However, since his capture and imprisonment in 1999, the leader of the PKK, Abdullah Öcalan, has completely abandoned Marxism–Leninism, leading the party to adopt his new political platform of "Democratic Confederalism" (influenced strongly by the libertarian socialist philosophy of communalism) while ceasing its official calls for the establishment of a fully independent country. In May 2007, former members of the PKK helped form the KCK, an umbrella organisation of Kurds from Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. On 20 March 2005, Öcalan described the need for a democratic confederalism and went on to say:
The Workers' Party (Portuguese:Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT) is a center-left political party in Brazil. Launched in 1980, it is one of the largest left-wing movements of Latin America. It governs at the federal level in a coalition government with several other parties since January 1, 2003. After the 2002 parliamentary election, PT became the largest party in the Chamber of Deputies and the largest in the Federal Senate for the first time ever.Lula, the President with the highest approval rating in the history of the country, is PT's most prominent member. His successor, Dilma Rousseff, is also a member of PT; she took office on January 1, 2011. The party's symbols are the red flag with a white star in the center; the five-pointed red star, inscribed with the initials "PT" in the center; and the Workers Party's anthem. Workers' Party's TSE (Supreme Electoral Court) Identification Number is 13.
Both born from the opposition to the coup d'état of 1964 and the subsequent military dictatorship, Workers' Party (PT) and the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) are since the mid-1990s the biggest adversaries in contemporary Brazilian politics, with their candidates finishing either first or second on the ballot on the last six presidential elections. Both parties generally prohibit any kind of coalition or official cooperation with each other.
The mountainous lands of this area first encouraged Aryan tribes to settle in this region after their immigration to Iran. It was from here where the first plan to overthrow the Assyrian Empire began, leading to their defeat in 612 BCE, and setting the stage for the commence of the Median empire.

Who are the Kurds and why don't they have their own country? | DW News
Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a homeland of their own. Almost half of the world's Kurds live in Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Germany. Most are Sunni Muslims, but many adhere to other faiths. They have faced a long history of violent oppression and discrimination in the countries they live in and their attempts to set up an independent state have repeatedly been quashed. After World War One, they were promised their own state, which never materialized. The defeat of the Ottoman Empire resulted in the end of that opportunity for a Kurdish homeland. Moscow's Kurdish community today marked the 22nd anniversary of the founding of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) with a gala performance at the Kosmos movie-house.
Kurdish performers, dressed in national costumes, danced and sang on the stage adorned with a huge portrait of P-K-K leader Abdullah Ocalan, sentenced to death by a Turkish military court.
After decades of armed struggle against Turkey, P-K-K has declared a 'political phase' in its campaign and has lowered its objective from outright independence to cultural autonomy.
The European community is currently reviewing an appeal by Ocalan's lawyers against his sentence.

"It should be written into the constitution that apart from Turks, there are Kurds and other ethnic groups in Turkey. This implies the ban on the Kurdish language should be lifted, Kurdish national schools should be opened, television and other media bodies should be allowed. (3 Dec 2000) Natural Sound
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"The only guarantee of Ocalan's life is his people. He had given them a new life, organised and inspired them for struggle."

SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"It should be written into the constitution that apart from Turks, there are Kurds and other ethnic groups in Turkey. This implies the ban on the Kurdish language should be lifted, Kurdish national schools should be opened, television and other media bodies should be allowed. In general, cultural autonomy should be established."
SUPER CAPTION: Merabi Shamoyev, Moscow Kurdish Leader

FRANCE 24 brings you a rare look inside the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers' Party, in the midst of fighting a guerrilla war against the Turkish army and the Islamic State group.
Some, such as the United States and the European Union, see them as terrorists, others as saviours. PKK fighters are waging a war on two fronts, between Turkey and Iraq. FRANCE 24 was able to meet several members of the group in their stronghold of the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq.

Five people have been killed and 22 others have been injured in a suspected terror attack on an aerospace company in Turkey.
CCTV shows suspects opening fire inside the state-owned Turkish Aerospace Industries headquarters in Ankara, with large explosions later seen from outside the building.
Authorities have said that two suspects have been “neutralised”, and confirmed that four of the victims were employees of the company while another was a taxi driver.
Government officials have said they believe the Kurdish rebel group the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is responsible for the attack.
The group, which has been fighting against the state since the 1980s, has not yet claimed responsibility.
