Robert George "Joe" Meek (5 April 1929 – 3 February 1967) was an English record producer and songwriter who pioneered experimental pop music. His best-remembered hit is the Tornados' "Telstar" (1962), which became the first record by a British group to reach number one in the US Hot 100. It also spent five weeks at number one the UK singles chart, with Meek receiving an Ivor Novello Award for this production as the "Best-Selling A-Side" of 1962.
Meek also produced music for films such as Live It Up! (US title Sing and Swing, 1963), a pop music film which featured Gene Vincent, the Outlaws pop group, jazz musician Kenny Ball and others. Meek wrote most of the songs and incidental music, much of which was recorded by the Saints and which Meek produced.
Meek played non League football at Newcastle Co–Op and Seaton Delaval before having an unsuccessful trial at Liverpool in 1927. Meek an inside right had spells at Stockton and Middlesbrough. In 1930 he joined Gateshead where he featured in 135 matches and netted 50 goals. After playing for Bradford Park Avenue, Meek signed for Tottenham Hotspur. Between 1935–38 he played a total 51 matches and scored on 16 occasions in all competitions for the Spurs. Meek ended his career at Swansea.
Meekness is a possible attribute of human nature and behavior. It has been defined several ways: righteous, humble, teachable, and patient under suffering, long suffering willing to follow gospel teachings; an attribute of a true disciple.
Meekness has been contrasted with humility as referring to behaviour towards others, where humbleness refers to an attitude towards oneself - meekness meaning restraining one's own power, so as to allow room for others.
Christianity
The Israelite Apostle Paul gave an example of meek behavior when writing to Timothy: "The servant of the Lord must be gentle, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose." (2 Tim. 2:24–25)
Sir Thomas Browne explained: "Meekness takes injuries like pills, not chewing, but swallowing them down." This indicates that meekness allows a person to overlook or forgive perceived insults or offenses.
Meek started putting up street art in early 2003 and enjoys the irony of his name in a subject area that is all about bragging and boasting.
He lived in London for some time and was exposed to the work of Banksy. As well as stenciling prolifically, Meek has also hijacked billboards, and used wheat paste and stickers.
The book Stencil Graffiti Capital devotes a chapter to Meek. Other books that display his works are Stencil Pirates by Josh McPhee,Conform by Saskia Folk and Street art uncut by Matthew Lunn.
Meek also appears in feature documentary RASH 2005, a film which explores the cultural value of street art in Melbourne, Australia.
His work has been exhibited in:
Melbourne Stencil Festival, 2005

Joe Meek was a groundbreaking British record producer who worked from his home studio at 304 Holloway Road, London, and created number 1 hits such as 'Johnny Remember Me', 'Telstar', and 'Have I The Right (To Hold You)' before his tragic death on February 3rd, 1967.
He worked with The Tornadoes, Screaming Lord Sutch, John Leyton, Heinz Burt, The Honeycombs, Chas Hodges of Chas & Dave fame and many more. It all went horribly wrong on February 3rd, 1967 (the 8th Anniversary of Buddy Holly's death) when he was accused of shooting his landlady, Violey Shendon, to death and then turning the shotgun on himself. Joe Meek’s Tea Chest Tapes
Cherry Red Records have acquired legendary producer Joe Meek’s ‘Tea Chest Tapes’ – a near mythical collection of almost 2,000 reels that contain a vast amount of the producer’s work.
In the early 60s, Meek had a string of UK No 1s, including Telstar, which was the first song by a British artist to top the US charts. Meek pioneered numerous recording techniques in his studio flat (304 Holloway Road in North London). Following Meek’s death in 1967 the tapes passed on to Cliff Cooper, who worked with the producer when playing bass with the Millionaires and went on to found Orange Amplification.
The fabled quarter-inch tapes got their name because they were contained and sold in 67 tea chests. Amongst the recordings are previously unheard songs by David Bowie’s first band The Konrads, re...

Telstar: The Joe Meek Story (Trailer)
Set against the backdrop of hedonistic, swinging, early '60s London, Telstar shares the stranger-than-fiction true story of Joe Meek (Tony Award-winner Con O'Neill, who originated the role on London stage). An enormously talented but quirky maverick, Meek revolutionized British pop, enjoying enormous success early on with the biggest selling record of its time, Telstar, the first U.K. album to hit #1 on American charts. But the flamboyant, tone-deaf songwriter was also a deeply troubled soul -- dabbling in the occult and addicted to amphetamines -- and his decline was as meteoric and spectacular as his rise. Also starring two-time Academy Award-winner Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) and Pam Ferris (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and featuring an original sou...

The fabled quarter-inch tapes got their name because they were contained and sold in 67 tea chests. Amongst the recordings are previously unheard songs by David Bowie’s first band The Konrads, recordings by Billy Fury, several songs by Tom Jones, and unheard material from The Honeycombs, Heinz and John Leyton (who had a UK No 1 with Meek). Also included are mastered recordings of Mike Berry, Glenda Collins, Michael Cox, The Cryin' Shames, The Outlaws, Screaming Lord Sutch and The Tornados - recordings which have languished in the vaults for five decades and should finally now see the light of day.
Further the tea chests contain demo recordings of (among others) Ray Davies, (who wrote some songs for The Honeycombs), Georgie Fame, Jonathan King, Alvin Lee, Gene Vincent, Rod Stewart, Steve Marriott and an early line-up of the band who became Status Quo. Finally it is said that there is also a demo tape of a certain Mark Feld, who later found fame under the name Marc Bolan with his band T. Rex.
Cherry Red plan to work closely with Alan Wilson at Western Star on the tape digitization and mastering side, as well as Pete Rochford and the Joe Meek Society to bring these amazing sounds to an audience who have been waiting patiently for many years.
