
