This school is one of Portland's two high schools with the International Baccalaureate program. It is also one of the two high schools in the Portland Public School District to receive an A on its government "Report Card," based on its students' test and SAT scores.
History
Cleveland was originally known as Clinton Kelly High School of Commerce and was a trades school. It was designed by the architect George Howell Jones. As a result of the baby boom and the passing of a $25 million building levy by the school district in 1947, an "athletic field house" was slated. Commerce was turned into a comprehensive high school in fall 1948 and renamed Grover Cleveland High School. Science labs were also added at this time.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the school district faced declining enrollment, and targeted Cleveland for closure. The CHS property was made up of two parcels: the school building site and the athletic field, originally the site of the Clinton Kelly home. Clinton Kelly, an early Portland settler and minister, specified that the property was to be used solely for a public school. If the property was used for any other purpose, or put up for sale, the property would revert to the Kelly estate, and to the living heirs of Clinton Kelly. The school district ultimately decided to close Washington-Monroe High School instead, and keep Cleveland open.
Portland Union Station is an Amtraktrain station near the west shore of the Willamette River in the Old Town Chinatown section of Portland, Oregon, United States. The station building also contains offices on the upper floors, as well as Wilf's Restaurant and Piano Bar on the ground level. It also has Amtrak's first Metropolitan Lounge (reserved for first-class sleeping car passengers) on the West Coast.
Southeast of the station, the tracks make a sharp turn and cross the river on the historic Steel Bridge. To the northwest, they follow the river, passing through rail yards before crossing the river again on the Burlington Northern Railroad Bridge 5.1.
The Portland Development Commission earns $200,000 a year from nearly 30 tenants. Amtrak, the main tenant, has a lease through 2010 with a renewal option through 2015.
Cleveland High School is a public high school serving 630 students in grades 9-12, located in Cleveland, Mississippi.
History
Cleveland High School opened its doors October 15, 1906, with A. K. Eckles as principal. The original building, a two-story colonial design with four classrooms, was located where the present building now stands. The school’s first athletic event was a baseball game in April 1907. The CHS band was first organized in 1909 [there is strong evidence that suggests CHS had the first high school band in Mississippi]. The first graduation was held in June 1910; there were four graduates. An addition with an auditorium was added to the original structure in 1916. Fire destroyed this building in 1918.
A new, three-story brick building, designed to be the “largest and handsomest” school in Mississippi, was completed at the same location in 1921. On this campus in 1922, the movement that led to the creation of Delta State University began. CHS was the sponsor of Cleveland’s first Boy Scout troop, and, at various times, served as the meeting place of the First Methodist Church, the local Jewish community, the Rotary Club, the Exchange Club, and the Delta Medical Association. Also in 1922, CHS was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school’s first of 30 state championships was won in 1935 in Debate. During World War II, some 600 CHS alumni and students served in the U.S. military; sixteen made the ultimate sacrifice. The epicenter of patriotic activity in Cleveland during World War II, Cleveland High School’s second building was destroyed by fire Christmas Eve, 1945.
Cleveland High School is a public secondary school located in Seattle, Washington. It is part of the Seattle Public Schools. The building, designated a historic landmark by the City of Seattle in 1981, stands atop Beacon Hill. The original 1927 building underwent a $68 million renovation in 2007, when a new gym and classroom building were added.
The school overlooks Georgetown, Boeing Field, and the Duwamish River valley, an area that was once farmed by European immigrants but became heavily industrialized in the World War II era. The surrounding neighborhood on Beacon Hill is now primarily Asian, and most of the school's students are African American.
In 1993, Cleveland became the home to the Fish and Roses project. Fish and Roses integrated fish farming and hydroponics into the school's currculum. Mark Weber, the project originator, and Ted Howard,Sr. the Principal wanted to see the project used as the focus of a new math and science based school. A separate building was built with funding from Boeing and Costco to house the project but within a few years the building was razed to make room for the new gym and school remodel.
Cleveland High School (CHS) is a publichigh school in the Cleveland City Schoolssystem located in Cleveland, Tennessee. The school was founded in 1967 and serves 1,321 students in grades 9 to 12. The school's mascot is the Blue Raider, and its school colors are blue, white, and a little bit of red. The principal is Autumn O'Bryan. The school maintains a rivalry with the crosstown Bradley Central High School, as with their other crosstown rival Walker Valley High School.
History
In the late 1950s, a group of Cleveland citizens began working for a city high school. The first step was taken when a ninth grade was added to Arnold Junior High, now an elementary school. The new school was built in 1966, and in September of that year a historic walk took place from Arnold to the new high school to start the first year of school at CHS. Every year during homecoming week, a parade is held on Raider Drive to commemorate the anniversary of this historic walk.
In 1980 a new building was added on to the school to add extra career prep courses.
Northeast Ohio refers to a similar but substantially larger area. This article covers the area generally considered to be Greater Cleveland, but includes some information generally applicable to the larger region, which is itself part of what is known historically as the Connecticut Western Reserve.
In 1854, a church and convent was built by Father Peter La Cour near the town's present site.
The town began forming in 1878 when Charles Lander Cleveland, a local judge, donated 63.6 acres (257,000m2) of land to the Houston East & West Texas Railway (now part of the Union Pacific Railroad) for use as a stop, requesting that the town be named for him. Since 1900 Cleveland has served as the junction of this line and the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe (now the BNSF Railway). The town was not incorporated until 1935.
The forests around Cleveland, including Sam Houston National Forest, which is located just to its north, are a resort for many inhabitants of the Houston area, who come to camp, hike, hunt, and fish. Cleveland has several historic sites and public recreational facilities, including two parks. The Austin Memorial Library Center offers a wide range of services to the community, and the Texan Theater and the annual livestock show and rodeo, Dairy Days, provide entertainment. Commercially, Cleveland has been a shipping point for timber, lumber, and lumber byproducts since the 1870s. A large medical community, oil, gas, cattle, farm products, and sand and gravel are important to the town's economy. The general trend toward urbanization of the entire area is reflected by the fact that in 1965 Liberty County was added to the Houston Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Cleveland grew from 1,200 in 1930 to 7,605 according to the census of 2000.
