John Alden (c.1599–1687) was a crew member on the historic 1620 voyage of the Pilgrim ship Mayflower. Rather than return to England with the ship, he stayed at what became Plymouth Colony. He was hired in Southampton, England, as the ship's cooper, responsible for maintaining the ship's barrels. He was a signatory to the Mayflower Compact. He married fellow Mayflower passenger Priscilla Mullins, whose entire family perished in the first winter.
He served in a number of important government positions such as Assistant Governor, Duxbury Deputy to the General Court of Plymouth, Captain Myles Standish's Duxbury militia company, a member of the Council of War, Treasurer of Plymouth Colony, and Commissioner to Yarmouth.
English origins
His origins are largely subject to speculation, but it is currently believed that he was from the Alden family of Harwich in Essex, England. Harwich is an ancient North Sea port, northeast of London, which was the homeport of the Pilgrim ship Mayflower and home of its captain, Christopher Jones. The Alden family of Harwich had distant connections to Jones, residing there in the 17th century and possibly related to him by marriage. The only certainty about his English background were Bradford's words that Alden “was hired for a cooper, (barrel maker) at Southampton, where the ship victuled; and being a hopeful young man, was much desired, but left to his liking to go or stay when he came here; but he stayed, and maryed here.” Author Charles Banks states that the employment of Alden “at Southampton” does not necessarily mean that he was a resident of the seaport and may have only been there to work temporarily when the Mayflower arrived. Banks notes a young John Alden about the same age as the Mayflower passenger was a seafarer in Harwich in the early 17th century.
In May 1982, one of Alden's three daughters, 14-year-old Denise, was found fatally shot in his law office, later ruled a suicide. Her death was ultimately ruled accidental. He did not seek re-election to the House that year, and was succeeded by fellow Republican Bob Flick. John moved to San Diego, California. where he began many small businesses. He never returned to his passion of public service prior to his death from colon cancer. He left behind 2 daughters: Jennifer (1973) and Jaclyn (1979–2009).
Captain John Alden, Jr. (ca. 1626 or 1627 – March 25, 1702 [O.S. March 14, 1701]) was a 17th-century American soldier and sailor. He was a well-known public figure in his time but is now chiefly remembered as a survivor of the Salem witch trials, of which he wrote a much quoted account.
Personal life
John Alden, Jr. was the son of John Alden, Sr. and Priscilla Alden (née Mullins), who settled in Plymouth Colony (present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts) in 1620, arriving on the Pilgrim ship Mayflower. He was born in Plymouth in about 1626 or 1627. He and his older sister Elizabeth are listed in the records of the division of cattle among the residents of Plymouth, which occurred on June 1, 1627 [O.S. May 22, 1627].
John Alden, born Gordon Henry Buchanan (19 January 1908 – 10 November 1962) was an Australian theatrical actor and director noted for his interpretation of Shakespeare.
He was born and grew up in Taree, New South Wales and studied to be a teacher in Sydney. In 1934 he joined Doris Fitton's Independent Theatre, and in 1937 retired from teaching to concentrate on acting. He played with Independent in most of their productions at the Savoy Theatre or their own hall at 360 Miller Street, Sydney then as producer or assistant to Doris Fitton.
He spent three years working in England, including some performances at the Old Vic. From 1943 he directed Shakespeare productions at the Theatre Royal for J. C. Williamson's Austral-American Productions. He then took a group to Japan to entertain the Occupation Forces. On his return, he acted in or produced several plays at the Independent Theatre, including a 1959 production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" </Ref: Berry Dunston, who as Berenice Adams was a member of the cast who played Moth and was understudy for the role of Titania >.
John Gale Alden (1884–1962) was an American naval architect and the founder of Alden Designs.
Alden was born in Troy in 1884, one of eight children, only four of whom survived. He grew up in Rhode Island and first learned about boats when sailing a flat-bottomed rowing boat of his sister's using an umbrella as a sail. He was inspired by the local fisherman and regattas; When his family moved to Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1900 the Grand Banks fishing schooners which were docked there inspired his later designs. A compulsive doodler, as a child he made countless sketches of the boats that were later to make him famous.
When he was 18 years old his father died and he made the decision to train as a naval architect. He took courses at MIT and apprenticed with prominent naval architects Starling Burgess and Bowdoin B. Crowninshield.
In the winter of 1907, he undertook a voyage that would define his distinctive design trademark: The schooner Fame, owned by the eastern Fishing company, had to be returned to Boston when her crew of 23 men had gone down with smallpox and there was no one left to sail her. Alden put together a crew of four inexperienced young men and one old salt to undertake the journey. During the weeks that followed, they experienced appalling winter weather - 60 mile an hour winds, turning the salt spray to ice. The boat, and the crew, were man enough for the job, but for Alden the lessons learned far outweighed the value of the delivery contract: He realized how to design a boat that would be resilient in heavy seas, and what was important when a vessel was short-handed. His subsequent designs are admired not only for their grace and elegance but for their stability and for the fact that they can, generally, be sailed single-handedly if necessary.
"We do not have unlimited capital. If we cannot make the new library sustainable for future generations we are providing a maintenance timebomb."
"I am delighted that we have found money for the refurbishment of many of our leisure facilities, including Wyndley Swimming Pool, one of the busiest in the region."
"It's like a major sporting event you're competing in. You're prepared and you know you're the best you can be, but you never know until it's all played out."
"Birmingham is participating in a national programme of commemorations to mark the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar in October."
"We used to see a very large growth in our ground business,"
"It is now more significant in the air business which requires us to lease planes for a short period of time to meet a significant spike in our air business."

John Alden Carpenter (Symphony No. 1)
Carpenter's Symphony No. 1 (1940) was based on an earlier first symphony subtitled "Sermons in Stones" (1916). Technically a single-movement work, the overhauled version of the symphony can be divided into five connected sections.
And what's this? Listen to the Largo (fifth section) at about 15:10. You will hear a familiar tune that is very much a part of our current film culture. I think Mr. Carpenter should get some credit for this.
