The Concentration Camp That Scared Even The Nazis: Jasenovac Concentration Camp
It's impossible to imagine, but take a second and think about this: during WWII, there was a camp in
the former Yugoslavia that a Holocaust survivor and historian called “worse than even Auschwitz” in
terms of brutality, and about which the Nazis pushed for the camp leadership to be changed due to its
very public and savage daily routine. It might surprise you, but the Germans did not run this
extermination camp, and it was the third-largest concentration camp in Europe during the war in terms
of area.
After World War 1, a new country was created from many of the territories of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire and the country of Serbia. This was Yugoslavia, “the land of the South Slavs.” Included within
the new nation were Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Montenegrins, North Macedonians, Albanians, a...

Holocaust in Croatia: Jasenovac (Rescuing the Evidence, p.1)
After Germany and its Axis allies invaded Yugoslavia in April 1941, the Nazis permitted the fascist and terrorist Ustasa organization to found the Independent State of Croatia. The Ustasa instituted a reign of terror and systematically killed Serbs, Jews, and Roma (Gypsies). Croatian fascists murdered or expelled hundreds of thousands of Serbs. In the countryside, Ustasa guards burned down entire Serbian villages and killed the inhabitants. Croatian fascists raped Serbian women and tortured Serbian men.
The Ustasa regime established numerous concentration camps in Croatia between 1941 and 1945. The largest was the Jasenovac complex.

The horror of the Jasenovac concentration camp
During WWII, between 77,000 and 104,000 people were murdered in the Jasenovac camp complex by the Croatian fascist regime. They were Serbs, Jews, Roma, and other non-Catholics. One prisoner described Jasenovac as "an unheard death camp." A prisoners' breakout on April 22nd, 1945 led to the camp's liquidation. #WeRemember

Exploziv Zona - Jasenovac
Godine prolaze. Ratovi takođe. Dolaze neke nove muke. I nekako se stare rane zaboravljaju. Sve je manje onih koji se mogu živo sećati Jasenovca. I tih meseci nakon ofanzive kada su kolone ljudi sa Kozare odvedene u bivšu ciglanu.Odlaskom i poslednjeg svedoka nikad do kraja ispričana priča o golgoti naroda sa Kozare, biće smeštena u nekoliko pasusa srednjoškolskih udžbenika. Žrtve, više od 80.000 ljudi sa Kozare, ipak zaslužuje mnogo više. Ovo je priča o njima...

very public and savage daily routine. It might surprise you, but the Germans did not run this

After World War 1, a new country was created from many of the territories of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire and the country of Serbia. This was Yugoslavia, “the land of the South Slavs.” Included within
the new nation were Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Montenegrins, North Macedonians, Albanians, and
Bosnian Muslims. There were also smaller numbers of other ethnic groups living within Yugoslavia,
including Jewish and Roma people.
At various times throughout the centuries, the different ethnic groups of the region had been at each
others' throats. This was especially true of the two largest groups, the Croats and the Serbs. One of the
many problems between the many groups in Yugoslavia was that for centuries, they had been
dominated and ruled by other nations, kingdoms, and people, most notably the Turks beginning in the
late 1400s and the Austro-Hungarians starting in the early 1700s when they began to slowly push the
Ottoman Turks out of the northern parts of the region.
As you may know, since the beginning of time, conquerors have used the “divide and conquer” policy
to keep their subject people weak and more focused on one another than on their common enemy. This
was the case with both the Turks and the Austro-Hungarians. Making matters even more interesting
was that many people in Bosnia converted to Islam throughout the centuries of Turkish rule.
Genetically, these people are mostly Serbs and Croats, but in the centuries since the Turks, they have
developed their own culture, and obviously, their religion differs from those around them.
From the 15th century to the 20th, foreign rulers pitted the various people of the lands of the former
Yugoslavia against each other to help maintain their own position.

Jasenovac: The Most HORRENDOUS Concentration Camp Of WW2
A little-known name with the darkest of history, Jasenovac stands as quite possibly the very worst concentration camp of WW2. Survivor accounts bear witness to some of the most horrendous acts of the entire war. Welcome to Bizarre History, today we uncover the horrors of Jasenovac – The most horrendous concentration camp of WW2
A regime destined for bloodshed
The administration running the independent state of Croatia at the time, was notoriously brutal and violent. Ustase has been remembered in the history books as fascist, racist, and a hyper-nationalist government not beneath committing acts of terrorism. The Ustase was led by Ante Pavelic whose views on violence and the necessity for an independent Croatia were made clear in a blood-chilling speech in 1932. Pavelic declared the bells that would announce the arrival of the independent state of Croatia were ‘the dagger, revolver, machine gun, and time bomb’. Unfortunately, Pavelic was a man of his word. Along with the backing of Mussolini and increasing numbers of militia within its ranks, the uprising Ustase soon planted bombs on continental trains heading for Yugoslavia. Despite its independence-based outlook, Ustase only came to power through violence and with the backing of fascist Axis powers. It never held a huge popular sway within the population, any it gained it soon lost – this was down to the barbaric measures it used to maintain control.

The Jasenovac Memorial Area Collection contains thousands of artifacts--ranging from a recipe book written by a starving Stara Gradiska camp inmate to shackles found at Jasenovac--and related materials from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's archives.
In this interview, Eileen Blankenbaker, object conservator at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, speaks about artifacts from Jasenovac in the museum's collection.

Godine prolaze. Ratovi takođe. Dolaze neke nove muke. I nekako se stare rane zaboravljaju. Sve je manje onih koji se mogu živo sećati Jasenovca.
