Brazilian Military deployed, Civil Unrest intensifies 48 hours Before World Cup
The Brazilian government has launched one of the largest Military operations since the 1950s. Over 200,000 troops have been deployed all over Brazil in preparation for the World Cup. Meanwhile, around Salvador's Fonte Nova stadium, security forces have been tasked with forcibly removing the homeless. As workers continue to intensify their actions, Amnesty International warns the Brazilian government's response to protests and strikes could lead to indiscriminate violence.

What happened when these 6 dictators took over? - Stephanie Honchell Smith
Examine the myth of the benevolent dictator, which is a leader who holds absolute power yet only uses it for the common good.
--
Under certain conditions, the idea of a dictator can sound appealing, like when a democracy isn’t functioning as it should due to corruption or political polarization. People may believe the solution is a "benevolent dictator"— a leader who only uses their absolute power for the common good. But can such a leader actually exist in today’s world? Stephanie Honchell Smith examines this common myth.

Inside a Military Dictatorship (Myanmar Documentary) | Real Stories
Myanmar’s path to democracy leads along the bumpy road of a 50-year military dictatorship. Long stretches were traversed with the incomparable endurance of the hopes of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Finally in power after more than 20 years of house arrest, the grave human rights violations against the Muslim minority of the Rohingya nevertheless continue across the country. Myanmar provides the setting for a seemingly absurd political power game. Filmmaker Karen Stokkendal Poulsen pointed her camera at the former peace icon and the retired generals to provide a captivating investigative exploration of the opposing coexistence of a woman and the military. The story of a political miracle, which, unfortunately, ceased to be one.

The Gen Z army fighting Myanmar's military dictator
Channel 4 News gains rare access to the Gen Z rebels fighting the military dictatorship in Myanmar and hears how the young fighters are willing to kill and die for democracy.
(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Two years since the military junta seized power in Myanmar, a fierce guerilla war is intensifying as protesters, who pleaded for a return to democratic rule two years ago, have now picked up weapons to fight for their freedom.
Amid accusations of indiscriminate bombing campaigns, the regime doesn’t want the outside world to see what they’re doing in Myanmar but Channel 4 News travelled secretly into the country to speak to the young rebels.
We contacted Myanmar's military authorities requesting an interview or comment. We have not received a reply.

Myanmar, from democracy to military dictatorship • FRANCE 24 English
Myanmar's junta has executed four prisoners including a former lawmaker from Aung San Suu Kyi's party and a prominent activist, state media said Monday, in the country's first use of capital punishment in decades. The executions sparked widespread condemnation, heightened fears that more death sentences will follow, and prompted calls for the international community to take sterner measures against the already isolated junta.

Idi Amin - The Dictator who ATE his enemies
Known as ‘Big Daddy’ by his supporters and ‘The Butcher’ by his critics, Idi Amin went from being a dirt-poor illiterate boy from a town in north-west Uganda so remote nobody knows its name, to becoming the third president of Uganda, a speaker on the global political stage. He was infamous for his ruthless stomping down of perceived traitors, expulsions of non-Africans, his widespread terror, and his taking joy in humiliation.

Channel 4 News gains rare access to the Gen Z rebels fighting the military dictatorship in Myanmar and hears how the young fighters are willing to kill and die for democracy.

The Awful Story of South America's Most Evil Dictator
This is the story of state terror in Argentina in the ‘70s and ‘80s: what is traditionally called the “Dirty War.” It’s the story of how a military regime, led mainly by a dictator named Jorge Videla, tortured and killed tens of thousands of people while implementing neoliberal economic “reforms.” But it’s also the story of how they were helped along in that process by people like Henry Kissinger and Elliot Abrams – and how those accomplices were never punished. Pablo Pryluka, PhD student in Latin American history at Princeton University, explains.

Atención! Murderer Next Door | An Emmy-Winning Op-Doc
Faced with a lack of prosecution of those accused of crimes against humanity committed during Argentina’s military dictatorship, family members and descendants of the country’s estimated 30,000 disappeared took action. In the mid-1990s, they began gathering outside of accused perpetrators’ homes and workplaces to publicly shame them and raise awareness about the government’s systematic and brutal targeting of its people — and how it had gone unpunished. The human rights group HIJOS (Sons and Daughters for Identity and Justice Against Forgetfulness and Silence) led and labeled this direct-action style of protest “escrache,” or exposure.
After years of organizing and sustained pressure from activist groups like HIJOS, the amnesty laws protecting the perpetrators were repealed. In Sean Matti...

In Sean Mattison's "Atención! Murderer Next Door," we see how peaceful protests ensured that the perpetrators could no longer live in quiet anonymity. Now “escrache” is an important tool for activists seeking justice worldwide.

The National Reorganization Process (Spanish: Proceso de Reorganización Nacional, often simply el Proceso, "the Process") was the name used by its leaders for the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983. In Argentina it is often known simply as la última junta militar (the last military junta) or la última dictadura cívico-militar (the last civil-military dictatorship), because there have been several. The Argentine military seized political power during the March 1976 coup, as part of the Operation Condor over the presidency of Isabel Perón, widow of former President Juan Domingo Perón; a time of state terrorism against civilians (as well as neoliberal economic policies) started, with the dictatorship labeling its own use of torture, extrajudicial murder and systematic forced disappearances as "a Dirty War". After losing the Falklands War to the United Kingdom in 1982, the military junta faced mounting public opposition and finally relinquished power in 1983.
Almost all of the Junta members are currently serving sentences for crimes against humanity and genocide.
