Born in Vilnius, he emigrated in 1978 with his musician parents to Austria. In 1983, he entered the Konservatorium Wien and studied violin in the Soviet tradition with Boris Kuschnir, while also receiving private lessons from Pinchas Zukerman. His career as a child prodigy began with his first public concert in 1984.
In 2000, he joined Rostropovich and Yuri Bashmet, among others, in the premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's Sextet. The same year, Rachlin also founded his own music festival in Dubrovnik, "Julian Rachlin and Friends". Since 2000, he has also played the concerto and chamber repertoire for the viola.
Karelia Music was written in the beginning of Sibelius' compositional career, and the complete music consists of an Overture, 8 Tableaux, and 2 Intermezzi. The music runs about 44 minutes, as opposed to the suite, which lasts about 12 minutes.
The rough-hewn character of the music was deliberate - the aesthetic intention was not to dazzle with technique but to capture the quality of "naive," folk-based authenticity. Historical comments have noted the nationalistic character of the music.
Orchestration
Ralph Wood has commented on the role of the percussion in this composition.
History
"The noise in the hall was like an ocean in a storm. I was at the opposite end of the hall and could not distinguish a single note. The audience did not have the patience to listen and was hardly aware of the music. The orchestra was actually there, behind the pillars. I thrust my way through the crowd and managed to reach the orchestra after a good deal of effort. There were a few listeners. Just a handful."
Various subdivisions may be called Karelia. Finnish Karelia was a historical province of Finland, and is now divided between Finland and Russia, often called just Karjala in Finnish. The eastern part of this chiefly Lutheran area was ceded to Russia after the Winter War of 1939–40. This area is the "Karelia" of the Karelian question in Finnish politics.
The Republic of Karelia is a Russian federal subject, including the so-called "East Karelia" with a chiefly Russian Orthodox population.
Karelia Fine Tobaccos is the name of the oldest tobacco company in Greece. It was founded in 1888 in Kalamata, where it has its headquarters until today .It is the leading exporter of cigarettes in Greece with exports to 65 countries. The company is led by Victoria Karelia as chairman. The Karelias family have an estimated fortune of around €200 million.
Karelia is a French heavy metal band created in 2000 by Lionel Vest and Matthieu Kleiber.
Biography
Karelia first released a self-titled demo in 2000.
Their first full-length album Usual Tragedy was released in 2004 on the German label Drakkar Records. The orchestral arrangements give it its symphonic heavy metal (or simply symphonic metal) tag. Lyricwise, Usual Tragedy is a concept album about a man who crossed both World Wars, lost his father during the first one, lost his beloved one during the second one, witnessed the violence and the madness of men, eventually lost his own sanity and died alone and anonymous in an hospital.
Their second studio album, Raise, released in 2005 on Drakkar Records as well, is not as orchestral as Usual Tragedy but has dark, melancholic atmospheres that could already be heard on the first album as well and that seem to be the band's trademark; that's why Karelia's music is also sometimes called gothic metal. The lyrics deal with various themes such as blinding and misleading of people by a charismatic leader ("Raise"), religion wars ("Cross and Crescent"), childhood ("Child Has Gone", "Unbreakable Cordon"), depression ("Breakdown").
Why You Need to See Karelia | Russia’s Hidden Gems | Banya, Kizhi and Lake Onega
Have you ever heard of Karelia? This remote region lies in the far north of Europe, on Russia’s border with Finland, and is a travel destination for those in the know. Karelia has centuries old traditions and stunning natural landscapes with vast lakes. We visit Lake Onega, Europe’s second largest lake, taste kalitki, a regional dish, go to the Banya, a traditional “black sauna”, and much more.

Karelian (North Karelian and Livvi Karelian: karjala, karjalan kieli; Ludic: kard'al, kard'alan kiel'; Tver Karelian: kariela, karielan kieli) is a Finnic language spoken mainly in the Russian Republic of Karelia. Linguistically, Karelian is closely related to the Finnish dialects spoken in eastern Finland, and some Finnish linguists have even classified Karelian as a dialect of Finnish, though in the modern day it is widely considered a separate language. Karelian is not to be confused with the Southeastern dialects of Finnish, sometimes referred to as karjalaismurteet ("Karelian dialects") in Finland.[5] In the Russian 2020-2021 census, around 9,000 people spoke Karelian natively, but around 14,000 said to be able to speak the language.

Welcome to the journey through the region of Karelia, once a part of Finland, now nestled within the vast expanse of Russia. In this exploration, we delve deep into the rich Finnish heritage that lingers in the landscapes, architecture, and culture of Karelia, often overshadowed by the passage of time.
As we traverse through picturesque landscapes and visit peculiar sites, we uncover the traces of a bygone era when Karelia was an integral part of Finland. From quaint villages to historic landmarks, we reveal the hidden gems that connect Karelia to its Finnish past.
But this adventure is not just about history; it's also about the present. I provide an intimate look into life in Russia during the challenging times of sanctions imposed in 2022-2023. Through personal stories and encounters with locals, I gain insight into the resilience and adaptability of the people of Karelia as they navigate these turbulent times.

If you are interested to see your native language/dialect be featured here.
