Jonathan David Samuel "Jo" Jones (October 7, 1911 – September 3, 1985) was an Americanjazzdrummer. A band leader and pioneer in jazz percussion, Jones anchored the Count Basie Orchestra rhythm section from 1934 to 1948. He was sometimes known as Papa Jo Jones to distinguish him from younger drummer Philly Joe Jones
Biography
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Jones moved to Alabama, where he learned to play several instruments, including saxophone, piano, and drums. He worked as a drummer and tap-dancer at carnival shows until joining Walter Page's band, the Blue Devils in Oklahoma City in the late 1920s. He recorded with trumpeter Lloyd Hunter's Serenaders in 1931, and later joined pianist Count Basie's band in 1934. Jones, Basie, guitarist Freddie Green and bassist Walter Page were sometimes billed as an "All-American Rhythm section," an ideal team. Jones took a brief break for two years when he was in the military, but he remained with Basie until 1948. He participated in the Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series.
Count Basie at Newport is a live album by jazz musician Count Basieand his orchestra. It was originally issued as Verve MGV 8243 and included only the tracks 1-8 and 13. Tracks 9-12 originally included in Count Basie & Joe Williams/Dizzy Gillespie & Mary Lou Williams at Newport (Verve MGV 8244).
Reception
The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album five stars and said that "At the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, the music was consistently inspired and often historic. Count Basie welcomed back tenor great Lester Young and singer Jimmy Rushing for part of a very memorable set...Young plays beautifully throughout and Rushing is in prime form. An exciting full-length version of "One O'Clock Jump" features Young, Illinois Jacquet, and trumpeter Roy Eldridge...It's a great set of music".
Tracks 2-5 originally issued on Miles and Monk at Newport;
tracks 6 and 7 originally issued on Newport Jazz Festival Live;
John Coltrane appears courtesy of Prestige Records.
Newport (formerly known as Pavonia – Newport, Pavonia, or Erie) is a PATH station located on Town Square Place (formerly Pavonia Avenue) at the corner of Washington Boulevard in Newport, Jersey City, New Jersey.
History
The station was opened on August 2, 1909 as part of the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad (H&M), originally constructed to connect to the Erie Railroad's Pavonia Terminal. The capitals of the station's columns are adorned with the "E", and recall its original name, Erie. After the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey 1960s takeover of the system, the station was renamed Pavonia, or Pavonia Avenue, itself named for the 17th New Netherland settlement of Pavonia. In 1988, the station became known as Pavonia/Newport to reflect the re-development of the former railyards along the banks of the Hudson River to residential, retail, and recreational uses as Newport. In 2010, the name became Newport.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.78km2), all land.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,506 people, 666 households, and 402 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,604.8 people per square mile (1,762.0/km²). There were 743 housing units at an average density of 2,271.8 per square mile (869.3/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.54% White, 0.13% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.27% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66% of the population.
The video was directed by the London-based filmmaker M-J Delaney, and featured London-based actors Alex Warren and Terema Wainwright, rapping and singing respectively. The lyrics were written by Tom Williams, Leo Sloley and M-J Delaney.
Published on the web on 20July2010, the video went viral and was featured by BBC News. By the middle of August2010, nearly 2.5 million people had watched it on YouTube. YouTube removed the video on 10August due to a copyright claim by music publishersEMI Music Publishing.
The lack of a fair dealing exclusion for parody works, exercised by EMI in their takedown notice, was cited in the Hargreaves Review on Copyright, commissioned by the Newport-based Intellectual Property Office. The review evolved into the Copyright (Public Administration) Regulations 2014.
Jo Jones is one of the greatest drummer in the history of Jazz. Most inventive, he frequently improvises the most unpredictable and bold breaks with an impressive rythmic energy. This example of his drum solo shows his amazing and unique variety.

Welcome to MUSIC CIRCLE
Jonathan David Samuel Jones (October 7, 1911 – September 3, 1985) was an American jazz drummer. A band leader and pioneer in jazz percussion, Jones anchored the Count Basie Orchestra rhythm section from 1934 to 1948. He was sometimes known as Papa Jo Jones to distinguish him from younger drummer Philly Joe Jones.
He is generally held to be the most important drummer of his time, mainly because he caused the transition, or at the very least was instrumental in it, when the art of drumming moved from ‘Ragtime’ music to what we now know as jazz – and drumming changed. He became known as ‘Papa’ Jo Jones to avoid confusion with ‘Philly’ Joe Jones who was a dozen years younger but eventually working at the same time.
Ragtime was a genre of drumming which appeared at the turn of the 20th century, and it was closely associated with a style of entertainment called ‘Vaudeville’. Vaudeville music was often played by one guy with drumsticks on a bass drum and a snare drum and this was called ‘double drumming’. There was of course a place for one guy playing the bass drum and another playing the snare but, the advent of the bass pedal in 1909 and the influence of the great depression would put paid to all of that. Just one guy now took care of all the associated percussion sounds (tuned or otherwise) in the band which in those days was frequently more grandly called an Orchestra .
Jo Jones wasn’t just a drummer, he could turn his hand to piano, trumpet and saxophone. By the time he joined the Count Basie Orchestra in 1934, the centre of jazz had moved from New Orleans to Chicago, and mainly due to the influence of Jo Jones, the whole style of playing the music had changed. He shifted the drummer’s role from that of a strict-tempo timekeeper to that of an interactive member of an improvising group.

Jo Jones is one of the greatest drummer in the history of Jazz. Most inventive, he frequently improvises the most unpredictable and bold breaks with an impressive rythmic energy. This example of his drum solo shows his amazing and unique variety.
The extraordinary solo of Jo Jones, a magician on drums, ends in a blaze of spectacular glory the film "l'Aventure du Jazz." This film will be showed again in France in 2012 by its director Louis Panassié to commemorate the centenary of Hugues Panassié's birth in 1912 and also the foundation of the "Hot Club de France " 80 years ago with the collaboration of Charles Delaunay and Pierre Nourry.
A showing is already expected in December 2012 in Paris by the current Hot Club president François Desbrosses. More showings are being organized in several french towns.
Soon you will see "l'Aventure du Jazz" in Lattes (near Montpellier ) on Friday, March 9 in the Jacques Coeur theater.
Bonjour: you will find more information about this film on my website
http://sites.google.com/site/louispanassie and also others subjects i have tackled in my long and adventurous life which started in 1956 with the first African tour on a Harley Davidson.
As you may understand, I have lived and filmed rare and most unforgettable historical moments.
Please contact me by mail [email protected]
So long.
