Jean Tinguely’s Fire at MoMA | Lost Art
In March 1960 Jean Tinguely presented his first auto-destructive artwork Homage to New York in the sculpture garden at MoMA.
The sculpture was engineered to slowly erupt into flames and disintegrate before the audience.
In this film we hear from writer and critic Dore Ashton who was present on the night and witnessed the artwork partially disappear.
Not all of the artwork was destroyed and the surviving remnants of Homage to New York are now part of the collection at MoMA.
The Gallery of Lost Art was an online exhibition that told the stories of vanished artworks. Whether destroyed, stolen, discarded or erased some of the most significant artworks of the last 100 years have been lost and can no longer be seen.

With his junk objects, machine sculptures, but also his happenings and performances, the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely is regarded as one the most versatile and independent protagonists of the international art scene since the 1950s. Early on he artistically explored the phenomenon of movement. In collaboration with the Tinguely Museum, Basel, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, this show will be the first major exhibition of the work of Tinguely in approximately15 years. The show, which comprises more than 100 works, will span a wide range of works, starting with his first tenderly poetic wire sculptures and kinetic assemblages through to his world-famous Méta-matics.

The Museum Tinguely possesses the world's largest collection of Jean Tinguely's artistic work: paintings, drawings, sculptures, machines, installations, videos. In the past 16 years since the opening of the museum the collections has grown considerably and an update of the catalog was urgently needed. Now the new catalogue has been published, accompanied by an extensive exhibition of the Tinguely Collection, the first since many years.

With this retrospective exhibition entitled Tinguely@Tinguely the museum also takes the opportunity to present a revised view of his oeuvre. As the director of the museum, Roland Wetzel explains:
"We show all the Tinguely from 1954 to 1991, but we want to focus especially on the young Tinguely, the very innovative one that created new kinds of art, especially his self-destructing machines or his machines that made drawings, or his early reliefs that put abstract art through movement into a new state."

The Museum Tinguely is an art museum in Basel, Switzerland that contains a permanent exhibition of the works of Swiss painter and sculptor Jean Tinguely. Located in the Solitudepark by the Rhine, the museum was designed by the architect Mario Botta.
A variety of Tinguely's kinetic art sculptures are on permanent display, complemented with illustrations, photographs and other documents related to the artist's life and work. Tinguely's wife, Niki de Saint Phalle has donated 55 sculptures to the museum.
Jean Tinguely (22 May 1925 – 30 August 1991) was a Swiss sculptor best known for his kinetic art sculptural machines (known officially as metamechanics) that extended the Dada tradition into the later part of the 20th century. Tinguely's art satirized automation and the technological overproduction of material goods.
He was born in Fribourg, Tinguely grew up in Basel, but moved to France in 1952 with his first wife, Swiss artist Eva Aeppli, to pursue a career in art. He belonged to the Parisian avantgarde in the mid-twentieth century and was one of the artists who signed the New Realist's manifesto (Nouveau réalisme) in 1960.
His best-known work, a self-destroying sculpture titled Homage to New York (1960), only partially self-destructed at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, although his later work, Study for an End of the World No. 2 (1962), detonated successfully in front of an audience gathered in the desert outside Las Vegas.
Tinguely married fellow Swiss artist Eva Aeppli in 1951. In 1971, he married his second wife, Niki de Saint Phalle with whom he collaborated on several artistic projects, such as the Hon – en katedral or Le Cyclop.
Tinguely died at the age of 66 years in the Bern Hospital of heart failure.
