The Live Oak Brewing Company located in Austin, Texas, is a locally owned and operated brewery. The brewery produces four year-round beers as well as four seasonal (or special release) beers. Live Oak beers are only available on draft in the following Texas cities: Addison, Alpine, Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, Marathon, San Antonio and San Marcos, Temple, and Waco.
While Live Oak uses industry standard step mashing for most of their beers, they use a more difficult and rarely used old world style of mashing known as decoction mashing for a few of their beers, most notably the Live Oak Pilz and the Oaktoberfest.
Live Oak uses large dairy tanks as fermenting vessels instead of the more traditional cylindroconical fermenters.
Live oak or evergreen oak is a general term for a number of unrelated oaks in several different sections of the genus Quercus that share the characteristic of evergreen foliage.
The name live oak comes from the fact that evergreen oaks remain green and "live" throughout winter, when other oaks are dormant and leafless. The name is used mainly in North America, where evergreen oaks are widespread in warmer areas along the Atlantic coast from southeast Virginia and North Carolina to Florida, west along the Gulf Coast to Louisiana and Texas, and across the southwest to California and southwest Oregon.
Evergreen oak species are also common in parts of southern Europe and Asia, and are included in this list for the sake of completeness. These species, although not having "live" in their common names in their countries of origin, are colloquially called live oaks when cultivated in North America.
When the term live oak is used in a specific rather than general sense, it most commonly refers to the southern live oak (Quercus virginiana), the first species so named, and an icon of the Old South, but can often refer to other species regionally.
The Suwannee County Historical Museum is located in the depot. Exhibits include a telephone display, a 16th-century Timucaun Indian Village recreation and local history artifacts. The station is one block south of the Old Live Oak City Hall.
A brewery or brewing company is a business that makes and sells beer. The place at which beer is commercially made is either called a brewery or a beerhouse, where distinct sets of brewing equipment are called plant. The commercial brewing of beer has taken place since at least 2500 BC; in ancient Mesopotamia, brewers derived social sanction and divine protection from the goddess Ninkasi. Brewing was initially a cottage industry, with production taking place at home; by the ninth century monasteries and farms would produce beer on a larger scale, selling the excess; and by the eleventh and twelfth centuries larger, dedicated breweries with eight to ten workers were being built.
The diversity of size in breweries is matched by the diversity of processes, degrees of automation, and kinds of beer produced in breweries. A brewery is typically divided into distinct sections, with each section reserved for one part of the brewing process.
History
Beer may have been known in Neolithic Europe and was mainly brewed on a domestic scale.
In some form, it can be traced back almost 5000 years to Mesopotamian writings describing daily rations of beer and bread to workers. Before the rise of production breweries, the production of beer took place at home and was the domain of women, as baking and brewing were seen as "women's work".

Rebuilding a historic sailing yacht – Milling Live Oak timbers on Cross Sawmill’s massive homemade bandsaw, in the Deep South. Support; http://www.sampsonboat.co.uk/support-tally-ho Become a Patron; http://www.patreon.com/sampsonboatco
THIS episode, I am in southern Georgia , and I work with Steve Cross of Cross Sawmill to mill and grade lots of Southern Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana) for Tally Ho’s framing stock – one of the most historically important and best-regarded shipbuilding timbers in the world, which is no longer often milled commercially due to its extreme toughness.
Steve mills the timber on his amazing and enormous homemade bandsaw, which is constructed from 5 forklifts, 9 semi trailers, and “god knows what else”, according to Steve.
We also look at Live Oak trees in the area, including one that is claimed to be the largest Live Oak in the world… all the while keeping an eye out for Alligators!

19. Milling Live Oak in the Deep South - Rebuilding Tally Ho EP19
Live oak (Quercus virginiana), also called Virginia live oak and southern live oak, is evergreen-like and comes in a variety of forms, from shrubby or dwarfed to large and spreading, depending upon the site.

With sturdy, spiral trunks and deep roots that intertwine with neighboring trees, a live oak is a force to be reckoned with. Find out how architects and engineers are starting to think like a tree when designing safe and resilient structures.

There's a man who walks beside me It is who I used to be And I wonder if she sees him and confuses him with me And I wonder who she's pinin' for on nights I'm not around Could it be the man who did the things I'm living now? I was rougher than a timber shippin' out of Fond du Lac When I headed south at 17 ol' sheriff on my back I never held a lover in my arms or in my gaze So I found another victim every couple days But the night I fell in love with her I made my weakness known Through the fires and the farmers diggin' dusty fields alone The jealous innuendos of the lonely hearted men Let me know what kind of country I was sleeping in Well you couldn't stay a loner on the plains before the war My neighbors had been slightin' me I had to ask what for Rumors of my wickedness had reached our little town Soon she'd heard about the boys I used to hang around We'd robbed a Great Lakes freighter, killed a couple men or more And I told her her eyes flickered like the sharp steel of a sword All the things that she'd suspected I'd expected her to fear Was the truth that drew her to me when I landed here There's a man who walks beside me he is who I used to be And I wonder if she sees him and confuses him with me And I wonder who she's pinin' for on nights I'm not around Could it be the man who did the things I'm living down? Well I carved a cross from live oak and a box from shortleaf pine Buried her so deep she touched the water table line I picked up what I needed and I headed south again To myself I wondered would I find another friend There's a man who walks beside her, it is who I used to be
