Late 1922: The club was formed by John F. Leeming and a group of friends who had started to build a glider in Leeming's garage at his home in Bowdon near AltrinchamCheshire. It was named "Aero Club" because at the time many racing pigeon clubs called themselves "<placename> Flying Club".
Early 1924: The LPW Glider was completed and was taken to Alexandra Park Aerodrome. The club flew the glider many times at Alexandra Park, launching it by towing behind a car.
August 1924: Alexandra Park Aerodrome closed. The club moved to Avro's Woodford Aerodrome.
A flying club or aero club is a not-for-profit, member-run organization that provides its members with affordable access to aircraft.
Many clubs also provide flight training, flight planning facilities, pilot supplies and associated services, as well as organizing social functions, fly-ins and fly-outs to other airports and so forth. While flying clubs are home to those who pursue flying as a hobby, many commercial pilots also get their start at flying clubs.
Most flying clubs own and rent small general aviation aircraft. In North America and Europe the most popular such aircraft are the Cessna 152, the Cessna 172, and the Piper Cherokee. However some clubs also exist to provide access to more specialized aircraft, such as vintage planes, aerobatic planes, helicopters and gliders.
In Canada, however, the clubs can be fairly large non-profit operations, some dating back to the 1920s and operating at large airports as well as small. Canadian flying clubs often serve as fixed-base operators at their airports as well as flight schools and aircraft renters.
Lancashire (/ˈlæŋkəʃər/, /ˈlæŋkəʃɪər/ or, locally, [ˈɫaŋkɪʃə(ɻ)]; archaically the County Palatine of Lancaster; abbreviated Lancs.) is a county in north west England. Although Lancaster is still the county town, the county's administrative centre is Preston. The county has a population of 1,449,300 and an area of 1,189 square miles (3,080km2). People from the county are known as Lancastrians.
The history of Lancashire begins with its founding in the 12th century. In the Domesday Book of 1086, some of its lands were treated as part of Yorkshire. The land that lay between the Ribble and Mersey, Inter Ripam et Mersam was included in the returns for Cheshire. When its boundaries were established, it bordered Cumberland, Westmorland, Yorkshire and Cheshire.
The ancient county of Lancashire covered a much larger area than the modern county of Lancashire. The county town of Lancaster was in the north of the county. The county boundary was further north beyond Carnforth and followed approximately the same boundary as the modern county. The old county of Lancashire also included land on the opposite side of Morecambe Bay. Barrow and Furness and the area between Lake Windermere and the River Duddon, and the area west of the River Winster were considered parts of Lancashire. Most of the modern district of Ribble Valley was at this time part of Yorkshire. In the south the county extended to the River Mersey and Liverpool and followed the Mersey and the River Tame to Ashton-under-Lyne. Most of the southern area of the ancient county now forms the modern metropolitan counties of Merseyside and Greater Manchester.

Thousands of pilots worldwide have found an outlet for their passion for flight through a local flying club. So as many of you have suggested, I’ve been looking into flying clubs as an option for me to get back in the cockpit. Although many of the flying clubs close to me are really flight schools with membership rates. I had initially stayed away from this option because of some of the uncontrollable things you have to deal with when it comes to flight schools. You never know when an aircraft is available or if the aircraft suddenly is in maintenance or someone else already booked it. Also flight schools generally have more expensive prices on the aircraft rental fees.
Now if I were to find a more exclusive private flying club with a piper cherokee or similar aircraft, where all of the flying is members only. That would be great. Anyway, today I am going to a local flight school at PDK airport called Skybound. I will be asking some questions about their airplane fleet and rates.
Upon getting to the flying club, first I let them know that I’m looking to fly a specific airplane, the piper cherokee 140. This happens to be the most affordable aircraft in their fleet, renting for $100 per hour as a membership rate. Walk in rate is about 20% more. And speaking of the fleet, below are the aircrafts available:
1969 Cessna 172 - rents for $155/hr. Cruise speed is 120 knots
1969 Piper cherokee - rents for $100/hr. cruise speed is 105 knots
1980 Piper archer ii - rents for $155/hr. cruise speed is 120 knots
1969 Piper arrow - rents for $165/hr. cruise speed is 135 knots
1997 Piper lance - rents for $205/hr. cruise speed 150 knots
2004 Cirrus sr22 - rents for $300/hr. cruise speed 175 knots
1976 Piper seneca - rents for $330/hr. cruise speed 177 knots
1980 super decathlon - rents for $180/hr. cruise speed 130 knots
All of the aircraft seem to be well kept condition with nice interior space. Sadly though, the piper cherokee on their fleet is the only one available and because it’s the cheapest to rent, the airplane gets booked quite a lot. And as you may have already guessed, the Piper Senaca and the Decathlon gets booked the least because the seneca is a multi engine that requires a multiengine rating to fly and the Decathlon is a taildragger which will require a tailwheel endorsement to fly.

Thousands of pilots worldwide have found an outlet for their passion for flight through a local flying club. With over 600 organizations in the United States, there are many opportunities to become a member at an already-existing flying club. While many pilots seek a flying club for the financial benefits, it is the community and sense of camaraderie that make their membership special. Studies have shown that pilots that become members in flying clubs remain much more active in aviation as a result of the peer support found in the club.
Most clubs even allow members to take primary flight training in the club aircraft while almost all flying clubs allow and even promote advanced and recurrent training. You may not even have to look outside of the club membership to find a certified flight instructor.
If you are interested in starting your own club, there are some things you should consider including what is the mission of the club; how large you would like it to be; what type of aircraft you would like feature; and how you will legally structure the club. Most clubs will either be a corporation; an unincorporated association; or a limited liability company. A detailed description of each type of organization can be found in the AOPA Guide to Flying Clubs; available on our website: AOPA.org. While there are advantages and benefits to each, the laws in your state will determine which type of organization will best suit your club. We recommend that you seek the assistance of qualified legal and accounting professionals to advise you through this phase of setting up your flying club.

Jumping into the world of frequent flyer programmes is complex and full of so many variables - combined with less than brilliant IT systems, they can become difficult to get your head around. 🫤 In this video, I focus on the basics of Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club loyalty programme. 💪
Many viewers in the UK will be familiar with British Airways Executive Club but may wish to dip their toe into an alternative programme. Virgin's Flying Club is your best option.
In this video, I cover:
- the basics of tiers and their general benefits
- what are Virgin Points (miles) and the difference to Tier Points?
- what does Virgin joining SkyTeam change about the airline?
- who are Virgin's global partners?
- how to find award seats on Virgin and all their partners?
- finally, how to book the award seats
While that may sound simple...it is actually a lot more complex than you expect. I suspect many people may find this video a bit dry and long...but if you do find it interesting or have any questions, pop them down below 👇. It's highly likely I've also missed some details, so if there's anything major, be sure to drop us a comment.
Thank you for watching! I will be back with a video review on one of Virgin's SkyTeam partners, KLM, in the next couple of weeks.

Some RAF airmen have set up a Flying club. Sequence includes shots of red Tiger Moth aircraft . M/S air to air shots of the classic fifties aircraft, the Canberra light bomber, flying in formation. Bombers fly low over camera . Man on the ground directs the aircraft in, M/S notice saying 'danger ejection seat'. A man opens the door of the Canberra, and the crew, dressed in grey flying suits with orange life jackets climb out. They walk across to the Tiger Moths. The crew are resting outside a hut on the airfield - one has a model aircraft.
M/S of a airman in leather jacket as he puts on his leather helmet, and climbs into the aircraft. M/S - he waves that he is ready - man starts propeller, and M/S of the Tiger Moth as the chocks are pulled away, and the plane is seen as it moves off, and then is seen taking off. Lovely air to air shots of the red Tiger Moth in flight - blue sky and fields below.

In this video we'll detail the costs of owning an older fabric airplane like an Aeronca Champ, J-3 Cub, or Taylorcraft. We'll also explore the differences in owning it outright, versus starting up a flying club with a few other people to share some of the fixed costs.

After 16 years down under, Jules Hudson helps a couple to relocate back to Blighty. Their £450,000 budget might not stretch quite as far in Lancashire as it did in Oz, but Jules still has a great selection of properties that are reminiscent of the home they left behind. He also manages to squeeze in a visit to a nature reserve that was created at a quarry used to build the UK’s first motorway.
