lecture 8: Jean Rhys, good morning, midnight and WH Auden "In Memory of WB Yeats"
Good Morning Midnight never directly mentions impending war or politics, but the disenfranchised main character Sasha Jansen, personalizes how a fascis temperament shows up in ordinary people one meets in everyday life. The degree of delight her employer 'Mr. Blank' takes in humiliating her--and forcing her to say he is right, is sadistic and done for his own self aggrandizement. The setting is 1937--the year of the Paris World Exposition--a last ditch attempt to build solidarity between and among European Nations. But the German Pavilion showcased war planes and the movie "Triumph of the Will," while, in the Spanish Pavilion Picasso premiered his painting 'Guernica' to depict the terror of Hitler bombing the small town in Spain to help out the dictator Franco.

Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (Summary & Analysis of the novel)
Wide Sargasso Sea is a 1966 novel by Dominica-born British author Jean Rhys. It is a feminist and anti-colonial response to Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre (1847), describing the background to Mr. Rochester's marriage from the point-of-view of his mad wife Antoinette Cosway, a Creole heiress.
Antoinette's story is told from the time of her youth in Jamaica, to her unhappy marriage to a certain unnamed English gentleman, who renames her Bertha, declares her mad, takes her to England, and isolates her away from the rest of the world in his mansion. Antoinette is caught in an oppressive patriarchal society in which she fully belongs neither to Europe nor to Jamaica. Wide Sargasso Sea explores the power of relationships between men and women and develops postcolonial themes, such as raci...

While the village of Llanfair has always been at odds with the neighboring town of Beddgelert, an intriguing archeological find in the nearby hills brings that rivalry to dangerous extremes and creates a circus of local enthusiasm and gossip. The circus quickly turns deadly, however, when Llanfair’s prodigal son, Ted Morgan, announces plans to erect an amusement park over the site’s excavation. Soon Constable Evans is drawn into a whirl of cultural pride, deception, and greed, and while he’s at it uncovers the town’s undaunted ambition—to earn the right to the longest name in the world.

I could not change them and probably nothing would. Reality might disconcert her, bewilder her, hurt her, but it would not be reality. It would be only a mistake, a misfortune, a wrong path taken, her fixed ideas would never change.
Nothing that I told her influenced her at all."
The second passage comes from the last pages of Part II, page 111 in my edition:
"I was tired of these people. I disliked their laughter and their tears, their flattery and envy, conceit and deceit. And I hated the place.
I hated the mountains and the hills, the rivers and the rain. I hated the sunsets of whatever colour, I hated its beauty and its magic and the secret I would never know. I hated its indifference and the cruelty which was part of its loveliness. About all I hated her. For she belonged to the magic and the loveliness. She had left me thirsty and all my life would be thirst and longing for what I had lost before I found it.
