Christ's Hospital educates a proportion of its students free, and most at a reduced rate. This stems from its founding charter as a charitable school. School fees are paid on a means-tested basis, with subsidies paid by the school, so that pupils from all walks of life are able to have an independent school education that would otherwise be beyond the means of their parents.
In 2006 19% of children accepting places were assessed as being in "very high" need, 64% in "medium to high" need and 17% in "low" need.
The school was established in 1974, taking over the pupils and many of the staff of the ancient Lincoln Grammar School, Christ's Hospital Girls' High School (established in 1893), and two 20th-century secondary modern schools, St Giles's and Myle Cross.
History
Hospital schools date from the 13th century as boys' schools for parents who could not afford to pay school fees. They were also known as charity schools. The former Lincoln School may have dated from the 11th century, but it was re-founded as a charity school in the 17th century.
The endowment for Christ's Hospital Girl's school was derived from the former Bluecoat School on Christ's Hospital Terrace, Lincoln which was closed in 1883. This school was originally established in 1614 in St. Mary's Guildhall, Lincoln before it was moved to Christ Hospital Terrace in 1623.
A hospital school is a school operated in a hospital, generally a children's hospital which provides instruction to all primary and secondary grade levels. These schools help children regain academic progress during periods of hospitalization or rehabilitation. The schools are most often accredited and run by the local public school system, funded by the state, and are based on the same curriculum and testing mandated by the state as is practical for the students. Enrollments are low when compared to traditional schools and teachers must provide instruction for many grade levels.
The LeHo Project
The LeHo Project (Learning at Home and in the Hospital) is an international 3-year project funded by the European Union, and managed by the Politecnico di Milano aiming to research, develop and disseminate effective pedagogical practices and appropriate use of ICT within the Hospital School Sector.
The aims of this project are to:
Outline key educational factors and good practices needed by students who are ill.
Explore and design ICT-based solutions which will enable children in hospital, receiving home therapy, or who attend school part-time due to illness, to access education.
Demonstrate how technology can impact on the methodology and pedagogy in Home and Hospital Education (HHE).

Inside Christ's Hospital, Newgate: A Revealing Journey
Christ’s Hospital is one of the famous Royal Hospitals of London. King Edward VI instructed the Lord Mayor, Sir Richard Dobbs, to appoint a committee of leading citizens to consider remedies and relief for the City’s homeless and poor. CH, established in the monastery of the Grey Friars in Newgate Street, embraced the task of educating and nourishing the destitute children of the City and took children of all social backgrounds and ages.
In November 1552, CH opened its doors to 380 pupils and, within a year, the number had increased to over 500. In 1897, the foundation stone was laid just outside Horsham in Sussex for a new school outside of London, and in 1902 the first boys started to arrive and the girls from Newgate were moved ...
