The Karachays (Къарачайлыла, Qaraçaylıla) are a Turkic people descended from the Kipchaks, and share their language with the Kumyks from Daghestan. In Turkic, "Karachay" means "Black River".
The Kipchaks (Cumans) came to the Caucasus in the 11th century AD.
The state of Alania was established prior to the Mongol invasions and had its capital in Maghas, which some authors locate in Arkhyz, the mountains currently inhabited by the Karachay, while others place it in either what is now modern Ingushetia or North Ossetia. In the 14th century, Alania was destroyed by Timur and the decimated population dispersed into the mountains. Timur's incursion into the North Caucasus introduced the local nations to Islam.
In the nineteenth century Russia took over the area during the Russian conquest of the Caucasus. On October 20, 1828 the Battle of Khasauka took place, in which the Russian troops were under the command of General Georgy Emanuel. The day after the battle, as Russian troops were approaching the aul of Kart-Dzhurt, the Karachay elders met with the Russian leaders and an agreement was reached for the inclusion of the Karachay into the Russian Empire.

In the 20th, the divide-and-rule tactics of the Stalin era involved weakening resistance by splitting related groups and joining unrelated ones in shared administrative units. As part of this pattern, the Karachay-Cherkessia Autonomous Region was first created in 1922. Several further administrative adjustments and readjustments followed.
3. In 1943 the Karachay people were deported to Central Asia for alleged collaboration with the Nazis. They were allowed back in 1957 and the Karachay-Cherkess autonomous region recreated.
4. Cherkessk is the largest city and the capital of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.
5. The republic’s scenery is spectacular, with densely forested mountains rising through alpine meadows to rock and ice. Mild and warm climate of Dombay perfectly blends with its snowy winters.
6. The republic is the home of what was the largest telescope in the world from 1975 until 1993 (the BTA-6), a very large radio telescope (600 meters in diameter, RATAN-600), and the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Science dedicated to the study of astronomy.
7. Ethnic tension is a considerable problem in the republic. Although activity by separatists in the region pales in comparison with Chechnya and Dagestan, militant groups exist in Karachay-Cherkessia.

That's probably Kanamat's mother crying [for him].
During the battle, there was not in his hands
The white-headed dagger that the Digor Aznor gave him.
Oh, Ebzeleni, born a brave man, Qanamat.
Even though you're a tulpar, it didn't help you on the day you died.
You fell to the ground, unable to withstand a Berdan [2] cartridge.
You swore an oath not to leave the enemy alive.
Notes:
1) Tulpar is a brave man, a hero
2) A cartridge from a Berdan rifle.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. The Karachay-Cherkess Republic is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia. Karachay-Cherkessia is one of Russia's ethnic republics, primarily representing the indigenous Karachay people and Cherkess people. Karachays form the largest ethnic group at around 40% of the population, followed by ethnic Russians (30%) and Cherkess (12%).
2. The region was absorbed by an expanding Russian Empire in the first half of the 19th century.

Turkic Karachay Balkar (Alan) folk song. Caucasian Nart Epos
The Balkars are a Turkic people of the Caucasus region, who share their language with the Karachays from Karachay-Cherkessia and Kumyks from Dagestan, descended from the Kipchaks.
Karachay people are very independent, and have strong traditions and customs which dominate many aspects of their lives: e.g. weddings, funerals, and family pronouncements. They are fiercely loyal to both their immediate family and their "tukum".
They will never offend a guest. Cowardice is the most serious shame for a male.
Karachay-Balkar is a Turkic language spoken by about 240,000 people mainly in Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia, and also in Kazakhstan, Kyrghyzstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
The name Balkar is derived from Bolgar or Bulgar and it was relatives of the Balkar people how gave Bulgaria its name.

I've got a unique opportunity to live inside of the Teberdinsky National Park with rangers of the reserve, and to visit off-the-beaten path places of the park. The park is located near Teberda town in Karachay-Cherkessia. It's a republic in the north of the Caucasus mountains in Russia that is a real heaven for lovers of hiking and mountains. I tried to show you the atmosphere in the park through my walk to one of the most scenic places. Join my hike with this video :)

Oh, Ebzeleni, born a hero, Qanamat.
Even though you are a tulpar [1], it did not help you on the day of your death.
If their numbers were smaller,
You would have fought the dogs that killed you.
