John Ford directly influenced Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Sergio Leone, David Fincher, Quentin Tarantino and a thousand others.
A word about his political leanings:
"I am a liberal Democrat and a rebel. [on Native American Indians] We've treated them badly, it's a blot on our shield; we've robbed, cheated, murdered and massacred them, but they kill one white man and God, out come the troops." - John Ford (1967)
Also please watch Young Mr. Lincoln and The Sun Shines Bright to know more about his political and moral ideologies.
My favorite John Ford film is Stagecoach (1939). Every technique mentioned in this video is in that one film.

JOHN FORD: Hollywood's First Great Author
"I'm John Ford and I do westerns," he used to say. Although he directed many excellent Western films, he transcended all labels to become a great filmmaker on its own. His career goes from the beginnings of cinema to the 60s, where he took the opportunity to tell a mythical version of the history of the United States. Thanks to him, John Wayne became who he is, and today he is admired by masters such as Orson Welles, Jean-Luc Godard, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese.

John Carpenter Bashes John Ford and the Direction of Stagecoach
Legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter bashes John Ford and the Direction of Stagecoach in this short video.
John Ford is frequently cited as one of the masters of American filmmaking, but in this interview with Mick Garris, John Carpenter expressed his quibbles with The Searchers, The Quiet Man and Stagecoach.
Garris asked Carpenter who some one of major influences were when he started out, and he mentioned Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock, Roman Polanski and Orson Welles, before speaking of John Ford.
Although Carpenter still loves The Grapes of Wrath to this day, he was particularly unimpressed with Ford's direction of the stagecoach scenes in the classic 1939 western, Stagecoach.

This stirring documentary was directed & produced by four time Oscar winner John Ford during the intense June 4th Japanese carrier plane attacks on Midway Island and by Navy Combat Cameramen aboard the USS Yorktown during the epic carrier battle, along with color gun camera film of air to air and air to sea combat.. Highlights include memorable scenes from the Marine Base on Midway, airfield B-17s leaving to attack the Japanese fleet, patrolling PBYs,. action packed Japanese attacks on the Yorktown and Midway, and up close shots of the Yorktown's squadron VF3 and their F4F Wild Cats, including aces John S. "Jimmy' Thach ("The Thach Weave") and Lt. E. Scott McCuskey. And it wouldn't be a John Ford movie without some of the most vivid combat cinematography you have ever seen, a touching and dramatic score by nine time Oscar winner Alfred Newman, and some folksy narration by Henry Fonda. Like many World War II period pictures, the facts presented in "The battle of Midway" are not always historically accurate, but there is no denying that these are some of the most powerful images we have of this epic battle, a turning point in World War II. The America people needed a shot in the arm after Pearl Harbor and '"The Battle of Midway" supplied it in spades!
The surviving copies of this film have severe color shifts. I did a scene-by-scene digital image restoration.
