John Main and the Practice of Christian Meditation
One of the greatest challenges that Christianity faces today is the practical rediscovery of its age-old traditions of prayer and contemplation, and one of the principle attempts to do this in recent times was begun by the Benedictine priest John Main. Inspired by a Hindu teacher, he developed a way of Christian meditation, and the Christian Meditation movement that he founded has spread around the world. We are going to visit the World Community for Christian Meditation in London and talk to Laurence Freeman, its current director, and two of its members. Then we will visit Thomas Ryan, the director of Unitas, an ecumenical center for spirituality and Christian meditation in Montreal, in order to find out what this Christian meditation movement is all about.

A MEDITATION SESSION | With John Main, OSB
John Main, OSB, is a Benedictine monk who believes that the essence of Christian prayer is the human consciousness of Jesus worshipping God in the Spirit at the center of the human person. His way of teaching reminds us of the oral tradition in which this way of contemplative wisdom has always been transmitted. He was a teacher who wished to lead others into their own experience.
John Main said, “There is no way we can learn to meditate by reading books or by listening to talks about it. The only way to learn is by meditating. Thus, we come to understand the essence of Christianity in our own experience and in finding God in our own heart…Each time we sit down to meditate, we enter into that oneness…the oneness of God who is now, the oneness of God who is love…” (The Heart of Creation)

John Main, OSB, is a Benedictine monk who believes that the essence of Christian prayer is the human consciousness of Jesus worshipping God in the Spirit at the center of the human person.
Through his reading of the teachings of the early Christian monks, the Desert Mothers and Fathers, he discovered the Christian tradition of the mantra and went on to teach it from within the rich context of Christian scripture and theology.
He said: “I do not wish to imply that meditation is the only way, but rather that it is the only way that I have found. In my own experience it is the way of pure simplicity that enables us to become fully, integrally aware of the Spirit Jesus has sent into our heart…” (Word into Silence, p. 42)

THE WAY OF SILENCE | 08 The Hunger For Depth And Meaning | John Main, OSB
We need silence for our psychological health as well as for our spiritual growth. But the real silence is interior. In fact, even if we are in a very noisy place we can be silent if we are concentrated, which means at one with our own center. Learning to be silent at the times of meditation teaches us to “pray” at all times. It teaches us to use every delay or frustration in daily life as an opportunity, indeed a gift, to go deeper, to learn to listen, to wait in our new-found silence.
In its essence, silence is nothing less than worship in spirit and truth. So, it is not just the absence of noise. Silence is a whole attitude of being, of relating, and an openness to the mutual knowing and inter-being which is love.

This video was originally launched as a DVD (which comes with 11 subtitles and you can order contacting the resource center nearest to you). It introduces the way of Christian meditation, and the work and vision of The World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM). In four parts, and narrated by Fr Laurence Freeman OSB, the video describes the tradition of this ancient way of prayer, John Main's personal journey and re-presentation of the tradition. A teaching on how to meditate is followed by the sharing of experiences by meditators around the world who build the practice into their daily lives. An overview of WCCM describes the life of this global community that has been created by meditation, and which is vibrant in the weekly meditation groups that help newcomers to persevere on the inner journey. The "Meditation" outreach expresses the aspiration of WCCM to express its contemplative life in work for peace, justice and compassion. "Pilgrimage" would be particularly useful for viewing at introductory workshops, group gatherings, and for sharing with people who are interested in the teaching and work of the community.
These are the parts of the video:
1. An Introduction to Christian Meditation (27:10min)
A description of the tradition of this ancient way of Christian prayer, the story of John Main’s personal journey and his re-presentation of the tradition. This part introduces the Christian context of meditation.
2. The Daily Practice (20:00 min)
A teaching on how to meditate. It reminds us that learning to meditate is an ongoing work, and that faithfulness to the daily practice is a liberating spiritual experience open to all.
3. Meditation Creates Community (16:10 min)
An overview of the The World Community for Christian Meditation. It describes the life of this global community that has been created by meditation, and which is vibrant in the weekly meditation groups that help newcomers to persevere on the inner journey.
4. Meditation for the World (19:10 min)
Our new outreach MEDITATIO realises the aspiration of The World Community for Christian Meditation to express its contemplative life in work for peace, justice and compassion.
