John Wentworth (March 30, 1719 – May 17, 1781) was a jurist, soldier, and leader of the American Revolution in New Hampshire. He was often referred to as the Judge or as Colonel John to distinguish him from his cousin, the John Wentworth who was the colony's governor. He is descended from early New Hampshire settler William Wentworth and is a great grandfather to John Wentworth (Illinois).
Biography
This John Wentworth was born in Dover, New Hampshire. After service in the French and Indian War, he moved to Somersworth and was elected to the colonial assembly from 1768-1775. In that assembly he served several terms as speaker. He served as a judge of common pleas, and starting in 1776 as a justice in the New Hampshire supreme court, in spite of the fact that he neither studied nor practiced law.
As the revolution neared, he was active in the committees of correspondence, and later the Committee of Safety. After the Assembly was prorogued in 1774, a rebel counterpart met as the Exeter Convention. At their first meeting, on July 21 he was elected president. He died in Somersworth.
He was a grandson of "Elder" William Wentworth (born at Alford, Lincolnshire, England, in 1615; died in Dover, New Hampshire, March 16, 1697), an early settler in New England. William was a follower of the Rev. John Wheelwright. With him and 33 others, William signed, August 4, 1639, “A Combination for a Government at Exeter, N. H.” William moved to Wells, Maine, with Wheelwright; and when the latter went to England on the accession of Oliver Cromwell to power, William moved to Dover, where he was a ruling elder and often preached. On his death, he left a widow, nine sons, and one daughter.
John Wentworth was raised to be a sea captain. In 1712 he was appointed by Queen Anne a councillor for New Hampshire; in 1713 he became a justice of the common pleas, and late in 1717 lieutenant governor. Before New Hampshire received its own Royal Governor in 1741, its governors were also commissioned to govern the neighboring Province of Massachusetts Bay, where they spent most of their time. Consequently the lieutenant governors exercised significant power. As lieutenant governor, John Wentworth had little function in the government for several years. Then in January 1723, Governor Samuel Shute abruptly returned to England, so Wentworth took over in New Hampshire, governing until the arrival of Shute's replacement, William Burnet, in 1728. He continued as Lt. Governor until his death in 1730, again governing between Burnet's death in 1729 and the arrival of Jonathan Belcher in 1730. During his administration he brought focus on the border dispute between New Hampshire and Massachusetts, cultivating power centers in London that eventually led to resolution of that dispute (albeit in 1740, long after his death), and establishing the dynasty that would dominate New Hampshire until independence.

Local History: The Lieutenant Governor John Wentworth House and Five Women Named Sarah
While its beginnings have been the subject of many historical architects' debates, we know the South End mansion once owned by Lieutenant Governor John Wentworth (1671-1730) and his wife Sarah Hunking Wentworth (ca. 1673–1741) survived until taken down in 1926. This process was well documented because the best parts of the finish treatments went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The most likely beginning is that it was built by John Wentworth himself between 1695 and 1705. The elaborate interior paneling and stairway were probably added within a decade of its construction.
The occupants have been less well known. In this talk given in February 2022, historian Sandra Rux explores the lives of those who lived in the house during the time of Wentworth family ownership from the perspective o...

Rockingham and the Boston Tea Party | #wentworthwoodhouse |
It's the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Boston Tea Party on 16th December and here at Wentworth Woodhouse, we're taking a look at the remarkable life of Charles Watson-Wentworth, Second Marquis of Rockingham.
Charles was the British Prime Minister twice during the turbulent reign of George III, and the man who repealed the much hated Stamp Act. We share letters from Sir John Wentworth, the last Royal Governor of New Hampshire, Thomas Boone, the ex-Governor of New York and merchant Captain Samuel Cary of Boston, giving eye-witness accounts of events that led up to the Boston Tea Party and ultimately, the American Revolution.

The occupants have been less well known. In this talk given in February 2022, historian Sandra Rux explores the lives of those who lived in the house during the time of Wentworth family ownership from the perspective of five women named Sarah: Sarah Hunking Wentworth, wife of Lieutenant Governor John; Sarah Wentworth Macpheadris (1702-1778), daughter of Sarah and John and wife of Archibald Macpheadris; Sarah Hall Wentworth (1713-1790), wife of John Wentworth, a son of Lieutenant Governor John and Sarah Hunking; Sarah Wentworth Purcell, (1741-1789) daughter of Judge John and Sarah Hall; and Sarah Purcell Gardner (1770-1841), daughter of Sarah and Gregory Purcell and 3rd wife of William Gardner. Widows, children, men perishing at sea, and the American Revolution all play a part in this story.
Sandra Rux received a BA in History from the University of Connecticut and an MA in History from Trinity College, Hartford CT, and is a graduate of the Museum Studies program of the Munson Institute, Mystic Seaport Museum. Her business career was with AT&T in New York City. She came to Portsmouth in 2005 as the Synergy manager for the Portsmouth Historical Society, Warner House, and Wentworth-Gardner and Lear Houses before serving as manager and curator for the Portsmouth Historical Society until December 2014. Sandra was named Curator of the Warner House Association (2014-2019) and chairperson of the Portsmouth Athenaeum Exhibits Committee (2014-2021). A hand loom weaver herself, she has written about 19th century carpet weaving for the Dublin Seminar and in Corsets, Clocks and Locks, a book about the industrial development of New Haven, CT.
