India's Most Chilling Historical Event: The Kashmir Exodus
For centuries, Kashmir was home to Muslims and Hindus alike. Despite religious differences, historic discrimination, and episodes of violence, members of both faiths shared a common land, language, and culture there. This common identity, known as Kashmiriyat, united Kashmir’s residents with a sense of community and loyalty.
In 1989, this unity was shattered with the outbreak of an insurgency that rages to this day. A wave of monstrous killings and brutal repression created the conditions for a massive exodus of nearly all of Kashmir’s Hindus.
Today on A Day In History, we’ll discover what led to this mass movement of people. We’ll see how the Kashmir Valley unravelled and descended into violence, how public lynchings and sexual violence become the norm, and why this exodus of over 100,...

But more than 70 years later, Kashmiris have yet to vote on their status. They remain stuck between two nuclear nations locked in a dangerous conflict with no end in sight.

A British Commission divided the territory into majority Muslim Pakistan and majority Hindu India. In the chaos that followed partition, 15 million people fled across the new borders and 500,000 died in rioting. Four border regions saw the worst of it: Sindh, Bengal, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Among India's 565 princely states only Jammu and Kashmir had a Hindu Maharajah ruling over a majority Muslim population. India claimed the Maharaja decided to join India. Pakistan disputed this.
In October Pashtuns from Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province invaded Kashmir with the support of Pakistan's government. In October of 1947 the Maharaja left Srinagar. Indian troops were airlifted in but were ill-prepared for the cold and altitude. Pakistan responded with its own campaign and India approached the United Nations to broker a ceasefire which went into effect on January 1st 1949, establishing a line of control but no final border.
In 1962 China attacked India in the Aksai Chin region of Kashmir easily defeating India's poorly equipped Himalayan troops. China retains control of the Aksai Chin today. Three years later encouraged by China's success Pakistan sent troops across the line of control dressed as Kashmiri locals - the fighting proved brief and inconclusive. On September 22nd both sides agreed to a un-backed ceasefire. Another brief war broke out over East Pakistan in 1971 - this one conclusive. East Pakistan seceded. Ten million refugees streamed into West Bengal and, with India's help, Bangladesh was born. In 1999 after both India and Pakistan had successfully tested nuclear weapons, full-scale war was barely avoided when Pakistan tried to seize the cargill region of indian-controlled Kashmir.
At one time an average of one Pakistani soldier every four days and one Indian soldier every other day died at the Siachen glacier and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 were reportedly planned by senior members of lashkar-e-taiba, which Pakistan created to fight Indian domination of Kashmir and which India accuses of terrorist atrocities all over India.
The conflict simmers in 2007, 777 people were killed in violence in Jammu and Kashmir bringing the two decade total above 47,000 by India's official count. According to some Kashmiris the total is twice that number.

We’ll see how the Kashmir Valley unravelled and descended into violence, how public lynchings and sexual violence become the norm, and why this exodus of over 100,000 people is so easily forgotten. If that sounds interesting to you, then remember to leave a like on this video and subscribe to our channel for more interesting historical topics.
Kashmir
When India and Pakistan gained independence in August 1947, the fate of the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir was undecided. Kashmir’s Muslim majority were inclined to Pakistan but the Hindu authorities leaned towards India. A Muslim rebellion broke out with assistance from Pakistan, prompting the Maharaja to ask for Indian intervention in exchange for joining India. The First Kashmir War set the tone for Indo-Pakistani relations and when it ended in January 1949, it left Kashmir divided between the two nations.
The majority of Kashmir remained Muslim under Indian rule, but within this new democratic structure they were able to wield power instead of the Hindu minority. Muslims dominated politics, economics, and society in post-1947 Kashmir while Hindus faced mounting discrimination. Hindus had their land taken and redistributed, were denied promotions and jobs, and had little in the way of political power. Meanwhile, Kashmir’s Muslims were partial towards Pakistan which led to tension with Indian authorities and security forces, who reacted harshly to any whispers of Kashmiri separatism and passed oppressive laws to counter it.
In time, Islamic militancy grew in the valley.. The Jamaat-e-Islami group worked its influence through schools, mosques, and political activism to encourage separatist and anti-India feeling in Kashmir. Meanwhile Pakistan was eager to support this - after all, India had helped Bangladesh break away in 1971 and it was eager to repay the favor by splitting off a piece of India. Pakistan began funding and arming militant groups in Kashmir and encouraging violence, most notably the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).

A concise summary of political and military events in the history of #Kashmir stretching back to 150 years, though largely focused on #KashmirsAccession to #India and the political events that followed. With this short video, one can truly get a grasp of events. History buffs will find enough intrigue to dig deeper and understand the minds of the men of the day. As always, there are various interpretations of events so do write in your counterpoints and enjoy the end limerick.
Correction:
The leader of the first battalion of Sikh Regiment that flew into Srinagar was led by Lt. Col. Dewan Ranjit Rai, not Ranjit Pai.
Pakistan's Independence is mentioned as August 14, 1946, it should be 1947.
Bisbo regrets the errors.

In a determined effort to restore the splendor of Kashmir's waterways, a coalition of women activists and administrative officers has turned their gaze towards revitalizing Jhelum river cruises.
With a vision to unveil the rich tapestry of Srinagar, often hailed as the Venice of the East, these impassioned advocates embarked on a poignant journey. Recently, a historic voyage set sail from GPO, charting a course to Khankah Moula in downtown Srinagar. This symbolic voyage not only navigates the river's currents but also aims to rekindle the cultural heartbeat of a city steeped in timeless allure.

The Kashmir Issue - ever since independence, has been a sensitive and debatable topic for both India and Pakistan. Despite the emotions surrounding the topic - very few know about the history and struggle of Kashmir.
What is Article 370 and Article 35A?
Why have all parties failed to resolve Kashmir - even after India and Pakistan fighting several wars over it - despite the United Nations intervening - in spite of SEVEN DECADES having passed??
In Part 1 of Episode 100 - #TheDeshBhakt; we make an attempt to untangle and explain the Kashmir conflict.
WARNING _ by no means this is a complete history of the state / just an attempt to explain a knotty issue / keeping facts in mind and going easy on the emotions.

Who Really OWNS Kashmir?🤔
Kashmir, one of the most strategic places in the world, where 3 powerful countries collide: India, Pakistan, and China. This region has been the epicenter of a brutal conflict over these disputed borders for decades. But, who really owns land?
You see, When the United India or British India divided in 1947, this is how it was. Some princely states were given the choice to join either country. But the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir ruled by a Hindu monarch remained neutral at first.
Later, fearing that the monarch would join India, Pakistan invaded the region. The monarch turned to India’s help in exchange to join India, which sparked the first indo-pakistan war.
Finally in 1949, the UN Security Council intervened and brokered a ceasefire line called the Line of Control.

Integration of Princely States | Hyderabad, Junagarh and Kashmir || रियासतों का एकीकरण | polity
In this video, I want to convey the message that At the time of independence, India comprised two categories of political units, namely, the British provinces (under the direct rule of the British government) and the princely states (under the rule of native princes but subject to the paramountcy of the British Crown).
The Indian Independence Act (1947) created two independent and separate dominions of India and Pakistan and gave three options to the princely states viz., joining India, joining Pakistan, or remaining independent. Of the 552 princely states situated within the geographical boundaries of India, 549 joined India and the remaining 3 (Hyderabad, Junagarh, and Kashmir) refused to join India. However, in course of time, they were also integrated with India–Hyd...

Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) was historically part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is now an important component of India as a result of the decision to sign the Instrument of Accession. Still, it was illegally occupied by Pakistan in 1947.
Azad (“Free”) Kashmir, established in 1947 after the partition of India, is neither a province nor an agency of Pakistan but has a government of its own that is regarded by Pakistan as “independent,” even though it is protected by and economically and administratively linked to Pakistan.17
By executing an Instrument of Accession under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947,...

However, in course of time, they were also integrated with India–Hyderabad by means of police action, Junagarh by means of a referendum, and Kashmir by the Instrument of Accession.

By executing an Instrument of Accession under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh agreed to accede his state to the Dominion of India. On 27 October 1947, the then Governor-General of India, Lord Mountbatten accepted the accession.
The last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir was Maharaja Hari Singh, who ascended the throne in 1925. He made primary education compulsory in the State, introduced laws prohibiting child marriage and allowed low castes to go to places of worship.
Sheikh Abdullah was introduced to Jawaharlal Nehru in 1937 and as he too was a leader of the Indian National Congress was demanding similar rights for people of British India and had formed The All India States Peoples Conference for supporting the people of Princely States in their struggle for a representative ...

SUMMARY
=======
Jammu and Kashmir was, from 1846 until 1952, a princely state of the British Empire in India and ruled by a Jamwal Rajput Dogra Dynasty. The state was created in 1846 from the territories previously under Sikh Empire after the First Anglo-Sikh War. The East India Company annexed the Kashmir Valley, Jammu, Ladakh, and Gilgit-Baltistan from the Sikhs, and then transferred it to Raja Gulab Singh of Jammu in return for an indemnity payment of 7,500,000 Nanakshahee Rupees.
At the time of the British withdrawal from India, Maharaja Hari Singh, the ruler of the state, preferred to become independent and remain neutral between the successor dominions of India and Pakistan. However, an uprising in the western districts of the State followed by an attack by raiders from the neighbouring Northwest Frontier Province, supported by Pakistan, put an end to his plans for independence. On 26 October 1947, the Maharaja signed the Instrument of Accession joining the Dominion of India in return for military aid. The western and northern districts presently known as Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan passed to the control of Pakistan, while the remaining territory became the Indian state Jammu and Kashmir.
