Joan Agnes Theresa Sadie Brodel (January 26, 1925–October 12, 2015), known by her stage name Joan Leslie, was an American actress, dancer, and vaudevillian who, during the Hollywood Golden Age, appeared in such films as High Sierra, Sergeant York, and Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Early life
Joan Agnes Theresa Sadie Brodel was born on January 26, 1925 in Highland Park, Michigan, she was the youngest child of John and Agnes Brodel. John was a bank clerk and Agnes was a pianist.
Leslie's two older sisters, Betty and Mary Brodel, shared their mother's musical interest and started to learn how to play instruments at an early age, such as the saxophone and the banjo. They began performing in front of audiences in acts that included singing and dancing. Leslie joined the duo at two-and-a-half years old. She was soon able to play the accordion.
The Great Depression caused financial difficulties for the family in the mid-1930s, with her father losing his job. As a result, the three sisters entered show business as vaudeville performers to support the family. They began touring in Canada and the United States. Collectively, they were known as The Three Brodels. As an attempt to bypass child labor laws at the time, both Mary and Joan pretended to be older than they were. When Leslie was nine, she told child labor investigators that she was 16 years old. Of the three sisters, Joan proved to be a scene-stealer because of her impersonations of figures such as Katharine Hepburn, Maurice Chevalier, and Jimmy Durante. Coming from a family of Irish ancestry, Leslie was raised as a Roman Catholic and attended Catholic schools in Detroit, Toronto, and Montreal.

JOAN LESLIE: NORTHWEST STAMPEDE (1948)
[PLEASE READ] Cute, capable, and crafty in Calgary, Canada—that's charismatic Joan Leslie as beautiful ranch foreman and rodeo competitor "Christine 'Honey' Johnson" in NORTHWEST STAMPEDE (1948). "And, truth to tell, she lights up well" in her first starring role in a color Western movie and only her second screen appearance after her principled revolt against and departure from Warner Bros.
This is the complete movie—full of charm, beauty, conflict, and spirited action in the great Canadian outdoors.
Strapping James Craig plays the restless hero; Jack Oakie and Chill Wills lend their inimitable talents to comedic, but caring supporting roles; an elusive white stallion ("Blizzard") and resourceful German Shepherd mix ("Flame the Wonder Dog") also feature prominently.

Fred Astaire & Joan Leslie 1943
From the movie: THE SKY'S THE LIMIT 1943
We tend to only think of Fred Astaire only dancing with Ginger Rogers, but he did fact dance with several good and in some cases great dancers. Here he dances with 18 year old Joan Leslie who sadly passed away about a year ago at the age of 90. Joan was one of those actresses about whom it was said that she was as nice off screen as she was on.

In my opinion, no other actress in Hollywood history could better project high self-esteem than Miss Joan Leslie. I submit as evidence her performance in this movie--just one eloquent example among many in her career. I upload this video in her honor.
Paul Sawtell—one of the great composers/music supervisors for many successful American television series of the 1950s and 1960s [e.g. HAWAIIAN EYE; VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA]—supplied the pretty and evocative original soundtrack for this film.
NOTE: I think it is fair to say NORTHWEST STAMPEDE is a "forgotten classic"—in no small part because its distribution has never been associated with a major film or television studio. I consider this YouTube upload one way to redress this movie's unfortunate neglect, hoping that greater visibility online will ultimately lead to public and/or professional demand for its digital restoration (and subsequent distribution). If you are either contemplating or actively involved with such a project, please contact me.
IMPORTANT: This is a video sampler of goodwill and great admiration. If you are a professional and want credit I've neglected to give OR prefer that I delete this video, please let me know. Thank you.

A full moon tide sweeps in to wash the sand to white a fairytale keeps a child wide eyed at night a golden band could bring such happiness a dream of you and me or a heaven for times of loneliness. Won't you take my hand at the picture show I love to sit with you and Let the River Flow Let the River Flow. I hear a church bell ring there's people searchin' for the Holy Ghost but now our daily bread gets delivered like the morning post Rock of Ages pass they pass like ships that dance by in the night this dream keeps haunting me only to get shattered by the first morning light. Won't you take my hand at the picture show I love to sit with you and Let the River Flow Let the River Flow. Well it makes no sense to me so close yet so far apart a sailor lost at sea with the promise from his lover's heart can't stop this circle of fear I'm like a priest whose confessing alone at the end of the street a dark man appears and cuts me right through to the bone. Won't you take my hand at the picture show so good to sit with you and Let the River Flow
