The language of Strathclyde, and that of the Britons in surrounding areas under non-native rulership, is known as Cumbric, a dialect or language closely related to Old Welsh. Scottish toponymy and archaeology points to some settlement by Vikings or Norse–Gaels (see Scandinavian Scotland), although to a lesser degree than in neighbouring Galloway. A small number of Anglian place-names show some limited settlement by incomers from Northumbria prior to the Norse settlement. Due to the series of language changes in the area, it is not possible to say whether any Goidelic settlement took place before Gaelic was introduced in the High Middle Ages.
The area was on the west coast of Scotland and stretched from the Highlands in the north to the Southern Uplands in the south. As a local government region, its population, in excess of 2.5 million, was the largest of the regions. The Region was responsible for education (from nursery to colleges); social work; police; fire; sewage; strategic planning; roads; transport - and, therefore, employed almost 100,000 public servants (almost half were teachers, lecturers and others in the education service).
The regional administrative headquarters was in the City of Glasgow and politics were by and large dominated by the Labour Party. The first regional council convener was the Reverend Geoff Shaw, who died in 1978. It was largely due to his leadership that the Region forged its innovative strategy on multiple deprivation, which remained its central commitment to the end of the Region's life through "Social Strategy for the Eighties" (1982) and "SS for the 90s".
Strathclyde, the former local government region of Scotland, 1973 to 1996, which still serves as a police force area, a fire service area, and a transport authority area, covered by:

Strathclyde and the Norse | Scotland in the Viking Age
The Kingdom of Strathclyde was one of the Celtic kingdoms that made up the Hen Ogledd (Old North), and was the one that survived the longest of all the North British kingdoms in the Early Middle Ages. As Sarah, my guest on the History with Hilbert Podcast a few days ago, explains, the Viking Age caused major upheaval in Southwestern Scotland. The old Kingdom of Alt Clut or Ystrad Clut was destroyed with the Viking raid on Dumbarton Rock in 870 AD, though from its ashes the newly named kingdom of Strathclyde would rise to thrust southwards and take the western parts of Northumbria which still bear the name Cumbria today as its legacy.

How Did Strathclyde Dominate the Picts in the Early Middle Ages?
The Kingdom of Strathclyde was one of the Celtic kingdoms that made up the Hen Ogledd (Old North), and was the one that survived the longest of all the North British kingdoms in the Early Middle Ages. As Sarah, my guest on the History with Hilbert Podcast a few days ago, explains, the Kingdom of Strathclyde was an important political player in Early Medieval Scotland and had power and influence in Pictland, and even supplied many Pictish kings. It's for this reason that she argues the kingdom might have survived as the only Northern Brittonic kingdom when the others such as Rheged, Elmet, the Gododdin and more were all conquered and didn't survive the seventh century.

Finding the best master's course can be a challenge.
Niamh speaks to us about why she chose to study Physics, how she made her decision to study at Strathclyde and her internship in the Department of Physics.
