A lateen (from French latine, meaning "Latin") or latin-rig is a triangular sail set on a long yard mounted at an angle on the mast, and running in a fore-and-aft direction.
Dating back to Roman navigation, the lateen became the favourite sail of the Age of Discovery, mainly because it allows a boat to tack "against the wind". It is common in the Mediterranean, the upper Nile River, and the northwestern parts of the Indian Ocean, where it is the standard rig for feluccas and dhows. The lateen is used today in a slightly different form on small recreational boats like the highly popular Sailfish and Sunfish, but is still used as a working rig by coastal fishermen in the Mediterranean.
History
Introduction into Mediterranean Sea
The earliest fore-and-aft rig was the spritsail, appearing in the 2nd century BC in the Aegean Sea on small Greek craft. One theory is that the lateen sail originated during the early Roman empire in the Mediterranean Sea. It evolved out of the dominant square rig by setting the sails more fore-and-aft – along the line of the keel – rather than athwartship, while tailoring the luff and leech. The theory of Roman origin for lateen was began with Lynn White and followed by Lionel Casson but was contested by John M. Hobson. John M. Hobson offered many evidences to prove that the theory of Roman origin is wrong
I'll will quickly show you how a lateen sail works by rigging and sailing a traditional Tagus wooden boat that we care for at the club. These smaller boats are called "Catraios".
This boat was in a warehouse for decades and it was in a really bad state. Last year it was restored by a local lad who unfortunately passed away.
He never finished the work nor even tried the boat.😔
Nowadays it is at the sailing club's care and we will try to keep it in sailing condition.
I have rigged a small lateen sail and finished all the cleats, mast step and other parts so that we can try her out .
It was not perfect but it was fun as always!😉

HEBE - Dipping Lateen
Can you make a lateen sail that will tack? Yes, you can. This tacking (dipping), reefable lateen sail was designed by Jonathan Winter to replace a traditional spritsail on Whitehall skiff 'Hebe'. It proved surprisingly efficient, both upwind and downwind. Here it is in action on the Caledonian canal in Scotland, in May 2014.

Lateen Rig sailboat details and interview | Lateen Sail | Latin-rig | Vela Latina
Many asked for more info on the Lateen rig sailboat from my last video so here it is!
I went out with Bruno aboard Princesa do Tejo,a lateen rigged traditional fishing boat, while sailing Bruno told me a bit more about Princesa's history and specs as well as explained some sail controls.
Not much wind but we managed to explore a bit of the estuary which goes right into town, where we had a nice expresso coffee!
On the way back, some photos of Lisbon in the old days, and some food and beer!
I had the pleasure of taking Princesa all the way home...
Great day!
