The Siachen Glacier and Trans-Karakoram Track Explained | Siachen Glacier #indianarmy #borderdispute
The Siachen Glacier and the Trans-Karakoram Track are both located in the region of Jammu and Kashmir, which is a disputed territory between India and Pakistan.
1. Siachen Glacier:
The Siachen Glacier is a glacier located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalayas. It is known as the world's highest battlefield due to the military conflict between India and Pakistan over the control of the glacier. The area is highly inhospitable, with extreme weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, high winds, and heavy snowfall.
The dispute over the Siachen Glacier began in 1984 when Indian troops occupied the region, fearing a potential threat from Pakistan. Since then, both countries have maintained a military presence in the area. The conflict has resulted in numerous casualties du...

The new Silk Road - Karakoram Highway Pakistan || Riding from Sydney to London - EP 17
We venture further into Northern Pakistan along the Karakoram Highway. This road is made for motorcycle adventure!
Starting off at Phander we follow the Gilgit river towards Gilgit until James unfortunately gets another flat tyre. A quick fix sees us off to Naltar Valley in some rather wet and cold conditions, but it was definitely worth it. Passing livestock and traversing snowed out roadways and eventually having to ride along a riverbed, it was an adventure we weren't expecting at all, but turned out to be a highlight of the trip.
Northern Pakistan is without one of the most beautiful places that we have ever been fortunate enough to visit. One look over the Hunza Valley will leave you speechless. It feels like every corner you take there is another beautiful view.
From Hunza...

SUMMARY
=======
The Trans-Karakoram Tract (Chinese: 喀喇昆仑走廊; pinyin: Kālǎkūnlún zǒuláng, Hindi: शक्सगाम, Urdu: شکسگام); also known as Shaksgam or the Shaksgam Tract, is an area of more than 2,700 sq mi (6,993 km2) north of the Karakoram, including the Shaksgam valley and Raskam (Yarkand river valley). The tract is administered by the People's Republic of China as a part of Kargilik County and Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in the Kashgar Prefecture of Xinjiang Autonomous Region, but it was regarded by Pakistan as part of Kashmir until 1963. It is claimed by India as part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Most of the tract is composed of the Shaksgam Valley and was formerly administered as part of Shigar, a district (formerly a tehsil) in the Baltistan region. A polo ground in Shaksgam was built by the Amacha Royal family of Shigar, and the Rajas of Shigar used to invite the Amirs of Hotan to play polo there. Most of the names of the mountains, lakes, rivers and passes are in Balti/Ladakhi, suggesting that this land had been part of Baltistan/Ladakh region for a long time. The Raja of Shigar controlled most of this land until 1971, when Pakistan abolished the Raja government system. The tract is one of the most inhospitable areas of the world, with some of the highest mountains. Bounded by the Kun Lun Mountains in the north, and the Karakoram peaks to the south, including Broad Peak, K2 and Gasherbrum, on the southeast it is adjacent to the highest battlefield in the world on the Siachen Glacier region which is controlled by India.

The conflict has resulted in numerous casualties due to the harsh conditions and avalanches. Efforts to demilitarize the glacier and convert it into a peace park have been discussed but have not been implemented.
2. Trans-Karakoram Track:
The Trans-Karakoram Track is a historic trade route that connects Gilgit-Baltistan region in Pakistan with Xinjiang region in China. It is an ancient route that has been used for centuries for trade and cultural exchange between the people of the region. The track passes through the Karakoram mountain range, which is one of the highest mountain ranges in the world.
The Trans-Karakoram Track is significant due to its strategic and economic importance. It serves as a major trade route for goods between Pakistan and China, and it is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, which aims to enhance connectivity and economic cooperation between the two countries.
The route is also a popular destination for adventure tourism, attracting trekkers and mountaineers from around the world. It offers breathtaking landscapes, including snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and high-altitude lakes.
It's important to note that both the Siachen Glacier and the Trans-Karakoram Track are located in a politically sensitive region. The territorial dispute between India and Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir remains unresolved, and the situation in the area can be complex and subject to change.

From Hunza we head towards Passu and get some good photos of the Passu Cones before setting off on a rather challenging trek to the Passu Glacier and then James crapping himself at the height of the Passu Suspension Bridge.
All of this happens in a matter of days. A jam-packed overland motorcycle adventure on our Suzuki DR650 Steads.
Enjoy
