"Cumberland Gap" is an Appalachian folk song that likely dates to the latter half of the 19th century and was first recorded in 1924. The song is typically played on banjo or fiddle, and well-known versions of the song include instrumental versions as well as versions with lyrics. A version of the song appeared in the 1934 book, American Ballads and Folk Songs, by folk song collector John Lomax. Woody Guthrie recorded a version of the song at his Folkways sessions in the mid-1940s, and the song saw a resurgence in popularity with the rise of bluegrass and the American folk music revival in the 1950s. In 1957, the British musician Lonnie Donegan had a No. 1 UK hit with a skiffle version of "Cumberland Gap".
Famous in American colonial history for its role as a key passageway through the lower central Appalachians, it was an important part of the Wilderness Road and is now part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
Long used by Native Americans, the Cumberland Gap was brought to the attention of settlers in 1750 by Dr. Thomas Walker, a Virginia physician and explorer. The path was explored by a team of frontiersmen led by Daniel Boone, making it accessible to pioneers who used it to journey into the western frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee.
The A74, also known historically as the Glasgow to Carlisle Road, was a major road in the United Kingdom, linking Glasgow in Scotland to Carlisle in the North West of England, passing through Clydesdale, Annandale and the Southern Uplands. A road in this area has existed since Roman Britain, and it was considered one of the most important roads in Scotland, being used as a regular mail service route.
The road received a substantial upgrade in the early 19th century under the direction of Thomas Telford, who made significant engineering improvements, including a new route over the Beattock Summit and the Metal Bridge just in England just south of the border. Engineering improvements continued throughout the century and into the 20th, and it became one of the first trunk roads in Britain in 1936.
From the 1960s the road started to be replaced by a parallel motorway. The last remaining section of all-purpose road on Telford's original alignment, the so-called "Cumberland Gap" between Carlisle and Metal Bridge, was replaced by a motorway in 2008 after years of delays due to a breakdown in discussions between the English and Scottish parliaments.
The first record of the term "Cumberland" appears in 945, when the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recorded that the area was ceded to Malcolm I of Scotland by King Edmund of England. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 most of the future county remained part of Scotland although some villages in the ancient district of Millom, which were the possessions of the Earl of Northumbria, were included in the Yorkshire section with the Furness region.
In 1092 King William Rufus of England invaded the Carlisle district, settling it with colonists. He created an Earldom of Carlisle, and granted the territory to Ranulf Meschyn. In 1133 Carlisle was made the see of a new diocese, identical with the area of the earldom. However, on the death of King Henry I in 1135, the area was regained by Scotland's King David I. He was able to consolidate his power and made Carlisle one of his chief seats of government, while England descended into a lengthy civil war. In 1157 Henry II of England resumed possession of the area from Malcolm IV of Scotland, and formed two new counties from the former earldom: Westmorland and "Carliol". The silver-mining area of Alston, previously associated with the Liberty of Durham, was also added to the new county of Carliol for financial reasons. By 1177 the county of Carliol was known as Cumberland. The border between England and Scotland was made permanent by the Treaty of York in 1237.
Cumberland is a provincialelectoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. It is the largest electoral district in the province, and at the 2007 general election was the safest for the New Democratic Party. It has elected a member of the NDP (and its predecessor the CCF) since 1952.
Cumberland is a residential neighbourhood in the Palisades area of north west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

In this weeks episode we'll be starting the process of working our way round the motorways across the mightily fine Scotland. There's much to discuss, such as neighbourhood gang warfare, old steelworks, viaducts and old junction designs. Thrilling.

Driving Through Scotland at Break-Neck Speeds: Is the A74 Still Possible?
Not long ago, the A74 Dual Carriageway was replaced by the 3-lane M74 Motorway from the England - Scotland border to meet up with the existing bit of 2-lane motorway South of Glasgow.
You may remember the fast but dangerous old road up to Glasgow, but did you know that you can still drive most of it?
We go in search of the A74 as it was, and to get you there in record time, we travel at 5x speed in super smooth Hyperlapse.
On the way, I highlight many points of interest with captions, my now standard stop-sign feature, and inset photos, to give you more information about what's still there from the old road.
It was a mainly wet drive South at the end of February 2022, so maybe I should do a drive North in better weather.

The M74 is a motorway that runs to Glasgow in Scotland... No, I'd not heard of it either, apparently there's a whole other country attached to the North of England... who knew.
In this weeks episode we'll be starting the process of working our way round the motorways across the mightily fine Scotland. There's much to discuss, such as neighbourhood gang warfare, old steelworks, viaducts and old junction designs. Thrilling.
In this series we aim to explore what our motorway network is hiding. As we drive along at 70mph..ish...we simply just wouldn't be aware of what we're missing. This series aims to uncover some of the hidden secrets our motorways have to offer.
This video is the full trip from our hotel in Glasgow to the outskirts of Carlisle, incorporating the M74, the A74 and the 'secret' road beside the M6 to Carlisle.

On the same trip, we drove down the 'secret' road beside the M6 to Carlisle, then on the A66 to Scotch Corner, both of which I will post as separate videos - I was going to post the whole trip as one, but realised is was huge at 20gb, and it would be better to let people choose which parts of the trip they want to watch without wading through 45 minutes of footage!
