According to the United Nations' most recent study on urban populations, urban areas are anticipated to house 60% of people globally by 2030, with one in every three living in cities with at least half a million inhabitants. In reality, one out of every five individuals on the planet lives in a metropolis with a population of more than one million people. In this video, we will be discussing the 7 largest cities in the world by population.

First is Tokyo. According to recent estimates, the city of Tokyo's 23 wards had 9,262,046 people in 2016. The old city of Tokyo, which was officially dissolved in 1943 when it amalgamated with the prefecture, was divided into 23 wards. However, Tokyo stretches far beyond its original city limits and is one of the world's largest urban sprawl, making it difficult to estimate how many people reside there.
According to a 2016 population estimate, Tokyo presently has a population of 13.5 million or 9,262,046 across all 23 wards. The city metropolis has a surface area of roughly 844.66 square miles. However, the city increases to a total area of 5,240 square miles. Therefore, Tokyo's population density is 16,121.8 residents per square mile.
The second most populous city in the world is Delhi. Delhi, also known as India's National Capital Territory (NCT), is a huge metropolitan area. The population of Delhi was predicted to be 18.6 million in 2016. However, Delhi's population quickly increased, with almost 16.7 million in 2011. It is one of the world's fastest-growing cities, with over 18 million people in 2021, up from 400,000 in 1901. Its population expanded by 215,000 due to natural growth and 285,000 due to migration in 2001 alone. After Tokyo and Mumbai, Delhi was anticipated to be the third-largest conurbation by 2020, but it's now the second.
The third most populous city in the world is Shanghai. Shanghai is China's most populous city. It is a major financial centre and a worldwide city, located at the mouth of the Yangtze River in East China's Yangtze River Delta. Shanghai, often known as the Pearl of the Orient and the Paris of the East, had a population of slightly over 24 million people in 2016, surpassing the total population of Taiwan. Shanghai's population was expected to be 24.15 million in 2016, down 0.4 percent from the previous year. The city is the most populous in China, with a population density of 2,059 people per square kilometre.
The fourth most populous city in the world is Sao Paulo. Although the name Sao Paulo refers to both a state and a city in Brazil, we will focus solely on the city. It had a population of 11,967,825 people in 2016. Sao Paulo is Brazil's largest metropolis and the largest city in the Americas and the southern hemisphere. It's also one of the world's top ten largest metropolitan areas. Sao Paulo is a worldwide metropolis with strong ties to the arts, entertainment, finance, and commerce, and it holds the world's largest gay pride parade. The municipality, often known as Sampa or Cidade da Garoa (city of drizzle), had 11.31 million people in 2011. Sao Paulo was predicted to have around 12 million people in 2018. In 2021, the city of Sao Paulo had a population of over 22 million.
