Formation of the kingdom of Alba - part 1
This video is part of the Advanced Higher History course on Northern Britain, from the Iron Age to 1034. Part of a unit on Kingdom of Alba, it covers the factors behind the formation of Alba and its rise as a 'new' kingdom in Northern Britain by 900AD.
The content has been split into two videos. Part 1 covers the background to the formation of Alba, discussing when it was first recorded in the historical record with the death of the first 'King of Alba' in 900AD - Donald mac Constantine - before addressing the political landscape in Northern Britain at the end of the 9th century. The video then identifies four factors considered to play a role in the eventual formation of Alba: the role and conquests of King Kenneth macAlpine, the cultural amalgamation of the Gaels and the Picts, the unif...

A new power emerged in the wild north of Britain after the Roman withdrawal in the Fifth Century AD. It’s name was Dál Riata and it occupied the many islands and archipelagos on both sides of the wild sea between Ireland and Scotland. For a time during the late Sixth and early Seventh Centuries this sea kingdom prospered under the rule of it’s king, Áedán mac Gabráin, who sent his war fleets and trading vessels far and wide throughout the waterways of Northern Britain. Eventually over the centuries the Gaelic inhabitants of Dál Riata merged to a certain extent with the neighbouring Picts to eventually develop into the Kingdom of Scotland...

Did the Pictish People of Scotland Come from Scythia in Russia? Where did the Picts come from? In one legend, the Picts were descended from the ancient Irish goddess, Brighid. In Irish mythology, Brighid is part of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a supernatural race who are often associated with stories of ancient fairies. Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

This video - part 1 of a pair - will then go on to cover factors 1 and 2: the role and conquests of King Kenneth macAlpine and the cultural amalgamation of the Gaels and the Picts.

Have you ever wondered who was the first king of Scotland? Well, wonder no more because today we delve into Scottish history to answer this question. So travel with us through this exciting tale of history!
If you enjoy these watching me explaining who the first king/ruler of *insert country here* then please let me know down in the comments and tell me what country I should do next.
I'm very excited for the videos I have planned so stay tuned for those. I am trying to upload at least 2 times a month and then maybe gradually increase the number once I can handle uploading consistently. This also wouldn't be a Tales of History video if there weren't any mispronunciations. The reason I pronounced it "MacAplin" instead of "MacAlpin" is because I spelt his name wrong in my notes. It is a stupid mistake and I hope it didn't ruin the video for you.
P.S. Check out my other video titled "Who was the FIRST King of England?" if you enjoyed this video. You won't regret it ;)
Thank you all for taking the time to read the description and I hope to see you all in the next chapter! :)

Clan MacAlpin or Clan MacAlpine is a highland Scottish Clan originating in Argyll and Bute, western Scotland. According to Scottish tradition Clan MacAlpine is considered to be the oldest and most purely Celtic of the clans. The clan claims to have been descended from Kenneth Alpin, the first king of Scotland, who united the Picts and the Scots in the year 850. The surname MacAlpin is derived from the term for the son of the blond one or the son of Alpin. Seven other clans also claim to be descendants of King Alpin and are collectively referred to as Siol Alpin. These clans are, Clan Grant, Clan Gregor, Clan MacAulay, Clan Macfie, Clan Mackinnon, Clan Macnab, and Clan MacQuarrie.
The motto of the clan is Cuimhnich Bàs Ailpein which means “Remember the Death of Alpin” and the clans crest features a man bleeding from his neck.
Many believe that the historic seat of the clan was located, 3 miles outside of Oban, in the location where the present day Dunstaffnage Castle sits. This theory is based on evidence that the Stone of Destiny, used in the Coronation of Scottish kings for centuries, was kept at that location. Others scholars believe that the MacAlpine’s have a stronger connection to Iona and Dunadd and one of those locations were more likely to be their historic seat.
In 2016, MacAlpines from all over the world were summoned to a family gathering in Roxburghshire, Scotland. The purpose of this meeting was to find the rightful clan chief.
The commission chose Michael McAlpin to be the interim commander of the clan until the search for the proper chief is concluded. The convention was held under the supervision of a representative of The Lord Lyon King of Arms. Michael MacAlpin officially received his commission from the Lord Lyon on April 19th, 2017.

Watch: Are the Scots Descendants of the Ancient Scythians of Eurasia? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUlD9Cdz80g
Brighid is known to be the goddess of healing, protection, wisdom, poetry, blacksmithing and domesticated animals. According to some, Britain gets its name from Brighid.
Other origin stories of the Picts suggest that they originally came from Scythia in central Asia, around the Black Sea and the southern Russia region, and initially conquered the people of ancient Scotland. It is interesting that Scythia is mentioned in the origin of the Picts, a subject I have made a video on previously, as the Declaration of Arbroath mentions Scythia as the origin of the Scots. The reality however is that we are not sure where the Picts came from: where they indigenous people of the land or foreign conquerors? Let me know your thoughts in comments.
The Picts eventually merged with the Gaels and became assimilated in the Gaelic culture, with adoption of the Christian religion occurring as part of this process. Pictland gradually disappeared, replaced by the Kingdom of Alba in 843, when the Picts and the Gaels or Scots merged into one kingdom. Prior to this, Pictish kings controlled the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata for periods during the 8th century. For instance, the King of Picts, Óengus I, Son of Fergus, from 732 to 761 controlled Dál Riata.
Exactly how the Kingdom of Alba was formed is somewhat disputed, with some legends suggesting that many Pictish chiefs were deceitfully slaughtered by Kenneth MacAlpin, the first King of Alba, and were therefore forced to merge with the Scots. Known as the Treachery of Scone, the story goes that Kenneth MacAlpin, the King of the Scots or Gaels of Dál Riata, invited many Pictish nobles to a banquet. As the Pictish nobles eat, trap doors below their seats were released, revealing pits below that were filled with deadly spikes.
As the story goes, this episode allowed Kenneth I to conquer the Picts, merging the Scots and the Picts into the Kingdom of Alba. The Treachery of Scone story is considered to be historically inaccurate by many, and is probably more legend than history. In reality, the Picts and Scots probably merged largely because they were stronger together than divided.
