Cambridge Talks IX: "Inscriptions of Power; Spaces, Institutions, and Crisis" Part 2
Over two days, fostering dialogue between social scientists and spatial thinkers, an interdisciplinary gathering of scholars will explore the relationship between physical and institutional structures. How is institutional power manifested in the built environment? How does space bear the mark of bureaucratic networks, typological assumptions, lived experiences? How are different forms of power—aesthetic, political, economic, even insurgent—made manifest across boundaries and scales? The keynote lecture, at 6:30 on 4/2, is by Reinhold Martin, author of The Organizational Complex (MIT Press, 2001). Cambridge Talks is the annual conference organized by students in the PhD Program at Harvard GSD.

Photographs of Vera Prasilova Scott and Houston society in 1920s
Why are we so fascinated by old photographs? How do these fragile shadows of light survive? Who are these strangers looking at us so intently across 75 years?
These are just some of the questions raised by this wonderful collection of portraits safely preserved in MS 497 Vera Prasilova Scott's photos in Fondren Library's Woodson Research Center at Rice University.
Vera Prasilova Scott was a young woman born in 1899 in Bohemia. She arrived in Houston in 1926 with her husband, Arthur Scott. He was a new chemistry professor at Rice Institute; she was an artist, trained in Prague and Munich, highly skilled in the latest techniques and styles of European art photography.

A Fifth Avenue Masterpiece with open Central Park and Reservoir Views, this sprawling 12 room Pre-War Cooperative is pristine and ready to move in due to a recent full renovation by Ferguson Shamamian. The interiors were meticulously curated by the world-renowned designer, Bunny Williams, the distinguished expert in creating homes that are as grand and stylish as they are comfortable and serene. This residence is far from the exception, featuring finest quality finishes throughout and an atmosphere of sophistication that can be compared to nothing else available.
Stepping into the private jewel box 14th floor elevator landing, one is welcomed by spectacular light bouncing from the glossy custom patinaed Venetian Plaster adorning the walls of a double-wide Gallery and pouring through to illuminate the rest of the open yet classic floorplan. The main living space showcases direct Central Park views through 6 large tilt and turn windows, outfitted with automatic Lutron shades and custom dressings. This room is a master of refinement and balance accented with a woodburning fireplace and stone mantle. The walls of the Living Room are clad with custom coverings that are restrained but quietly luxurious and found throughout the apartment, with each room featuring a color and texture scheme as unique and beautiful as the next. Also throughout the home is pristine wide-plank Oak flooring accented by custom molding and classic millwork. A passageway between the Living Room and Den conveniently features a wet bar and functional storage, perfectly suited to entertain. Walking into the large Library, a fresh and calming shift in color intentionally sets an atmosphere for relaxation. This corner room features an entertainment wall with custom built in shelving and extra walk-in storage space.
Off the main Gallery, is a Formal Dining Room. The whimsical De Gournay wallpapered Dining Room is well proportioned for a serious dinner party or comfortable family dining together.
The large Chef’s Kitchen is accessible through either the dining service door or main entrance and boasts custom cabinetry artfully designed by Ferguson Shamamian and top of the line fixtures by WaterWorks. Custom marble countertops accent the cabinetry and fixtures perfectly. Two Sub-Zero refrigerators seamlessly blend into the surrounding cabinetry with matching surface millwork. The star of the room is the vibrant Lacanche 7-burner Range and Dual-Oven and makes this kitchen a true chef’s dream. This heart of the home is complete with a sun filled and bright Breakfast Room, with built-in bench storage and wall to wall windows.
The Bedroom Wing includes 5 bedrooms, a Staff Suite, and a beautifully balanced Primary Bedroom Suite. This serene sanctuary showcases another wood-burning Fireplace and a handsome Home Office/Study. The Spa Bathroom boasts a marble top double vanity, oversized bathtub, walk in shower, and two Dressing Rooms. As an added touch, select closets in the primary wing have interiors built of Cedar Wood. The conveniently located Laundry Room spans approximately 20 feet and features a washing basin, storage and top-quality Washer and Dryer. Additional features include central, multi-zone HVAC, Lutron Custom Lighting, and Tarr designed interior technologies including surround sound and networking.
1158 Fifth Avenue is a French Renaissance designed prewar building completed in 1924 and incorporated in 1945. Designed by C. Howard Krane and Kenneth Franzheim, the Landmarked building sits on a 3-story limestone base clad in tan brick and iron detailing. Residents are serviced by a full-time staff of doormen and concierges as well as a live-in resident manager. Amenities include a fitness center, private storage, bicycle storage and central laundry. Financing permitted up to 40% and pets are permitted.

Join Barrie Scardino Bradley for an online conversation and look at her new book, Improbable Metropolis: Houston’s Architectural and Urban History.
Synopsis: Just over 180 years ago, the city of Houston was nothing more than an alligator-infested swamp along the Buffalo Bayou that spread onto a flat, endless plain. Today, it is a sprawling, architecturally and culturally diverse metropolis. How did one transform into the other in such a short period?
Improbable Metropolis uses the built environment as a guide to explore the remarkable evolution that Houston has undergone from 1836 to the present. Houston’s architecture, an indicator of its culture and prosperity, has been inconsistent, often predictable, sometimes bizarre, and occasionally extraordinary. Industries from cotton, lumber, sugar, and rail and water transportation, to petroleum, healthcare, biomedical research, and aerospace have each in turn brought profit and attention to Houston. Each created an associated building boom, expanding the city’s architectural sophistication, its footprint, and its cultural breadth. Providing a template for architectural investigations of other American cities, Improbable Metropolis is an important addition to the literature on Texas history.

She opened a studio and for ten years made exquisitely lighted and frequently emotionally charged portraits of Houston society.
