Shirley MacLean Beaty (born April 24, 1934), known professionally as Shirley MacLaine, is an American film, television and theater actress, singer, dancer, activist and author. She has won an Academy Award, five Golden Globe Awards, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an Emmy Award and two BAFTA Awards.
In 2012, she received the 40th AFI Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute, and in 2013 received the Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts. She is known for her New Age beliefs and interest in spirituality and reincarnation. She has written a series of autobiographical works, many dealing with her spiritual beliefs as well as her Hollywood career.
Named after Shirley Temple (who was 6 years old at the time), Shirley MacLean Beaty was born in Richmond, Virginia. Her father, Ira Owens Beaty, was a professor of psychology, public school administrator, and real estate agent, and her mother, Kathlyn Corinne (née MacLean), was a drama teacher, originally from Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. MacLaine's younger brother is the actor, writer and director Warren Beatty; he changed the spelling of his surname when he became an actor. Their parents raised them as Baptists. Her uncle (her mother's brother-in-law) was A. A. MacLeod, a Communist member of the Ontario legislature in the 1940s. While MacLaine was still a child, Ira Beaty moved his family from Richmond to Norfolk, and then to Arlington and Waverly, eventually taking a position at Arlington's Thomas Jefferson Junior High School. MacLaine played baseball on an all-boys team, holding the record for most home runs which earned her the nickname "Powerhouse". During the 1950s, the family resided in the Dominion Hills section of Arlington.
"Losing My Mind" is a song written by Stephen Sondheim originally for the 1971 musical Follies for the character of a former showgirl, Sally Durant Plummer. The song became a popular Top ten hit for singer and actress Liza Minnelli in 1989 on the UK Singles chart and in Europe. "Losing My Mind" has been covered by many artists over the years.
"Losing My Mind" was first performed by Dorothy Collins in the role of "Sally Durant Plummer" in the original Broadway production of Follies. Other performers who have sung the song in later productions of Follies include Barbara Cook (1985), Julia McKenzie (1987), Donna McKechnie (1998), Judith Ivey (2001), Victoria Clark (2007), and Bernadette Peters (2011).
The song was written as a torch song for the character of Sally to sing in the "Loveland" portion of the musical. The song "expresses her preoccupation with Ben, her idealized lover...With infinite attention to detail, Sondheim leads Sally from sunrise to sleepless night, revealing that every second of her existence is defined by her longing...the number ...explores the extent to which she has lost herself in this make-believe world of undying desire." As originally staged, Sally comes onstage in a "clinging, beaded silver" dress, holding a microphone. The "cute" Sally from Phoenix "has become a languid torch singer." She repeats her lines, reflecting "the paralysis about which she sings...the phrase 'It's like I'm losing my mind' occurs no less than six times."
"Wake Up Call" is the second single by Maroon 5 from their second studio album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long. It had been rumored as the second single, and the band confirmed this on the May 22 episode of TRL. The band also said that they are excited to do the music video for the song. FMQB confirmed that the single would be released to radio on July 17. It leaked online shortly before May 1, 2007 as part of a four track sampler from It Won't Be Soon Before Long. They performed the song on 45th at Night, which included a special guest Eve. The remix was never officially recorded. Another remix was with Mary J. Blige making a special guest appearance for this song.
Before the release of "Wake Up Call", the band promoted by performing it a half-step lower. The song was also heard playing in the background in a club scene on the HBO hit, Entourage. The song was BBC Radio 1 playlisted for the playlist week beginning July 18, 2007. It was also featured as downloadable content for the music video game Rock Band. As of June 2014, the song has sold 1,821,000 copies in the US.
