You have a coffee at the nurses' station, you put it down, and suddenly, someone says, "Hey, the Joint Commission is coming by. Watch out for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) — put your coffee down over there at that specific table." It's 2 feet away.

The mission of The Joint Commission is to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. Its vision is that all people always experience the safest, highest quality, best-value health care across all settings.
➡️ TJC and Respiratory Therapists:
Respiratory Therapists are often involved with surveyors from The Joint Commission whenever their facility is seeking accreditation. They are responsible for upholding the core performance measures of respiratory-related patient care. It should be noted that accreditation by The Joint Commission is usually a requirement for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements by the majority of state governments in the United States. Typically, healthcare organizations are subject to a three-year accreditation cycle by The Joint Commission that involves an unannounced survey and inspection. This means that each hospital or organization will not receive an advanced notice of the survey date. Instead, The Joint Commission shows up randomly to inspect the facility and ensure that medical care is being delivered according to their standards. If compliance is deemed applicable, accreditation is awarded to that organization.

I remember the first time I went through a Joint Commission survey I was very nervous. I wanted to curl up in my office and hide. I had been preparing for months and all the surveyor asked me was "do you have a nutrition care manual?" Months of preparation all boiled down to this one question. Go figure! Inset SMH emoji.
Surveyor after survey, I become more and more confidant. I studied the possible questions Joint Commission could ask. I made sure my HR file was up to job, I had a signed and dated job description, nutrition care manual was accessible to all hospital employees, the polices and procedures manual was up-to-date and that my staff knew the proper temperatures of food and dishwasher, could answer any question about a therapeutic diet, and knew the how to use a litmus test strip.
In today's video I want to prepare you for Joint Commission. Are you ready?
