Quirky & Unusual Places to Stay in North Norfolk - Triumphal Arch & Holkham Hall: are they haunted?!
The Triumphal Arch is set on a 25,000 hectare estate designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the North Norfolk coastline. The Arch is Grade One listed and was completed in 1760 by builder Matthew Brettingham to a design attributed to William Kent. In the past, status was somewhat determined by the length of one’s drive and the arch was originally built to extend the hall’s South Drive helping elevate it’s standing. For much of the 18th and 19th centuries carriages regularly rumbled underneath it before the coastal road from Fakenham to Wells was improved. During the 19th and 20th centuries the arch was inhabited by farm labourers and shepherds before more recently being transformed into a quirky holiday let. Interestingly there is a debate of ghostly goings on recorded in th...

The Triumphal Arch is set on a 25,000 hectare estate designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the North Norfolk coastline. During the 19th and 20th centuries the arch was inhabited by farm labourers and shepherds before more recently being transformed into a quirky holiday let. Interestingly there is a debate of ghostly goings on recorded in the visitor book from previous guests who have stayed here. Holkham Hall is the jewel in the estates crown and was built in 1734. It has a fascinating history. Lady Glenconner, Princess Margaret’s lady in waiting, who grew up at Holkham Hall, has just written a book called “A Haunting at Holkham”. She believes the ghost of Lady Mary Campbell still visits the hall. Lady Mary Campbell, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, was just 19 when in 1747 she was told she would be married to Edward, Viscount Coke of Holkham. She had no wish to marry the Norfolk nobleman, who allegedly was fond of gambling, cockfighting and womanising. When she shunned him on their wedding night and refused to consummate their marriage, he locked her in her room at the hall. Because Lady Mary spent a year of her life unhappy and locked up it is believed she still makes her presence known here. Lady Glenconner’s sister used to see her at night dressed in old-fashioned clothes. Lady Mary's bedroom was exorcised but her presence stubbornly remains and poltergeist activity is still said to be commonplace.

Kedleston Hall is an English country house in Kedleston, Derbyshire, approximately four miles north-west of Derby.
The Curzon family have owned the estate at Kedleston since at least 1297 and have lived in a succession of manor houses near to or on the site of the present Kedleston Hall. The present house was commissioned by Sir Nathaniel Curzon (later 1st Baron Scarsdale) in 1759. The house was designed by the Palladian architects James Paine and Matthew Brettingham and was loosely based on an original plan by Andrea Palladio for the never-built Villa Mocenigo. At the time a relatively unknown architect, Robert Adam was designing some garden temples to enhance the landscape of the park; Curzon was so impressed with Adam's designs, that Adam was quickly put in charge of the construction of the new mansion.
-------------------------------
I have tried to re-create it as best I can however it has taken some time because of it being such a big project. I have been fighting with myself to not give up and finish it as best I could. I managed to finish it and 90% of the house is furnished however some rooms (The basement) and a few bedrooms are not furnished... But that leaves you room to put in your own bedrooms and not disturb the already furnished rooms.
The house was requested by LeavingOnAJetPlane (Check her page out!) and I hope it lives up to her expectations.
