Thomas Hobbes
Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury (/hɒbz/; 5 April 1588 – 4 December 1679), in some older texts Thomas Hobbs of Malmsbury, was an English philosopher, best known today for his work on political philosophy. His 1651 book Leviathan established social contract theory, the foundation of most later Western political philosophy.
Though on rational grounds a champion of absolutism for the sovereign, Hobbes also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid.
He was one of the founders of modern political philosophy and political science. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy.

The State (TV series)
The State is a half-hour sketch-comedy television show, originally broadcast in the USA on MTV between December 17, 1993, and July 1, 1995. The show combined bizarre characters and scenarios to present sketches that won the favor of its target teenaged audience. The cast consisted of 11 twenty-something comedians who created, acted, wrote, directed and edited the show.
Several memorable characters were created for the show, and for a short time their catchphrases entered into the vernacular. Often, the cast would appear as themselves and address the audience to promote fake contests or to deliver mock public service announcements. Much like Monty Python, The State's sketches were sometimes linked to each other in some way: a punchline or image that ended one sketch often provided a lead-in to the next.
After years of legal issues related to the soundtrack to many of the episodes, the series was released on DVD on July 14, 2009. A State film featuring all of the original troupe members is in the works, but was delayed by the 2007–2008 screenwriters strike, and no release date for the project has been announced.

The State (album)
The State is the second album released by the Canadian rock band Nickelback. "Leader of Men" was the lead single from this album followed by "Old Enough", "Breathe" and "Worthy to Say". "Leader of Men" held a peak position of #130 on the Billboard 200. The album also held a peak position on Billboard Top Heatseekers Albums charts position #3 in 2000. The album went Platinum in Canada in April 2002 and went Platinum in 2008 in the United States.
Background
The State was recorded in 1998. In September 1998, The State was released independently with a blue album cover. The next year later in 1999, it was reissued on EMI Canada, with a re-formatted version of the original cover (the words "Nickelback" and "The State" were originally in yellow, in the same size near the right edge of the cover, on the EMI reissue, the word "Nickelback" was made into a bigger font and "The State" rendered in white, at the top of the cover). In 2000, it was reissed again on EMI Canada, this time with different artwork: a young boy in a jail cell on the re-releases. In 2000 The State reached the Billboard 200 peaking 130. To support The State, Nickelback toured with 3 Doors Down, Creed, Sevendust, and Stone Temple Pilots. In early of 2001 the band played its final dates with Everclear. In March 2001 Nickelback won its first Juno Award for Best New Group. In 1999, when Roadrunner signed Nickelback, they reissued The State, keeping the cover from the 2000 reissue. The State was released in Europe in April of 2001.

The Political Theory of Thomas Hobbes: The Sovereign and the State
We all live in states today, and Thomas Hobbes has a good claim to have been the first person to articulate this concept in its modern sense. The intention of Hobbes’s civil science was to lower the temperature of politics, and his concept of ‘the state’ does this by standing as a fictitious entity, distinct from both the rulers who hold office and the population over whom rule is exercised. Ironically, once this concept was combined with the later concept of ‘the nation’, producing ‘the nation-state’, the result has often been to raise the temperature of politics to catastrophic levels. Many people who aren't even interested in philosophy have heard of Thomas Hobbes, the 17th century English philosopher. He's often recognized for his thoughts on what humanity would look like in the state of nature. To quote the man himself, life in the state of nature would be "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." But as a philosopher, he's obviously going to provide a justification for this position. While there is a more theoretical explanation for this state of nature, he also asks us to reflect on how we behave around strangers in practice. On the one hand, Hobbes is a stern defender of political absolutism. The Hobbesian doctrine of sovereignty dictates complete monopoly of power within a given territory and over all institutions of civilian or ecclesiastical authority. Mr. Richey discusses the works of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, two of the most influential philosophers of government in the seventeenth century. After the Glorious Revolution, John Locke responded with his Two Treatises of Government, in which he argued that people enter into a social contract and form a government in order to preserve their natural rights (life, liberty, and property). In Locke's social contract, the people retain sovereignty and reserve the right to alter or abolish the social contract if the government fails to protect their natural rights. I spend the first part of the lecture providing a summary of Hobbes' Leviathan, followed by a summary of Locke, then I use a graphic organizer to compare and contrast Hobbes' and Locke's social contract philosophies, noting key similarities and differences between the two theorists.

This lecture is designed specifically for AP European History students studying Absolutism and Constitutionalism in preparation for their exam, but can also serve students in other disciplines, such as US History and Government, as well.

Mr. Richey discusses the works of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, two of the most influential philosophers of government in the seventeenth century. Hobbes and Locke were both influential in the development of social contract theory. In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes advances the idea of a permanent social contract in which people give up sovereignty to a governing authority in order to avoid the state of nature, which is a state of war with "every man against every man." After the Glorious Revolution, John Locke responded with his Two Treatises of Government, in which he argued that people enter into a social contract and form a government in order to preserve their natural rights (life, liberty, and property). In Locke's social contract, the people retain sovereignty and reserve the right to alter or abolish the social contract if the government fails to protect their natural rights. I spend the first part of the lecture providing a summary of Hobbes' Leviathan, followed by a summary of Locke, then I use a graphic organizer to compare and contrast Hobbes' and Locke's social contract philosophies, noting key similarities and differences between the two theorists.

This is an introduction to the political views of Thomas Hobbes, which are often deemed paradoxical. On the one hand, Hobbes is a stern defender of political absolutism. The Hobbesian doctrine of sovereignty dictates complete monopoly of power within a given territory and over all institutions of civilian or ecclesiastical authority. On the other hand, Hobbes insists on the fundamental equality of human beings. An introduction to Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan. Hobbes looms over all of us as the preeminent defender of the modern state and sovereign authority. Nuanced and original, he is probably the most influential figure in modern political philosophy who, and could be described as the father of both modern liberalism and modern conservatism.
Hobbes’ originality was his belief that political theory could be deduced from scientific principles about psychology, the senses, language, morality, knowledge, and power.
To understand politics, he argued, you had to understand people. Hobbes grounds Leviathan in a state of nature – a theoretical situation in which humans have no institutions, no government, no coercive power – a pre-societal condition.
Human existence in a state of nature is, according to Hobbes, pretty undesirable. In the most famous passage of Leviathan he says that in a state of nature there are ‘no arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.’
In a state of nature, we have a right to all things, but because we seek our own self-preservation, there are ‘laws of nature.’ Hobbes says that the first law of nature is ‘that every man seek peace, as far as he has hope of obtaining it; and when he cannot obtain it, that he may seek and use all helps and advantages of war.’
Because some ignore or misunderstand the laws of nature we require a sovereign power to keep us in awe; a leviathan.
Hobbes has been reinterpreted in the 20th century in game theory terms as a prisoner’s dilemma.

We all live in states today, and Thomas Hobbes has a good claim to have been the first person to articulate this concept in its modern sense. The intention of Hobbes’s civil science was to lower the temperature of politics, and his concept of ‘the state’ does this by standing as a fictitious entity, distinct from both the rulers who hold office and the population over whom rule is exercised. Ironically, once this concept was combined with the later concept of ‘the nation’, producing ‘the nation-state’, the result has often been to raise the temperature of politics to catastrophic levels.

Thomas Hobbes is one of the central Social Contract philosophers of the enlightenment. He believed that the social contract should individuals voluntarily surrendering their freedom in exchange for security under what he called, a Leviathan. To Hobbes, life without society would be nasty, brutish, and short, and so a strong authority was necessary to keep order.

Many people who aren't even interested in philosophy have heard of Thomas Hobbes, the 17th century English philosopher. He's often recognized for his thoughts on what humanity would look like in the state of nature. To quote the man himself, life in the state of nature would be "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."
But as a philosopher, he's obviously going to provide a justification for this position. While there is a more theoretical explanation for this state of nature, he also asks us to reflect on how we behave around strangers in practice.
We lock our doors at night, install security systems, and generally take precautions when going out. This is all in a society with laws and police, mind you, so you can only imagine the heightened anxiety and suspicion in the state of nature. Ultimately, his more practical defense relies upon our impossible total security when it comes to safety even in the modern world.

Mr. Richey discusses the works of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, two of the most influential philosophers of government in the seventeenth century. Hobbes and Locke were both influential in the development of social contract theory. In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes advances the idea of a permanent social contract in which people give up sovereignty to a governing authority in order to avoid the state of nature, which is a state of war with "every man against every man." After the Glorious Revolution, John Locke responded with his Two Treatises of Government, in which he argued that people enter into a social contract and form a government in order to preserve their natural rights (life, liberty, and property). In Locke's social contract, the people retain sovereignty and reserve the right to alter or abolish the social contract if the government fails to protect their natural rights. I spend the first part of the lecture providing a summary of Hobbes' Leviathan, followed by a summary of Locke, then I use a graphic organizer to compare and contrast Hobbes' and Locke's social contract philosophies, noting key similarities and differences between the two theorists.

This lecture is designed specifically for AP European History students studying Absolutism and Constitutionalism in preparation for their exam, but can also serve students in other disciplines, such as US History and Government, as well.

This is an introduction to the political views of Thomas Hobbes, which are often deemed paradoxical. On the one hand, Hobbes is a stern defender of political absolutism. The Hobbesian doctrine of sovereignty dictates complete monopoly of power within a given territory and over all institutions of civilian or ecclesiastical authority. On the other hand, Hobbes insists on the fundamental equality of human beings. He maintains that the state is a contract between individuals, that the sovereign owes his authority to the will of those he governs and is obliged to protect the interests of the governed by assuring civil peace and security. These ideas have been interpreted by some as indicative of liberal opposition to absolutism.

An introduction to Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan. Hobbes looms over all of us as the preeminent defender of the modern state and sovereign authority. Nuanced and original, he is probably the most influential figure in modern political philosophy who, and could be described as the father of both modern liberalism and modern conservatism.
Hobbes’ originality was his belief that political theory could be deduced from scientific principles about psychology, the senses, language, morality, knowledge, and power.
To understand politics, he argued, you had to understand people. Hobbes grounds Leviathan in a state of nature – a theoretical situation in which humans have no institutions, no government, no coercive power – a pre-societal condition.
Human existence in a state of nature is, according to Hobbes, pretty undesirable. In the most famous passage of Leviathan he says that in a state of nature there are ‘no arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.’
In a state of nature, we have a right to all things, but because we seek our own self-preservation, there are ‘laws of nature.’ Hobbes says that the first law of nature is ‘that every man seek peace, as far as he has hope of obtaining it; and when he cannot obtain it, that he may seek and use all helps and advantages of war.’
Because some ignore or misunderstand the laws of nature we require a sovereign power to keep us in awe; a leviathan.
Hobbes has been reinterpreted in the 20th century in game theory terms as a prisoner’s dilemma.

Thomas Hobbes
Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury (/hɒbz/; 5 April 1588 – 4 December 1679), in some older texts Thomas Hobbs of Malmsbury, was an English philosopher, best known today for his work on political philosophy. His 1651 book Leviathan established social contract theory, the foundation of most later Western political philosophy.
Though on rational grounds a champion of absolutism for the sovereign, Hobbes also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid.
He was one of the founders of modern political philosophy and political science. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met with China’s President Xi Jinping in Beijing, as part of efforts to shore up relations between the two countries.
But, while the China-US relationship is beginning to stabilise, but it is still being tested by "negative factors", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.
Blinken’s visit to China comes days after a law that would force Chinese-owned TikTok to sell the video app or be banned in the US was passed.
It is also expected that US officials will raise China’s support for Russia during Blinken's visit, with reports stating that Washington is prepared to act against Chinese companies that have been helping retool and resupply Russia's defence industry, aiding them in their invasion of Ukraine.
