Like all of the Confederacy's military forces, these generals answered to their civilian leadership, in particular Jefferson Davis, the South's president and therefore commander-in-chief of the Army, Navy, and Marines of the Confederate States.
History
Much of the design of the Confederate States Army was based on the structure and customs of the U.S. Army when the Confederate Congress established their War Department on February 21, 1861. The Confederate Army was composed of three parts; the Army of the Confederate States of America (ACSA, intended to be the permanent, regular army), the Provisional Army of the Confederate States (PACS, or "volunteer" Army, to be disbanded after hostilities), and the various Southern statemilitias.
Lieutenant (abbreviated Lt, LT, LT(N), Lieut and LEUT, depending on nation) is a commissioned officer rank in many nations' navies. It is typically the most senior of junior officer ranks. The rank's insignia usually consists of two medium gold braid stripes and often the uppermost stripe features a loop or executive curl.
The now immediately senior rank of lieutenant commander was formerly a senior naval lieutenant rank. Many navies also use a subordinate rank of sub-lieutenant. The appointment of "first lieutenant" in many navies is held by a senior lieutenant.
Since at least 1580, the lieutenants in a ship had been the officers immediately subordinate to the captain. Before the English Restoration, lieutenants were appointed by their captains, and this inevitably led to abuses and to the widespread appointment of men of insufficient qualification. In 1677, Samuel Pepys introduced the first examination for lieutenant, and it is from the date of this examination that their seniority was set.
aChafee served in prior offices as a Republican, but ran for Governor as an independent. On May 30, 2013, while in office, he switched his party affiliation to Democratic.
Other high offices held
This is a table of congressional seats, other federal offices, and other governorships held by governors. All representatives and senators mentioned represented Rhode Island except where noted. * denotes those offices which the governor resigned to take.
Living former U.S. governors of Rhode Island
As of May 2015, there are five former U.S. governors of Rhode Island who are currently living at this time, the oldest U.S. governor of Rhode Island being Philip W. Noel (1973–1977, born 1931). The most recent U.S. governor of Rhode Island to die was J. Joseph Garrahy (1977–1985) who died on January 24, 2012. The most recently serving U.S. governor of Rhode Island to die was Bruce Sundlun (1991–1995), on July 21, 2011.
The Governor of Massachusetts is the chief executive of the Commonwealth, and is supported by a number of subordinate officers. He, like most other state officers, senators, and representatives, was originally elected annually. In 1918 this was changed to a two-year term, and since 1966 the office of Governor has carried a four-year term. The Governor of Massachusetts does not receive a mansion, other official residence, or housing allowance. Instead, he resides in his own private residence. The title "His Excellency" is a throwback to the royally appointed Governors of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. The first Governor to use the title was Richard Coote, 1st Earl of Bellomont in 1699; since he was an Earl, it was thought proper to call him "Your Excellency." The title was retained until 1742, when an order from King George II forbade its further use. However, the framers of the state constitution revived it because they found it fitting to dignify the Governor with this title.
In Russia, the title governor refers to the chief executive of each the federal subjects of Russia, not directly subordinate to the federal authorities, but the political and ceremonial head of the federal subject. A governor in Russia is said to serve a gubernatorial administration.
Role and powers
The Constitution preserves the notion that the country is a federation of semi-sovereign federal subjects and that powers not specifically granted to the federal government are retained by the federal subjects. Federal subjects, therefore, are not administrative divisions. Regional governments in Russia are relatively powerful; each federal subject has its own independent criminal and civil law codes, as well as manages its internal government.
The governor thus heads the executive branch in the federal subjects and, depending on the individual jurisdiction, may have considerable control over government budgeting, the power of appointment of many officials (including many judges), and a considerable role in legislation. The governor may also have additional roles, and in many territories the governor has partial or absolute power to commute or pardon a criminalsentence. All governors serve five-year terms forno more than two terms in row.
General, Finnish:kenraali is the highest officer's rank in Sweden and Finland. In Sweden, it is held by the Supreme Commander (Swedish:överbefälhavare) of the Swedish Armed Forces and the monarch. In Finland, it is held by the Chief of Defence. In Sweden, the monarch still holds the nominal rank of General as well as Admiral and General of the Air Force.
In peacetime the rank of Full General is reserved for the Commander of Finnish Defence Forces. Sometimes a General's branch of service is indicated in the rank. So far Finland has had seventeen of jalkaväenkenraali (General of Infantry), a few of jääkärikenraali (Jägergeneral), two of ratsuväenkenraali (General of Cavalry) and one tykistönkenraali (General of Artillery). Marshal Mannerheim himself was the other one of the two Generals of Cavalry before his promotion to Field Marshal.
-General Secretario de la Defensa Nacional: The highest military rank in the Mexican army - the "Secretary of Defense." The only one above him is the President of Mexico.
Confederate Officer's Insignia - Civil War Uniforms reviewed
In this episode, Andrew Roscoe provides an informative overview of insignia worn by officers in the Confederate army. Despite starting from nothing, the young Confederacy chose to not just exactly copy the United States army and there is a lot of difference in style. While you are learning, enjoy photos of original insignia and original images of officers.

A member of the Navy who serves in the enlisted ranks is called a sailor, while officers are Members of the Navy or Navy Reserve who meet the minimum educational criteria of possessing a degree from a college or university that offers a four-year program and who have completed Officer Training are eligible to become commissioned officers.
Officers have separate berthing areas from enlisted personnel which is commonly referred to as “officer country.” Officers have their private quarters in which they sleep. The life of a sailor can be difficult and taxing at times. Crew members often spend weeks or even months away from home and do not exactly lead a luxurious life while doing so. On an aircraft carrier, it is common knowledge that officers enjoy superior living conditions to those of the sailors. Why is there such a difference in the life of an officer and a sailor?

In this episode, Andrew Roscoe provides an informative overview of insignia worn by officers in the Confederate army. Despite starting from nothing, the young Confederacy chose to not just exactly copy the United States army and there is a lot of difference in style. While you are learning, enjoy photos of original insignia and original images of officers.

Why did The Confederates Lose Despite Their Big Military Victories? - The American Civil War (1862)
Both sides of the conflict had hoped for a swift and minimally damaging war. Yet, it was clear now that the end was far from near, and the Union - despite its laundry list of advantages - was struggling. The start of 1862 had scarcely seen any significant Confederate losses thus far, however, the North was coming into the new year with fresh motivation and determination…
