Philip Hampson "Phil" Knight (born February 24, 1938) is an American business magnate and philanthropist. A native of Oregon, he is the co-founder and chairman of Nike, Inc., and previously served as CEO of the company. In November 2015, Forbes named Knight the 15th richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of US$28.1 billion. He is also the owner of the stop motion film production company Laika.
A graduate of the University of Oregon and Stanford Graduate School of Business (Stanford GSB), he has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to both schools; Knight gave the largest donation in history at the time to Stanford's business school in 2006. A native Oregonian, he ran track under coach Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon, with whom he would co-found Nike.
Early life
Knight was born in Portland, Oregon, the son of lawyer turned newspaper publisher William W. Knight, and his wife Lota (Hatfield) Knight. Knight grew up in the Portland neighborhood of Eastmoreland, and attended Cleveland High School. According to one source, "When his father refused to give him a summer job at his newspaper [the Oregon Journal], believing that his son should find work on his own, Phil went to the rival Oregonian, where he worked the night shift tabulating sports scores every morning and running home the full seven miles."
Knight was the son of Edward Knight, who was himself the eldest son of Edward Austen Knight, the brother of the novelist Jane Austen who changed his own family name to "Knight" in 1812 in order to inherit substantial landholdings in Kent and Hampshire. Edward Knight and three of his brothers (George Thomas, Henry and Brook) played first-class cricket; one of Philip Knight's brothers and several brothers-in-law also played.
Joseph Philip Knight (Bradford-on-Avon, 6 July 1812–Great Yarmouth, 1 June 1887) was a British clergyman, singer and one of Britain's most popular song composers. He published over 200 songs, first under the name Philip Mortimer then under his own name.
Knight was the son of an Anglican clergyman, Rev. Francis Knight, and went to America in 1829 to sing and teach music. He set many of the lyrics of Thomas Haynes Bayley, and Thomas Moore wrote the words for him for " The Parting " and " Let's take the world as some wide scene."

It became a beloved piece in the repertoire of many amateur and professional musicians during the Victorian era. The song's sentimental, religious-themed lyrics and lulling musical style made it a popular choice for both home and church performances.” (Claude, 11/11/24). Here are Willard's lyrics:
"Verse 1:
Rocked in the cradle of the deep,
I lay me down in peace to sleep;
Secure I rest upon the wave,
For thou, O Lord, hast power to save;
I know thou wilt not slight my call,
For thou dost mark the sparrow's fall!
And calm and peaceful is my sleep,
Rocked in the cradle of the deep;
And calm and peaceful is my sleep,
Rocked in the cradle of the deep.
Verse 2:
And such the trust that still were mine,
Though stormy winds swept o'er the brine;
Or though the tempest's fiery breath
Roused me from sleep to wreck and death!
In ocean cave, still safe with thee,
The gem of immortality;
And calm and peaceful is my sleep,
Rocked in the cradle of the deep;
And calm and peaceful is my sleep,
Rocked in the cradle of the deep."
