Richard Andrew Palethorpe ToddOBE (11 June 1919–3 December 2009) was an Irish-born British soldier and stage and film actor.
Early life
Richard Todd was born as Richard Andrew Palethorpe-Todd in Dublin, Ireland. His father, Andrew William Palethorpe Todd, was an Irish physician and an international Irish rugby player who gained three caps for his country. Richard spent a few of his childhood years in India, where his father, a British officer, served as an army physician.
Later his family moved to Devon and Todd attended Shrewsbury School. Upon leaving school, Todd trained for a potential military career at Sandhurst before beginning his acting training at the Italia Conti Academy.
This change in career led to estrangement from his mother. When he learned at age 19 that she had committed suicide, he did not grieve long for her, he admitted in later life.
In high school, Todd led Davidson High School in Mobile, Alabama, to the state championship in football. Individually, Todd owned the state shot-put record at the time. He then went on to play for Bear Bryant at the University of Alabama, where he was a three-year starter at quarterback. During his time at Alabama, the Crimson Tide ran the wishbone offense. In his sophomore year, Todd shared the quarterback position with Gary Rutledge. In a game against Virginia Tech, which the Tide won 77-6, Todd was one of four backs who ran for over 100 yards. The 1973 season concluded in the Sugar Bowl, with a 24-23 loss to Notre Dame. In that game, Todd caught a 25-yard touchdown pass.

1975 Sugar Bowl - Alabama vs. Penn State
For the Sugar Bowl debut in the already-world-famous Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans was treated to a pair of coaches would go down in history as true legends: Alabama’s Bear Bryant and Penn State’s Joe Paterno.

Mike Stock swept into the end zone behind a ferocious block by Newsome for a 10-3 lead.
Bahr cut the margin to 10-6 with a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, but Ridgeway answered with a 28-yarder.
With 3:19 left, Penn State got one last chance. The Nittany Lions inched out to their 39, where, on fourth-and-one, they went for it. Alabama held with 1:15 to go, and Bear Bryant had his first bowl victory since 1967.
Todd, with his bandaged throwing hand, completed 10 of his 12 passes for 210 yards and in the process probably prevented a Nittany Lions victory.
