"California" is a song written by Joni Mitchell that first appeared on her 1971 album Blue. It was also released as the second single from the album, as a follow-up to "Carey."
Mitchell wrote "California" while living in France but longing for the creative climate she had experienced in California. In the song she expresses the depth of her longing for California by singing that if she was back in California she would even be willing to kiss a policeman, despite considering herself a member of the counterculture. Like "Carey", "California" takes the form of a travelogue and uses a stream of consciousness narrative technique.Pitchfork critic Jessica Hopper describes both songs as "how-Joni-got-her-groove-back ditties". The lyrics tell of her time in France, a trip she took to Spain and an excursion to a Greek island. At the end of each story in each location she expresses her desire to be back in California. The character that "Carey" was based on also appears in the second verse of "California". According to author Larry David Smith, Mitchell uses the descriptions in "California" as a strategy to demonstrate "principles associated with the Earth Mother manifesto."
The film was released in September 1993 in the United States, and received generally positive reviews from critics.
Plot
Brian Kessler (David Duchovny) is a graduate student in psychology as well as a journalist, who has written an article about serial killers, which draws interest from a publisher that offers him a book deal. After the book deal advance is spent, Brian realizes that he needs to start working on finishing his book. His girlfriend Carrie Laughlin (Michelle Forbes), a photographer, persuades him to move to California, and they decide to drive from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to California and visit infamous murder sites along the way. Short on funds, Brian posts a ride-share ad.
California is the third album by Gianna Nannini and was released in 1979. She releases a new album CALIFORNIA, a rock record that - with the single "America" – took her straight to the top of the charts in Germany and Northern Europe in 1980. The album went platinum in Italy and gold in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
The song “Alabama” is the official state song for the State of Alabama. It was first written as a poem by Julia Tutwiler, a distinguished educator and humanitarian. It was first sung to an Austrian air, but in 1931, the music written by Mrs. Edna Gockel Gussen, an organist and choirmaster from Birmingham, Alabama,
was adopted by the State Federation of Music Clubs and through their efforts, House Joint Resolution 74 was adopted March 9, 1931. Act no. 126, adopted the music and words as the state song of Alabama. The bill was introduced by the Hon. Tyler Goodwyn, Montgomery, and was signed into law by Governor B.M. Miller.
The inspiration for writing the poem Alabama came to Julia Tutwiler after she returned to her native state from Germany, where she had been studying new educational methods for girls and women. She recalled that in Germany patriotism was inspired by spirited songs. She thought that it would be helpful toward restoring the spirits of her own people to give them a new patriotic song, inspiring her to write "Alabama."
State Route 14 in Alabama, also known as SR-14, is a public highway maintained by the state of Alabama. SR-14 runs from west to east through the central portion of the state. The highway begins at the Mississippi state line at the terminus of Mississippi Highway 69 and connects the cities of Selma and Prattville before ending at State Route 147 on the western side of Auburn.
History
State Route 14 was one of the original routes in the Alabama's first statewide highway system in the 1920s. The original routing followed much of the same path as today, but was significantly shorter. The highway as built then started in Selma and ran east along its current route to Auburn. As was standard for highways of the era, SR-14 was unpaved for its full length. The first paved section was constructed in 1932 between Elmore and Wetumpka. Paving continued sporadically for the next 15 years, with the last gravel section on the route being paved in 1947.
In 1956–57, the state renumbered many highways, and as a result other state highways to the northwest of Selma were renumbered as SR-14, extending the highway to the Mississippi state line along its modern course. In the 1960s, when the first segment of Interstate 85 was constructed, bypassing Auburn and Opelika, SR-14 was extended from its eastern end at U.S. Highway 29 in Auburn along US-29 through Opelika to the northern end of that first Interstate Highway segment, at the current Exit 64. When U.S. Highway 280 was re-routed to meet Interstate 85 between Auburn and Opelika in 1998, SR-14 was truncated to a new eastern endpoint at US-280 in Opelika. In 2009, it was further truncated to its present terminus at the junction with State Route 147.

Lone Pine is the gateway to the eastern sierras with just a 3-hour drive from Los Angeles and a 4-hour drive from Las Vegas this underrated outdoor playground holds some of the most interesting and tallest features in the entire united states.
1 - Alabama Hills
The Alabama Hills California are some of the most underrated rock formations in the west. The fact that this land is the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and not a state or national park means that this area gets far fewer visitors than those labeled with that distinction.
2 - Mobius Arch
If you only have time for a short hike as you drive through Lone Pine the one mile Mobius Arch Loop Trail would be it. With wonderful views of the Sierra Mountains in the background and a playground of boulders and arches in the foreground. Alabama Hills California.
3 - Lathe Arch
Just a little further along the Mobius Arch Loop Trail is the much much smaller lathe arch. It’s relatively hidden, very easy to miss but be sure you scramble around just beyond Mobius Arch and find this unique arch.
4 - Cyclops Rock
Cyclops Rock is one of the more obscure and much harder to find arches in the park. You basically can’t see this arch unless you’re right next to it. Alabama Hills California.
5 - Eye of the Alabama Hills Arch
This perfectly positioned arch sits high on a hill patiently keeping an eye on the Alabama Hills and the Sierras beyond.
6 - Nightmare Rock
Only 1 or 2 miles up on Mt Whitney Portal Road to your right is Nightmare Rock. Only a quick stop is needed but it’s fun to imagine the faces and creatures in the formations of the rocks in the Alabama Hills.
7 - Stargazing and AstroPhotography
If you’re into Stargazing or AstroPhotography you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better place to do both.
8 - Mount Whitney
Mount Whitney (14,505 feet) is the highest point in the lower 48 states and the crown jewel of the Sierras. Mount Whitney Trail is a 22.5 mile extremely strenuous, heavily trafficked out and back trail that is best hiked from April to October.
9 - Lone Pine Lake
Don’t have time for Mount Whitney but want to get some Sierra hiking in? This 5.1-mile round trip hike takes you up the same trail as Mt Whitney and you don’t even need a permit!
10 - Manzanar
In 1942, the United States government ordered more than 110,000 men, women, and children to leave their homes and detained them in remote, military-style camps. Manzanar War Internment Camp was one of ten camps where Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were incarcerated during World War II.
11 - Whitney Fish Hatchery
Just north of Manzanar and in the town of Independence is the Whitney Fish Hatchery. Perhaps the most beautiful fish hatchery in the US if not the world.
12 - Museum of Western Film History
Enjoy films? Most likely you’ve seen many films that have been shot using the Alabama Hills as a backdrop. Films like Gladiator, Iron Man, Tremors, Django Unchained, Star Trek, A Star is Born, Maverick, The Lone Ranger, etc…
13 - Cottonwood Charcoal Kilns
The Cottonwood Charcoal Kilns in Inyo County stand as a reminder of the tremendous impact of the Gold Rush on forests and landscapes. The Cottonwood kilns were built to provide charcoal to the rich Cerro Gordo mine, 10 miles to the east, and across Owens Lake in Inyo County.
14 - Alabama Hills Cafe
Alabama Hills Cafe is my favorite place to eat in the area. They make their own bread and pastries have a good driving map of some rock formations on their wall and website. I highly recommend the cinnamon swirl french toast!

Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, CA was one of the epic stops that we made on our road trip through the U.S 395. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we came back multiple times ever since. This tumble of ancient giant granite boulders is like a trip into fantasy land. The timeless forces of wind and ice have sculpted the massive stone monoliths into a wonderland full of unique rock formations and natural arches. Besides its gorgeous landscape, Alabama Hills is also a famous location where numerous Western movies were filmed. And the best thing is, it is free to visit! So, we compiled a shortlist of some of the best things you can do here in Alabama Hills.
We love Alabama Hills, and we hope you do too. Therefore, please help us protect and keep this area clean and free for generations to come. This means take out ALL your trash, DO NOT deface any rocks, and leave things where they are.

A viewer invited me to the super quaint and beautiful little town of Lone Pine, CA to lead a burro in their annual Film Festival parade! Then I wandered around and met a bunch of interesting folks. I loved my time in this town, and will DEFINITELY be back!

A beautiful community located in the Owens Valley along US Hwy 395. It has a history that goes back to the 1860s. Nestled between the High Sierras and the White Mountains just north of the dry lake of Owens. It is home to approximately 2,000 residences and is the portal to Mount Whitney the tallest mountain in the lower 48 with an elevation of 14,505 ft. The famous Alabama Hills is located just west to the town and is known for movie sets for western films, tv shows, commercials and some modern films. The westerns start in 1920s and feature such stars as John Wayne, Tom Mix, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers to name a few. Long standing tv shows include the Lone Ranger.
Lone Pine California (200 Mile) Road Trip Ride Along and Buckle up and join me on an epic 200-mile adventure to Lone Pine, California. We’ll be crossing the vast, otherworldly Mojave Desert highways and dipping down to the lowest point in the US at Badwater, California, a staggering 282 feet below sea level. Feel the heat yet?
From there, I cruise along Highway 190, making a pit stop at the legendary 20 Mule Team Historic Site. Ever wonder how they hauled all that borax back in the day? We’ll find out together. Next, we’ll tackle some scenic mountain passes and take a quick detour to Keeler to check out the End Of The Line Monument – an old historic train depot that’s sure to give you a glimpse of yesteryears.
Then, it’s onward to the visitor center at US Highway 395 before we hit Lone Pine. Here, we’ll dive into the silver screen at the Hollywood Museum of Western Films. After soaking up some movie magic, we’ll pay our respects at the 1872 cemetery for earthquake victims – a somber but important stop.
Our journey doesn’t end there, though! We’ll visit the Manzanar Historic Site, reflecting on the history of the Japanese during World War II. Finally, we'll roll into Independence, California, to rest up for the night.
It’s a trip packed with history, stunning landscapes, and a touch of Hollywood glam – you won’t want to miss it. Let’s hit the road!

Lone Pine is a census-designated place (CDP) in Inyo County, California, United States, located 16 mi (26 km) south-southeast of Independence. The population was 2,035 at the 2010 census, up from 1,655 at the 2000 census. The town is located in the Owens Valley, near the Alabama Hills and Mount Whitney, between the eastern peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the west and the Inyo Mountains to the east. The local hospital, Southern Inyo Hospital, offers standby emergency services. The town is named after a solitary pine tree that once existed at the mouth of Lone Pine Canyon.[5] On March 26, 1872, the very large Lone Pine earthquake destroyed most of the town and killed 27 of its 250 to 300 residents.
