John Hooper Harvey (25 May 1911 – 18 November 1997) was a British architectural historian, who specialised in writing on English Gothic architecture and architects. Paul Crossley has described him as "the most prolific and arguably the most influential writer on Gothic architecture in the post-war years". He made extensive use of archival sources, and is particularly remembered for having (through his study of Henry Yevele (1944) and his biographical dictionary of English Mediaeval Architects (1954)) helped dispel the myth that the architects of medieval buildings were anonymous figures of whom little could be discovered. He also published more generally on England in the later middle ages, and was a pioneer in the field of garden history.
Early life
Harvey was born in London, the only child of William Harvey (1883–1962), architect, and his wife, Alice née Wilcox (1874–1958). He was educated at St John's School, Leatherhead, after which, in 1928, he joined the architectural practice of Sir Herbert Baker. While in Baker's office he studied architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic. From 1933 to 1935 he travelled with his father in Palestine, helping survey ancient buildings. In 1936 he took a job with the Office of Works.
He burst into the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes in 1973. Rushing for 1024 yards, with an incredible 7.5 yards per rush average and 32 pass receptions, he was an all-star and won the Jeff Russel Memorial Trophy, being runner up as CFL MVP.
Like many other players lured by the big money, he jumped to the World Football League in 1974, playing 2 seasons with the Memphis Southmen. In his first season he rushed for 945 yards, caught 21 passes for 275 yards, scored 5 touchdowns, and threw 3 passes (one for a TD.) In 1975, rushing behind future NFL Hall-of-Famer Larry Csonka, he gained 137 yards, caught 8 passes for 107 yards, scored 4 TDs, and threw 2 passes (1 for a TD.) In the short history of the WFL he was 13th on the all time rushing list, with 1082 yards.
When the WFL folded, he returned to the CFL, playing 10 games for the Toronto Argonauts in 1976 (rushing for 68 yards, catching 26 passes for 459 yards, and 5 TDs) and 1 game for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1977.
Born in London, England, he began his acting career on the stage in the 1930s as one of the Harry Hanson's Court Players at the Peterborough Repertory. While there, he met the actress Diana King.
Harvey and King were married, remaining together for more than forty years, until his death.

John grew up living under the threshold of LAX, building models and riding in the back seat during his fathers pursuit of a private pilots license. As a boy in his Grand mothers backyard, John could see the oil streaks on the bottoms of the DC-4’s that were still in active service flying final approach into LAX. Many days in the summer were spent on Aviation boulevard right behind the blast deflectors on it’s south runway leaning into the jet exhaust of departing 707’s, DC-8’s and anything else the belched burnt jet-A. Maybe that’s how it got into his blood!
