Johnny’s breakout role was Tarzan the Ape Man. A producer saw him swimming at the Hollywood Athletic Club and knew he would be perfect for the part.
Johnny’s first film was a major success. He would go on to play the same role in a series of 11 films with a few smaller roles sprinkled in throughout his career.
Johnny’s athleticism and acting skills brought the character to life. Others have portrayed the ape-man since, but they haven’t been able to create quite the same magic. He even invented the famous Tarzan yell that’s still used today in every depiction of the character.
The actor’s sculpted body and friendly nature made him an instant hit with fans, especially the ladies. He became an international sex symbol and was married 5 times.
When he died of a serious heart condition, friends and family members were surprisingly absent at his funeral. His wife, locals who lived near his gravesite in Acapulco, and a chimpanzee named Samanta were the only attendants. They were the only ones around to hear his signature yell being played as he was lowered into the ground or see the 21-gun salute arranged for the film icon.
Johnny’s son Johnny Weissmuller Jr. also cultivated an acting career and played a range of roles. He honored his father’s legacy in several documentaries but also died suddenly from medical issues. He was the second of Johnny’s children to tragically pass away.
