After serving two terms in the New Hampshire Senate, Shaheen was elected governor in 1996. She was re-elected in 1998 and 2000. Instead of seeking a fourth term as governor, she opted to run for the United States Senate in 2002, losing to RepublicanJohn E. Sununu. She then served as director of the Harvard Institute of Politics, before resigning to run for the U.S. Senate again in the 2008 election, defeating Sununu in a rematch. Shaheen became the first Democratic senator from New Hampshire since John A. Durkin, who was defeated in 1980. In 2014, Shaheen became only the second Democrat from New Hampshire to be re-elected to the U.S. Senate, and the first since Thomas J. McIntyre in 1972.
"[Jeanne Shaheen, governor 1997-2003, noted,] Anyone who has spent time in New Hampshire has an emotional tie to the state ... but what I appreciated when I was governor was the people, and I believe they are what made a difference in getting the peace treaty negotiations done. ... It's been the people — their independence, self-reliance and imagination. It's all possible in New Hampshire."
"We will never go back to an unfair system of unequal schools, ... We can do it and we will do it."
"You can't replace these guys. You can't overstate what they mean to the party, politically and policy-wise."
"Democrats in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Washington, Ohio, Missouri and Florida plan to hold press conferences over the next several days to highlight the importance of a substantive discussion on issues affecting all Americans -- national security, homeland security and veterans' issues; education; environment and energy policies; the economy; health care; and equal opportunity for all."
"There is no better way to honor Dr. King than to spend Monday giving back to our communities in his memory. He encouraged us to work together to build better, stronger and more united communities and he showed us that we can make a difference,"
"Well, we think the convention is a great opportunity for people to learn more about John Kerry and John Edwards,"
"And, you know, we're looking at some broad themes for the convention, stronger at home, respected in the world, and looking at -- at how John Kerry's career and life experiences play into those themes."
"What we really need to do is move this process back, ... As much as we all support diversity . . . the more states in a window, the more it will contribute to the frontloading of the process."
"We should be working together with Iowa as we have in the past to protect the status and relevance of the first-in-the-nation caucus and the first-in-the-nation primary,"
"They've added this whole different aspect -- what we call the technological twist. They are making use of the technology that is available to this generation and see that as a way to be political."
