Ligurian Sea: The Cetacean Sanctuary in Italy | Italia Slow Tour
There are ideal conditions for the survival of whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea region between Liguria, Tuscany, and Sardinia, where the sea level exceeds 2000 metres and the water cycle is swift enough! They can be recognised, but only with caution and respect.

Ligurian Sea, Liguria, Italy, Europe
The Ligurian Sea is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea, between the Italian Riviera (Liguria and Tuscany) and the island of Corsica. The sea is probably named after the ancient Ligures people. The sea borders Italy as far as its border with France, and the French island of Corsica. In the east the sea borders the Tyrrhenian Sea, while in the west it borders the Mediterranean Sea proper. Genoa is the most prominent city in the area. The northwest coast is noted for its scenic beauty and favourable climate. The Gulf of Genoa is its northernmost part. The sea receives the Arno River from the east and many other rivers that originate in the Apennines. The ports of Genoa, La Spezia, and Livorno are on its rocky coast. It reaches a maximum depth of more than 9,300 feet (2,850 m) northwest of Corsic...

It reaches a maximum depth of more than 9,300 feet (2,850 m) northwest of Corsica. In order to provide protection for the numerous cetacean (whales and dolphins; porpoises are not found in this part of the Mediterranean Sea) species in the Ligurian Sea the bordering countries established the sea as a SPAMI in 1999. The International Ligurian Sea Cetacean Sanctuary now covers 84,000 km² covering territorial waters as well as high sea.

• The city’s Palazzi dei Rolli, a series of grand palaces built during the Renaissance to host important visitors, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Via Garibaldi, a street lined with these palaces, is a must-see.
2. Architectural Beauty
• Genoa is known for its narrow alleyways, or caruggi, which make up its historic center—the largest medieval old town in Europe.
• The Cattedrale di San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence Cathedral) features a mix of Gothic and Romanesque architecture and is one of Genoa’s most famous landmarks.
• Piazza De Ferrari, the city’s main square, showcases a grand fountain and impressive buildings, such as the Opera House and the Palazzo della Borsa.
3. Port of Genoa
• Genoa’s port is one of Italy’s busiest and an essential Mediterranean gateway. The Porto Antico (Old Port) has been redeveloped into a vibrant area with shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the famous Aquarium of Genoa, one of Europe’s largest.
4. Museums and Art

Genoa (or Genova in Italian) is a beautiful and historic port city in northwest Italy, on the Ligurian Sea. It’s the capital of the Liguria region and is known for its maritime history, stunning architecture, and being the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. Here’s a bit more about what makes Genoa special:
1. Historical Significance
• Genoa was a powerful maritime republic in the Middle Ages, along with Venice, Pisa, and Amalfi. Its wealth and influence grew through trade and naval power, competing with Venice for control over trade routes in the Mediterranean.
