Zhangye is in the center of the Hexi Corridor. The area was the frontier for much of China's history, forming a natural passage to the Central Asian portion of the empire. In fact, the name Zhangye (lit. "to extend the arm") is an abbreviation of 张国臂掖,以通西域 (lit. To extend the arm of the country, through to the Western Realm). During the Western Han dynasty, Chinese armies were often engaged against the Xiongnu in this area. It was also an important section of the Silk Road. The Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan is said to have been born in the Dafo Temple, which is also the site of the longest reclining wooden Buddha in China.
The city was formerly known as Ganzhou (甘州), a name retained both in the municipal region seat Ganzhou District and the Gan of the province of Gansu. In The Travels of Marco Polo, Marco Polo describes spending a year in a city called Campichu, which has been identified with Ganzhou (Zhangye).

How Nature created a Zhangye Danxia
Zhangye Danxia is one of the most fascinating spectacles of mother nature, with vivid colors stretching over hundreds of square kilometers of mountains and hills in northern China. In this video we will look at the #Geology and geography which gave us #Zhangye #Danxia. Here's a rundown of everything we did in Zhangye:
Getting the train from Xining to Zhangye - 0:57
The views from the train onto the Chinese countryside was pretty spectacular.
Hiring a private car for the day - 1:17
We met some other travellers in our hostel and decided to share a private car and driver to take us around for the day. This was also good as we had our big backpacks with us!
Exploring Danxia National GeoPark - 1:33
Looking around the more peaceful side of the park, which looks a lot like the national parks of Australia or the US. There are buses that you can get all around the park.
Visiting the Rainbow Mountains at Sunset - 3:07
Exploring the many boardwalks of the Danxia Landform GeoPark. The views are pretty spectacular, but you need to go and find the quieter spots.
Final Thoughts on the Rainbow Mountains - 4:19
Why I thought this was the best day we had in China: Expect the unexpected!

Danxia National Geopark is located in the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains and about 32 km from Zhangye City in Gansu Province. It covers an area of 322 square kilometers (124 sq mi).
Zhangye Danxia National Geopark, or China's Rainbow Mountains for short, is a geological wonder of the world. The Rainbow Mountains are composed of chalk sandstone and silty silt.
The natural landscape is filled with shades of blue, emerald, green, orange, red and yellow. There are seven complete color differentiations. This feature has received nicknames similar to "Zhangye" and "China's Rainbow Mountains".
Where did the rainbow come from? The answer is not as magical as one might hope: different layers of sandstone that are millions of years old. With erosion, wind and weather, colorful layers formed. Iron and other trace elements were deposited in this mixture, providing it with a key ingredient for color formation.
This geological park offers several walking areas and scenic views to enjoy the color to the fullest. There are five lookout stops that can be reached by the tour bus.
In August 2010, China Danxia was inscribed on the World Heritage List. On April 23, 2012, the site became a Quasi-National Geopark.
Known for its colorful rock formations, it has been recognized by the Chinese media as one of China's most beautiful landforms.

China's Rainbow Mountains can be found in the Danxia Landform Geopark near the city of Zhangye. We took a day trip by train and spent the day exploring the different mountains and rock formations during the day and at sunset.

Zhangye Danxia is one of the most fascinating spectacles of mother nature, with vivid colors stretching over hundreds of square kilometers of mountains and hills in northern China. In this video we will look at the #Geology and geography which gave us #Zhangye #Danxia. Hundreds of millions of years of sedimentation and under just the right volcanic conditions have create these colorful layers. For more videos like this one, be sure to subscribe and leave a like. Gansu from South to North (part 6) from Lanzhou we head north to Zhangye, a wonderful old silk road town in the middle of the Hexi corridor.
Marco Polo lived here for a year in a town nestled between the mountains of Qinghai and Inner Mongolia. The Big buddha temple still stands a thousand years after construction and the surrounding countryside is not to be missed. I visit Pingshanhu in this video - Chinas Grand Canyon.
Hope you enjoy the video - the next one will be further northwest into Gansu in the famous fort of Jiayuguan.
Prepare to be mesmerized by the jaw-dropping beauty of Zhangye National Geopark, also known as China's Rainbow Mountains! Located in the Gansu Province, this natural wonder is famous for its surreal, multi-colored rock formations that look like a painter's palette come to life. Discover the history, geology, and magic of this UNESCO World Heritage site in our breathtaking visual journey. 🌄

Try to explain I know its complicated But I still have this feeling More serious than butterflies My inside's so sore Finding it hard to let go Cause I'm still - I'm still in love I'm in Love Here we are again I know I shouldn't give in But I crave the feeling Of you giving it back to me Makes me want you more Know that this is wrong But im still - I'm still in love
