John Alden Carpenter (Symphony No. 1)
Carpenter's Symphony No. 1 (1940) was based on an earlier first symphony subtitled "Sermons in Stones" (1916). Technically a single-movement work, the overhauled version of the symphony can be divided into five connected sections.
And what's this? Listen to the Largo (fifth section) at about 15:10. You will hear a familiar tune that is very much a part of our current film culture. I think Mr. Carpenter should get some credit for this.
Performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine
Conducted by the always awesome John McLaughlin Williams

John Alden and the Long History of Plymouth Colony
Most historians equate Plymouth Colony only with the Mayflower crossing and the First Thanksgiving, but the Colony has more of a story to tell. Join historian John Turner as he explores Plymouth Colony's fascinating 70-year history and what we can learn from John Alden, a magistrate for over 60 years, about the Colony's religious, political and social order. John is author of the book "They Knew They Were Pilgrims, Plymouth Colony and the Contest for American Liberty."

John Alden’s Choice: A Historical Re-enactment of Love, War & Anglo-American Friendship
Take a journey back to 1920 and the 300th anniversary of the Mayflower to explore England’s grand historical pageant "John Alden’s Choice." Performed on the quays of Southampton with several hundred actors, this re-enactment told the story of not just Alden and his romance with Priscilla but the history of America and its bond with Great Britain, in the shadow of the Great War.
The talk is presented by Dr. Tom Hulme,, a senior lecturer in Modern British history at Queen’s University in Belfast. Dr. Hulme has written widely about how Britons in the 19th and 20th centuries connected with their local and national past, from large-scale historical re-enactments and city commemorations to the building of monuments and memorials. Thanksgiving, Longfellow's Christmas Bells, John Alden's 5th Great Grandson and the Civil War
One of my favorite Christmas songs has lyrics written by an American poet and direct descendant of several Mayflower Passengers, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This was written during the American Civil War. Longfellow's Mayflower ancestors were John Alden, Priscilla and William Mullins, Richard Warren, WIlliam and Mary Brewster, and Henry Samson.
Note: President Lincoln issued a proclamation to make Thanksgiving a US a holiday in 1863, and again in 1864, but it didn't become an official legal holiday until December, 1941, under FDR.
