In international law, a sovereign state is a nonphysical juridical entity that is represented by one centralized government that has sovereignty over a geographic area. International law defines sovereign states as having a permanent population, defined territory, one government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other sovereign states. It is also normally understood that a sovereign state is neither dependent on nor subjected to any other power or state.
The existence or disappearance of a state is a question of fact. While according to the declarative theory of statehood, a sovereign state can exist without being recognised by other sovereign states, unrecognised states will often find it hard to exercise full treaty-making powers and engage in diplomatic relations with other sovereign states.
Emergence of states
States came into existence as people "gradually transferred their allegiance from an individual sovereign (king, duke, prince) to an intangible but territorial political entity, of the state". States are but one of several political orders that emerged from feudal Europe (others being city states, leagues, and empires with universalist claims to authority.

In Greek mythologyEuropa (/jʊˈroʊpə, jə-/; Greek: ΕὐρώπηEurṓpē) was the mother of KingMinos of Crete, a woman with Phoenician origin of high lineage, and for whom the continentEurope was named. The story of her abduction by Zeus in the form of a white bull was a Cretan story; as Kerényi points out "most of the love-stories concerning Zeus originated from more ancient tales describing his marriages with goddesses. This can especially be said of the story of Europa".
Europa's earliest literary reference is in the Iliad, which is commonly dated to the 8th century B.C. Another early reference to her is in a fragment of the HesiodicCatalogue of Women, discovered at Oxyrhynchus. The earliest vase-painting securely identifiable as Europa, dates from mid-7th century B.C.
Etymology
The etymology of her Greek name (εὐρύςeurys "wide" or "broad" and ὤψops "eye(s)" or "face") suggests that Europa as a divine spirit represented the wide-faced cow Hathor, at least on some symbolic level. Metaphorically, at a later date her name could be construed as the intelligent or open-minded, analogous to glaukopis (γλαυκῶπις) attributed to Athena. However, Ernest Klein and Giovanni Semerano suggest a possible Semitic origin in Akkadian erebu "to go down, set" (in reference to the sun) which would parallel occident.
Europe is a continent that comprises the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia (extending from the Urals to the Iberian Peninsula), the Scandinavian Peninsula, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland and many smaller surrounding islands in the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.
Europe may also refer to:
Continental Europe, the mainland of Europe excluding the islands surrounding it
European Union, a European political supranational entity.
This was the third live multi-disk album in the Dead's past five releases, revealing how the group's reputation rested on their live performances. Indeed, the liner notes simply stated: "There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert." The album contained considerable new material in addition to versions of tracks found on previous studio albums.
Despite the band being out of the country, Europe '72 showcased the Dead's mixture of Americanbluegrass, folk, and country influences, and provided the culmination to the band's early 1970s sound. Archetypal American images abounded on "Jack Straw", while "Cumberland Blues" and "Tennessee Jed" were firmly rooted in their regional feeling. "Truckin'", which had recently become the band's first hit song, catalogued its own troubled-but-resilient pathway through American life. The Dead's start-stop-restart segue of "China Cat Sunflower" into "I Know You Rider" also linked their psychedelic past into a more traditional context.

Europe's New Islamic Microstate: Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order
Islam is the second-largest and fastest-growing religion in Europe.
And, if all goes according to plan, Albania will be establishing a new Vatican-style microstate in its capital, Tirana, tentatively called the Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order.
This microstate will be fully sovereign and control a 27-acre patch of land – just under a quarter of the size of Vatican City, currently the world’s smallest country.
Citizenship will be limited to members of the Bektashi Order’s clergy and individuals dealing with state administration.
Established in the 13th century, the Bektashi are an Islamic Sufi religious order or “tariqa” that eventually became the official order of the Janissaries, an elite corps in the standing army of the Ottoman Empire.

12. The Sovereign State: Hobbes' Leviathan
Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114)
This is an introduction to the political views of Thomas Hobbes, which are often deemed paradoxical. On the one hand, Hobbes is a stern defender of political absolutism. The Hobbesian doctrine of sovereignty dictates complete monopoly of power within a given territory and over all institutions of civilian or ecclesiastical authority. On the other hand, Hobbes insists on the fundamental equality of human beings. He maintains that the state is a contract between individuals, that the sovereign owes his authority to the will of those he governs and is obliged to protect the interests of the governed by assuring civil peace and security. These ideas have been interpreted by some as indicative of liberal opposition to absolutism.

The Political Theory of Thomas Hobbes: The Sovereign and the State
We all live in states today, and Thomas Hobbes has a good claim to have been the first person to articulate this concept in its modern sense. The intention of Hobbes’s civil science was to lower the temperature of politics, and his concept of ‘the state’ does this by standing as a fictitious entity, distinct from both the rulers who hold office and the population over whom rule is exercised. Ironically, once this concept was combined with the later concept of ‘the nation’, producing ‘the nation-state’, the result has often been to raise the temperature of politics to catastrophic levels.

Established in the 13th century, the Bektashi are an Islamic Sufi religious order or “tariqa” that eventually became the official order of the Janissaries, an elite corps in the standing army of the Ottoman Empire.
Because of this, Bektashi largely came to be associated with European Muslim converts and, following the so-called Auspicious Incident, when Sultan Mahmud II violently disbanded the Janissaries in 1826, the Order was itself banned.
Bektashism, however, staged a modest comeback during the Tanzimat, a reform period that began with the Gulhane Edict in 1839, but, following the Ottoman Empire’s dissolution and subsequent founding of the Turkish Republic, the Order was once again banned, when Mustafa Kemal Ataturk ordered the closing of all Sufi lodges or “tekkes” in 1925.
During the 1920s, Bektashi leadership moved their headquarters from Turkey to Albania and there were an estimated 52 lodges in the country by 1933.
Exactly how many followers of the Order there are nowadays is a bit hard to say, but, according to a 2023 census, Bektashi make up about 9% of Albania’s Muslim population and 5% of the total population.
