Prince Escalus, the Prince of Verona, is the Conflictor of the feuding families. Escalus is the voice of authority in Verona. He appears only three times within the text and only to administer justice following major events in the feud between the Capulet and Montague families. He first punishes Capulet and Montague for the quarrel between Tybalt, Benvolio, and a handful of servants. He returns too late to stop the fatal brawls between Tybalt and Mercutio and, subsequently, Tybalt and Romeo. Escalus is prepared to execute Romeo for his offense—Romeo's killing Tybalt—but lightens the sentence to lifetime banishment from Verona, when Benvolio insists that Tybalt started the quarrel by murdering Mercutio, a kinsman to the Prince. Prince Escalus returns in the final scene—V.iii—following the double suicide of Romeo and Juliet, and at last orders the lords of the feuding families to make peace.
Today we take a look at Lord and Lady Montague in William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Text referenced: Gamboa, Brett, 'Shakespeare’s Double Plays: Dramatic Economy on the Early Modern Stage’ (Cambridge University Press, 2018)
The animation was created using Procreate on the iPad. This app has a function allowing you to essentially trace a photo using an Apple Pencil, which is how I completed the drawing. I used an image of Lord and Lady Montague from the 1968 version of 'Romeo and Juliet'.

Welcome to the fourteenth video in my "'Romeo and Juliet' GCSE English Literature Revision" series! In this video, I analyse the characters of Lord and Lady Montague, two characters in Shakespeare's play. I discuss who they are, their story-roles, and how they might symbolise authority and tradition. I also analyse a bunch of quotations that relate to these characters, incorporating occasional contextual information as I go. Right at the end of this video, there's even a 'big question' for you to consider as well!

ABOUT LADIES OF LONDON:
London calls to the women in season three as they work through heartbreak, family drama and exciting, new adventures. The ladies also welcome soon-to-be ex sister in law of Caroline Stanbury, Sophie Stanbury into the group. With her pending divorce, Sophie is ready to mix things up and step out of the shadow of her former life. Julie Montagu comes into her own as she fully embraces the responsibilities as the future Countess of Sandwich overseeing the 400 year old Mapperton Estate while simultaneously vying for the top spot among the women. Marissa Hermer struggles with the pregnancy and birth of her daughter, Sadie. Meanwhile, the life-threatening illness of her father forces Caroline Fleming to come face-to-face with years of family turmoil and the legacy of preserving her childhood Denmark estate, Valdemar’s Slot. Juliet Angus works to turn her fashion blog into a major business and continues her steadfast loyalty to Caroline Stanbury. Battling a tough decision to move her family to Dubai, Caroline Stanbury faces numerous challenges including rumors of legal issues that begin to surface regarding her business. She also struggles with longtime friend Adela King, who, despite their history, is not interested in having Caroline reign among the group. With a season full of lavish travel, surprising betrayals and cheeky confrontations, the stakes are higher than ever as the ladies rival it out in an epic season three.
