Born near Nashville, Tennessee on March 17, 1798, he went to Center College in Danville, Kentucky. He moved to Louisiana and became a planter residing at Wyoming Plantation; he was also interested in the newspaper business. He married Margaret Johnson and together they had four children. His daughter Anna Ruffin Dawson married Robert C. Wickliffe who would serve as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Louisiana in the 1850s.
He ran for Governor of the state, unsuccessfully, in 1834, being defeated by Whig candidate Edward D. White.
He was elected as a Democrat representing the Second District to the 27th, and representing the Third District in the 28th Congress; he served from March 4, 1841, until his death on June 26, 1845. He defeated James M. Elam (Whig) in the election of 1843.
Bennett, a left-footed forward from East Brighton, first broke into the St Kilda team in the 1980 VFL season. He made two appearances that year, in rounds six and ten, then injured his ankle and missed the rest of the season. In 1981 he played 12 league games, with his best performance coming against South Melbourne at Waverley Park, where he had 23 disposals and kicked six goals. In 1982 and 1983, he played just four games in total, also appearing for Sandringham in the latter year.
In 1984, Bennett played for Footscray, but was only picked for three senior games, despite good performances in the reserves.
He returned to St Kilda in 1985 and made a career high 16 appearances that season. His 25 goals were enough for him to finish second in the St Kilda goal-kicking, behind Tony Lockett.
During the 1986 season, Bennett went back to Sandringham and played there for the rest of the decade, kicking over 200 goals. He topped Sandringham's goal-kicking in 1987 and 1988.

Writing and publishing
As well as steadily producing and distributing his own work, Bennett, through "Luna Bisonte Prods", a small press founded in 1974, has published thousands of limited edition items by writers who compose visual poetry, word art, and other experimental fiction/art/poetry. Bennett's papers, and published works, as well as the results of his own publishing activities (including 30 years of "Lost & Found Times" magazine), are collected in several major institutions, including Washington University in St. Louis, SUNY Buffalo, The Ohio State University and The Museum of Modern Art.
Bennett himself is the curator of the "Avant Writing Collection", "The William S. Burroughs Collection", and "The Cervantes Collection" at the Ohio State University Libraries. More information about Bennett's career, publishing activities and artistic endeavors can be found at his website.
The Bridge Murder case, also known as the Bridge Table Murder case was the trial of Myrtle Adkins Bennett (born March 20, 1895, in Tillar, Arkansas), a Kansas City housewife, for the murder of her husband John G. Bennett over a game of contract bridge in September 1929.
Murder
Myrtle and John spent much of Sunday, September 29, 1929, with their upstairs neighbors, Charles and Myrna Hofman. The husbands played a round of golf at the Indian Hills Country Club that morning, and then went back to the links that afternoon with their wives joining them. At dusk, they returned to the Bennett apartment at 902 Ward Parkway in the Country Club District of Kansas City. After sharing dinner, they sat down to a game of bridge in the Bennett living room, the couples playing as partners, the Hofmans versus the Bennetts. After midnight, as the Hofmans began to pull ahead, the Bennetts began to bicker. In the ultimate hand, John failed to make his four spades contract and Myrtle, frustrated by the failure, called him “a bum bridge player.” He stood and slapped her in the face several times, and announced he was leaving. He said he would spend the night in a motel in Saint Joseph, Missouri. As he packed his bag, and moved from room to room, he mocked his wife. Myrtle told the Hofmans, "Only a cur would strike a woman in front of guests."
