A topographical guide to Shropshire published in 2005 describes Longford as a "charming hamlet on a rise in undulating country." The guide says Longford is 1.5 miles west of Market Drayton and 1 mile southeast of Moreton Say.
The village name is believed to come from a great road that existed in Roman times and was simply known as the Longford. By 1319 it was a Royal road between Bletchley and Hinstock to the south. The village, not on the road, is located just east of Bletchley.
Market Drayton is a small market town in north Shropshire, England, close to the Staffordshire border. It is on the River Tern, between Shrewsbury and Stoke-on-Trent, and was formerly known as "Drayton in Hales" (c. 1868) and earlier simply as "Drayton" (c. 1695).
Market Drayton is on the Shropshire Union Canal and on Regional Cycle Route 75. The A53 road by-passes the town. The counties of Staffordshire and Cheshire are both close by.
In 1245 King Henry III granted a charter for a weekly Wednesday market, giving the town its current name. The market is still held every Wednesday.
Governance
An electoral ward in the same name exists. This ward stretches to Shipton, Shropshire and has a population at the 2011 census of 3,988.
Industry
In 1965, sausage maker Palethorpe's built a new factory employing 400 people in the town. Purchased by Northern Foods in 1990, the company was merged with Bowyers of Trowbridge, Wiltshire and Pork Farms of Nottingham to form Pork Farms Bowyers. The sausage brand was sold in 2001 to Kerry Group, but the factory remains open to this day as the town's largest employer. It produces various meat based and chilled food products, under both the Pork Farms brand and for third parties, including Asda.
Longford (Irish:an Longfort) is the county town of County Longford in Ireland. It has a population of 9,601 according to the 2011 census. It is the biggest town in the county and about one third of the county's population lives there. Longford lies at the meeting of Ireland's N4 and N5 National Primary Route roads, which means that traffic travelling between Dublin and County Mayo or North County Roscommon passes through the town. The station in Longford on the Dublin-Sligo line is important for commuters.
History
The town is built on the banks of the River Camlin (from Irish:Camlinn, meaning "crooked pool"), which is a tributary of the River Shannon. The name Longford is an anglicisation of the Irish Longphort, from long (meaning "ship") and port (meaning "port" or "dock"). This name was applied to many Irish settlements of Viking origin and eventually came to mean fort or camp in the Irish language, and so Longfort the modern Irish spelling, is the name of this town, which was one of the only Gaelic Irish market towns to arise without first being founded by Vikings or Normans.
Longford and Hindley had both died by the time the film was made; Longford in August 2001 and Hindley in November 2002. Hindley's lover and accomplice Ian Brady, played by Andy Serkis, is still living.
Plot
The film begins during the late 1960s (during the first premiership of Harold Wilson) at the House of Lords, with Lord Longford, a regular prison visitor, presiding over a reception for a number of ex-convicts whom he had visited and corresponded with when they were incarcerated. He receives a letter from one of the most notorious criminals in Britain, the Moors Murderer Myra Hindley, who is several years into her life sentence for taking part in the murder of three children with her boyfriend, Ian Brady.

Market Drayton, Shropshire (1926)
This extract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. Britain seen in colour for the first time was heralded as a great technical advance for the cinema audience - now we can view a much improved image, but one which still stays true to the principles of the colour process.
The rather haphazard journey from Land's End to John O'Groats creates a series of moving picture postcards. Look out for shots containing the component colours - red and blue-green - such as when a little girl in a red coat and hat walks among peacocks in the grounds of a castle, and three girls with red curly hair pose by the sea at Torquay.
The car is a Vauxhall D-type - considered a sporty model at the time....

E/P51. The Shropshire union canal. Gnosall to Market Drayton Part 1
Hi Folks.
In this vlog we leave Gnosall after enjoying a lovely night in the George and the Dragon pub with the locals and begin the first part of a tiring 8 hour journey to Market Drayton. We made this journey in one long day due to the fact that bad weather was forecast for the rest of the week so I thought we might as well crack on whilst the weather was good. It was a long journey so i have edited it in to several vlogs. This being part 1.
Hope you enjoy

The car is a Vauxhall D-type - considered a sporty model at the time. A long-distance journey by car was a relatively new concept, with none of the amenities en route now taken for granted. The visit to a petrol station shows smoking on the forecourt: no health and safety issues back then! The travelogue ends with a series of recognisable London landmarks. Much remains the same - one major exception being the volume of traffic on the roads. (Jan Faull)

Is it a nice place to live in Longford Town,Ireland. Let's watch this video to find out.
The town is built at a fording point on the banks of the River Camlin (from Irish Camlinn, meaning 'crooked pool'), which is a tributary of the River Shannon. According to several sources, the name Longford is an Anglicization of the Irish Longphort, referring to a fortress or fortified house.[2][3]
The area came under the sway of the local clan which controlled the south and middle of the County of Longford (historically called Anghaile or Annaly) and hence, the town was known as Longfort Uí Fhearghail (fort/stronghold of O'Farrell).[4]
A Dominican priory was founded there in 1400. St. John's Church of Ireland (formerly known as Templemichael Parish Church) was built on the site of the priory in 1710.[5]

LONGFORD is the triple BAFTA and Golden Globe winning biopic of the controversial Lord and prisoner’s rights campaigner. Starring Jim Broadbent, Samantha Morton and Andy Serkis.
100% Rotten Tomatoes score and rated 7.7 on IMDB.
Directed by Oscar-winner Tom Hooper (The Kings Speech) and scripted by Oscar-nominee Peter Morgan (The Crown).
When Longford (Jim Broadbent) receives a letter from convicted child murderer Myra Hindley (Samantha Morton) requesting a prison visit, he accepts the invitation despite protests from wife Margaret (Lindsay Duncan).
He forms an unexpected friendship with Hindley, based on their mutual Catholic upbringing, and begins a decades-long fight to secure her parole.
But what Longford thinks he knows about Hindley is challenged during a visit to her partner-in-crime Ian Brady (Andy Serkis). His faith is further put to the test as popular outcry mounts against him for his involvement with the despised couple.
What the Press Said: “Jim Broadbent perfectly captured Lord Longford's ability to get it all a bit wrong” – Guardian
“Both Longford and The Queen are dramas that meticulously recreate a pivotal time in modern Britain… A chilling, strangely affecting portrait of their bizarre 30-year friendship” – New York Times.

(Jan Faull)

A walk through Market Drayton the day after Christmas - in the morning (Boxing day)
Market Drayton is a market town in north Shropshire, England, close to the Cheshire and Staffordshire
LONGFORD On DVD in UK from 30th July 2018. Order LONGFORD DVD from Amazon https://amzn.to/2mx5G6p.
