The Church of Scotland (Scots:The Scots Kirk, Scottish Gaelic:Eaglais na h-Alba), known informally by its Scots language name, the Kirk, is the established church of Scotland.Protestant and Presbyterian, its longstanding decision to respect "liberty of opinion on matters not affecting the substance of the faith" means it is relatively tolerant of a variety of theological positions, including those who would term themselves conservative and liberal in their doctrine, ethics and interpretation of Scripture. It is legally the national church.
The Church of Scotland traces its roots back to the beginnings of Christianity in Scotland, but its identity is principally shaped by the Reformation of 1560. As of December 2013, its pledged membership is 398,389, or about 7.5% of the total population – though according to the 2011 national census, a significantly higher 32% of the Scottish population claimed some form of allegiance to it (see Religion in Scotland).
James "Athenian" Stuart (1713 – 2 February 1788) was an Scottish archaeologist, architect and artist, best known for his central role in pioneering Neoclassicism.
Life
Early life
Stuart was born in 1713 in Creed Lane, Ludgate Street, London, to a Scottish sailor who died when he was young. Proving a talented artist while his family was in poverty, he was apprenticed to a fan painter to support the family financially. However, in around 1742, he was able to travel to Italy (albeit on foot) for his artistic improvement, working there as a cicerone and a painter, learning Latin, Italian and Greek, and studying Italian and Roman art and architecture. There he produced his first major work, his illustrated treatise on the Egyptian obelisk of Psammetichus II within A. M. Bandini's De obelisco Caesaris Augusti, and met Nicholas Revett, a young East Anglian nobleman and amateur architect on his Grand Tour.
Naples and Greece
In 1748 Stuart joined Revett, Gavin Hamilton and the architect Matthew Brettingham the younger on a trip to Naples to study the ancient ruins and, from there, they travelled through the Balkans (stopping at Pula) to Greece. Visiting Salonica, Athens, and an Ionic temple on the River Ilissus among others, they made accurate measurements and drawings of the ancient ruins.
James Stuart (1802–26 May 1842) was an Irish official and naturalist in Australia. He was one of the first Quarantine Officers at Sydney's North Head Quarantine Station. William Sharp Macleay named which the brown antechinus (Antechinus stuartii) after him in 1841.
Life
Born in Ireland c. 1802, Stuart arrived in Australia in June 1834 and wrote to his sister, Margaret "by the ship Jessie from Liverpool, which place we left in December 1833 and after encountering very stormy weather we were obliged to put into Falmouth. We left the latter place in February and after a fine passage we put into Talbot Bay at the beautiful Town of the Cape of Good Hope. From this we sailed to Hobart Town and thence to Sydney, nothing remarkable occurring on the passage except that we were sometimes in danger from the drunkenness and consequent incapacity of our Captain."
He was a keen naturalist and artist and illustrated many species of bird, insect and fish during his era in Sydney and also during a period on Norfolk Island. Some 200 of his paintings are held by the New South Wales state Archives and by the Mitchell Library.
Edinburgh, the country's capital and second-largest city, was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 18.7square miles (48.3km²), of which, 18.6square miles (48.2km²) of it is land and 0.1square miles (0.1km²) of it (0.27%) is water. It was incorporated in 1857.
History
In 1700 Isaac Magoon purchased 1,950 acres (7.9km2) of land from then Windham and thus began Scotland’s History. He named the town Scotland as a way of commemorating his ancestral home. Scotland was incorporated in May 1857.
Government
The town still maintains the town meeting as its form of government with a board of selectmen. The town also has eight boards & commissions, including Inlands & Wetlands, Planning & Zoning and Board of Education.
Attractions
Scotland is home to the D'Elia Antique Tool Museum. The museum was built in 2005 and is housed in the same building as the Scotland Public Library. It is the home of over 1200 antique woodworking planes dating back to the mid-18th century. Another attraction is the Samuel Huntington house which located on Huntington Rd or Route 14

'Why did you choose to join the Free Church?'
SNP leadership candidate Kate Forbes has told Sky News that she decided to join the Free Church of Scotland because 'it was just down the road' and she was 'always keen to support the church on my doorstep'.
In an earlier interview with Sky News, Ms Forbes said having children outside of marriage would be "wrong" for her personally according to her faith and would be something she would "seek to avoid".

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.
