Zelda Fitzgerald

Zelda Fitzgerald (née Sayre; July 24, 1900 – March 10, 1948) was an American socialite and novelist, and the wife of American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose work she strongly influenced.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, she was noted for her beauty and high spirits, and was dubbed by her husband as "the first American Flapper". She and Scott became the emblem of the Jazz Age, for which they are still celebrated. The immediate success of Scott's first novel This Side of Paradise (1920) brought them into contact with high society, but their marriage was plagued by wild drinking, infidelity and bitter recriminations. Ernest Hemingway, whom Zelda disliked, blamed her for Scott's declining literary output, though she has also been portrayed as the victim of an overbearing husband. After being diagnosed with schizophrenia (but possibly suffering from bipolar disorder), she was increasingly confined to specialist clinics, and the couple were living apart when Scott died suddenly in 1940. Zelda died later in a fire at her hospital in Asheville, North Carolina.

Curiously though, and when I think back, I had no strong mental image of either the writer or his wife. So I started to look at what photographs there were around and was stunned to find so much film footage of them existed! So I’ve gathered up what I could find: [1] Zelda as a young woman and walking about rather saucily and hip-swinging in a garden. [2] Zelda a little older and playing gaily about in a street. [3] The couple with daughter Frances and in a garden. [4] On the Riviera in 1924. [5] And in a cafe. [6] Finally, F Scott Fitzgerald working on 'The Great Gatsby'. Happily, my visual memory bank of the gilded couple is now full to overflowing! Enjoy!

Zelda Fitzgerald ou l'histoire d'une vie festive, folle et tragique, comme un roman, où se lisent la quête effrénée du bonheur, le désenchantement et la tragédie de l'existence. Zelda, la jeune fille du Sud, la fille de bonne famille, naît en 1900 à Montgomery en Alabama. Zelda, fille de l'austère juge Sayre, jeune fille délurée, rebelle, admirée et enviée, la tournoyante des bals de Montgomery qui scandalise par ses flirts et ses provocations la société bien pensante. En 1918, Zelda Sayre rencontre Scott Fitzgerald alors en garnison à Montgomery, jeune homme d'origine modeste en quête de gloire littéraire, épris de jeunes filles riches. Après des fiançailles mouvementées, Zelda épousera Scott en 1920 quand il connaîtra le succès avec son premier roman "L'envers du paradis". Gloire, argent, le jeune couple fait la une des journaux et ce sont les années folles, dont ils deviennent le couple mythique, années de plaisir, d'excès, de fêtes et d'alcool. Ils sont emblématiques de la génération perdue qui, au lendemain de la guerre de 14, fuit l’Amérique puritaine et la désillusion du rêve américain pour s'étourdir et échapper au réel dans les palaces et les fêtes déjantées de la Côte d'Azur. Zelda devient l'icône de la garçonne des années 20, éprise de liberté et d'indépendance. Scott et Zelda rêvent leur vie, se mettent en scène, se disputent l'intimité de leur couple comme matériau d'écriture, deviennent des personnages de romans sous la plume de Scott. Quand intervient la fêlure? Le couple se déchire, se distend, se jalouse. Car Zelda, à la recherche de sa propre identité artistique veut "s'exprimer" par l'écriture, mais c'est là le domaine et le talent de Scott, par la danse à laquelle elle va s'adonner avec fureur, par la peinture aussi. Zelda se consume dans une quête pathétique."Ma mère avait tous les talent mais pas assez de discipline" dira sa fille unique Scottie. Le destin de Zelda suit la trajectoire de l'époque. En 1929 le Krach de Wall Street fracasse l'insouciance des années 20. 1930 voit le premier internement de Zelda. Zelda l'incontrôlable ne maîtrise plus désormais son esprit. Diagnostiquée schizophrène, elle sombre dans l'envers du paradis, subit des traitements inhumains, refait surface, se bat avec lucidité, écrit en quelques mois, alors qu'elle est internée, son roman "Accordez-moi cette valse", sombre à nouveau jusqu'à cette nuit de 1948 où elle meurt brûlée vive dans l'incendie de l'hôpital psychiatrique d'Asheville. Une vie comme un roman qui, à travers ses délires et ses souffrances, dit la quête effrénée du bonheur, le désenchantement, la tragédie de l'existence et l'évanescence du monde. Zelda Fitzgerald ou l'histoire d'une vie festive, folle et tragique, comme un roman, où se lisent la quête effrénée du bonheur, le désenchantement et la tragédie de l'existence. Zelda, la jeune fille du Sud, la fille de bonne famille, naît en 1900 à Montgomery en Alabama. Zelda, fille de l'austère juge Sayre, jeune fille délurée, rebelle, admirée et enviée, la tournoyante des bals de Montgomery qui scandalise par ses flirts et ses provocations la société bien pensante. En 1918, Zelda Sayre rencontre Scott Fitzgerald alors en garnison à Montgomery, jeune homme d'origine modeste en quête de gloire littéraire, épris de jeunes filles riches. Après des fiançailles mouvementées, Zelda épousera Scott en 1920 quand il connaîtra le succès avec son premier roman "L'envers du paradis". Gloire, argent, le jeune couple fait la une des journaux et ce sont les années folles, dont ils deviennent le couple mythique, années de plaisir, d'excès, de fêtes et d'alcool. Ils sont emblématiques de la génération perdue qui, au lendemain de la guerre de 14, fuit l’Amérique puritaine et la désillusion du rêve américain pour s'étourdir et échapper au réel dans les palaces et les fêtes déjantées de la Côte d'Azur. Zelda devient l'icône de la garçonne des années 20, éprise de liberté et d'indépendance. Scott et Zelda rêvent leur vie, se mettent en scène, se disputent l'intimité de leur couple comme matériau d'écriture, deviennent des personnages de romans sous la plume de Scott. Quand intervient la fêlure? Le couple se déchire, se distend, se jalouse. Car Zelda, à la recherche de sa propre identité artistique veut "s'exprimer" par l'écriture, mais c'est là le domaine et le talent de Scott, par la danse à laquelle elle va s'adonner avec fureur, par la peinture aussi. Zelda se consume dans une quête pathétique."Ma mère avait tous les talent mais pas assez de discipline" dira sa fille unique Scottie. Le destin de Zelda suit la trajectoire de l'époque. En 1929 le Krach de Wall Street fracasse l'insouciance des années 20. 1930 voit le premier internement de Zelda. Zelda l'incontrôlable ne maîtrise plus désormais son esprit. Diagnostiquée schizophrène, elle sombre dans l'envers du paradis, subit des traitements inhumains, refait surface, se bat avec lucidité, écrit en quelques mois, alors qu'elle est internée, son roman "Accordez-moi cette valse", sombre à nouveau jusqu'à cette nuit de 1948 où elle meurt brûlée vive dans l'incendie de l'hôpital psychiatrique d'Asheville. Une vie comme un roman qui, à travers ses délires et ses souffrances, dit la quête effrénée du bonheur, le désenchantement, la tragédie de l'existence et l'évanescence du monde. Who didn't read F Scott Fitzgerald's 'A Diamond as Big as the Ritz' or 'The Great Gatsby' at university?! Not necessarily for any Eng. Lit. course but for the sheer Jazz Age excess expressed in the stories. And of course for the delicious writing - like creme brulee. Curiously though, and when I think back, I had no strong mental image of either the writer or his wife. So I started to look at what photographs there were around and was stunned to find so much film footage of them existed! So I’ve gathered up what I could find: [1] Zelda as a young woman and walking about rather saucily and hip-swinging in a garden. [2] Zelda a little older and playing gaily about in a street. [3] The couple with daughter Frances and in a garden. [4] On the Riviera in 1924. [5] And in a cafe. [6] Finally, F Scott Fitzgerald working on 'The Great Gatsby'. Happily, my visual memory bank of the gilded couple is now full to overflowing! Enjoy!

Zelda devient l'icône de la garçonne des années 20, éprise de liberté et d'indépendance. Scott et Zelda rêvent leur vie, se mettent en scène, se disputent l'intimité de leur couple comme matériau d'écriture, deviennent des personnages de romans sous la plume de Scott. Quand intervient la fêlure? Le couple se déchire, se distend, se jalouse. Car Zelda, à la recherche de sa propre identité artistique veut "s'exprimer" par l'écriture, mais c'est là le domaine et le talent de Scott, par la danse à laquelle elle va s'adonner avec fureur, par la peinture aussi. Zelda se consume dans une quête pathétique."Ma mère avait tous les talent mais pas assez de discipline" dira sa fille unique Scottie. Le destin de Zelda suit la trajectoire de l'époque. En 1929 le Krach de Wall Street fracasse l'insouciance des années 20. 1930 voit le premier internement de Zelda. Zelda l'incontrôlable ne maîtrise plus désormais son esprit. Diagnostiquée schizophrène, elle sombre dans l'envers du paradis, subit des traitements inhumains, refait surface, se bat avec lucidité, écrit en quelques mois, alors qu'elle est internée, son roman "Accordez-moi cette valse", sombre à nouveau jusqu'à cette nuit de 1948 où elle meurt brûlée vive dans l'incendie de l'hôpital psychiatrique d'Asheville. Une vie comme un roman qui, à travers ses délires et ses souffrances, dit la quête effrénée du bonheur, le désenchantement, la tragédie de l'existence et l'évanescence du monde. Zelda Fitzgerald

Zelda Fitzgerald (née Sayre; July 24, 1900 – March 10, 1948) was an American socialite and novelist, and the wife of American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose work she strongly influenced.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, she was noted for her beauty and high spirits, and was dubbed by her husband as "the first American Flapper". She and Scott became the emblem of the Jazz Age, for which they are still celebrated. The immediate success of Scott's first novel This Side of Paradise (1920) brought them into contact with high society, but their marriage was plagued by wild drinking, infidelity and bitter recriminations. Ernest Hemingway, whom Zelda disliked, blamed her for Scott's declining literary output, though she has also been portrayed as the victim of an overbearing husband. After being diagnosed with schizophrenia (but possibly suffering from bipolar disorder), she was increasingly confined to specialist clinics, and the couple were living apart when Scott died suddenly in 1940. Zelda died later in a fire at her hospital in Asheville, North Carolina.
